Overview

The HSM FA 490.1 is a robust paper shredder designed for the efficient destruction of various sensitive materials, ensuring data security and compliance. Its primary function is to reduce paper, cardboard, store cards, credit cards, CD-ROMs, and floppy discs into unreadable particles. The machine's sturdy drive mechanism is engineered to handle common office items like paper clips and staples without damage, enhancing its durability and ease of use in a busy office environment.

Function Description

The HSM FA 490.1 operates through a sophisticated system that includes an intake conveyor, a cutting block, and a collection mechanism. When material is placed on the loading tray, the intake conveyor feeds it into the cutting block. The cutting block, equipped with specialized blades, then shreds the material according to the selected cut type (strip cut or cross cut). The shredded material is deposited into a dust tray, which can be easily emptied.

For safety, the shredder incorporates several interlocking devices. An emergency stop button immediately halts all operations, including the cutting block and feed belt, in case of danger. A main switch (on solo versions) allows for complete power disconnection and can be secured with a padlock to prevent unauthorized restarts. Safety flaps on the feed belt and inspection doors, as well as a safety switch on the dust tray, ensure that the machine only operates when all components are correctly positioned and secured. If any safety device is triggered, the shredder immediately switches off, and a "Safety circuit interrupted" LED illuminates, prompting the user to check the machine's status.

The shredder also features an intelligent control system that monitors for paper jams and motor overloads. In the event of a paper jam, the cutting block automatically reverses for a few seconds to clear the obstruction, indicated by a blinking red LED. If the motor overheats due to prolonged heavy use, the shredder automatically switches off, and a red LED lights up, requiring a cool-down period before restarting.

Usage Features

Operating the HSM FA 490.1 is straightforward, guided by a user-friendly keypad. The keypad includes a "Ready for operation" green LED, a start button, a stop button, and a reverse button. To begin shredding, users unlock the emergency stop button (if locked), turn the main switch to the "I" position (for solo versions or the baling press for combination versions), and then press the green start button. This activates the cutting block and the feed belt, which moves in the intake direction.

Materials are placed on the loading tray and then fed onto the intake conveyor in batches. The machine's design ensures a smooth and continuous shredding process. If material is accidentally placed on the belt that should not be shredded, the stop button can be pressed to halt the drive, allowing the material to be removed. The reverse button is particularly useful for clearing minor jams or retrieving mistakenly fed items, as it causes the cutting block and feed belt to run in reverse.

The shredder is designed for placement in dry rooms on a hard, level floor. Its robust construction and braking swivel castors allow for easy positioning and stability. For installations in confined spaces, the loading tray can be fitted after the machine is in its final location, reducing the machine's width for easier maneuvering through narrow doorways.

Maintenance Features

Regular maintenance is crucial for the longevity and optimal performance of the HSM FA 490.1. The manual outlines several key maintenance tasks:

  • Cleaning the cutting block: For strip cut machines, this involves squirting special cutting apparatus oil through the paper feed opening onto the blade rollers daily. The machine is then run forwards and backwards several times without paper to loosen dust and particles. Cross cut machines require pushing the oiler lever down several times when the cutting quality deteriorates or the machine becomes noisy, ensuring the oil level is between MIN and MAX markings.
  • Emptying the dust tray: Paper dust and particles accumulate in the integrated dust tray, which should be emptied weekly. The shredder will not operate if the dust tray is not fully pushed in, serving as a safety interlock.
  • Checking the chain tension: This should be done weekly for the first month and then monthly. The manual provides specific measurements for the sagging of the short and long chains and instructions on how to adjust the motor base and tension screws to achieve the correct tension. Over-tightening is cautioned against, as it can cause premature wear.
  • Greasing the drive chains and cogs: This is a bi-annual task that involves removing the side covers, greasing the cogs and drive chains with recommended lubricating grease, and then reinstalling the covers.
  • Maintenance work on the inlet conveyor belt: This includes checking the stripping device monthly. Users are instructed to lift the safety flap to access the stripping device and ensure it is flush with the conveyor belt. If not, it needs to be readjusted by loosening and retightening countersunk screws. Worn stripping bars should be replaced, and the area underneath cleaned.
  • Tightening the feed belt: If the feed belt slips under load, it needs to be tightened. This involves loosening hexagon nuts and lock nuts, then evenly tightening the feed belt using tensioning bolts. After tightening, the feed belt's straightness must be checked by running the shredder for 10 minutes to ensure it runs in the middle of the snub roller.
  • Checking the feed belt for wear: The feed belt's surface should be inspected for wear, and if the fabric inlay becomes visible, the belt must be replaced by customer service.
  • General cleaning: The shredder should be cleaned by switching it off, disconnecting the power plug, and using a soft cloth with a mild soap-water solution. Abrasive cleaners, cleaning fluid, petroleum, or thinners should be avoided.
  • Cleaning the tensioning station and conveyor-belt area: Monthly cleaning involves removing the feeding table and front panel of the tensioning station to remove dirt, and blowing out the conveyor-belt area with compressed air or a vacuum cleaner after removing the side covers.
  • Checking the stripping brush: Monthly inspection of the stripping brush below the conveyor belt is required. If it's not flush with the belt, it needs to be readjusted by loosening and re-screwing the brush supports.

These maintenance procedures, combined with the machine's robust design and safety features, ensure reliable and secure document destruction for extended periods.
