Overview

The GAI-Tronics Model 234 Stanchion Assembly is a robust and aesthetically pleasing emergency communication station designed for isolated, high-risk areas. This comprehensive unit integrates an emergency telephone and a beacon, standing over 9 feet tall to ensure high visibility and easy location by potential users. The station is shipped in two stages: first, the Model 84504 Hardware Kit, followed by the Model 84501, 84502, and 84503 assemblies.

Function Description

The primary function of the Model 234 Stanchion Assembly is to provide immediate emergency communication and visual signaling. When the clearly labeled emergency push button on the telephone is pressed, it initiates a connection to a user-programmed central security telephone number. Simultaneously, the integrated beacon activates, providing both a constant-on lamp and a flashing strobe light to draw attention to the emergency location. For nighttime visibility, a light mounted within the stanchion illuminates the front panel of the telephone.

The stanchion assembly is designed to house either a Model 298 or 297 Emergency Telephone and a Model 530FB or 531A Beacon. The specific models supported are:

  • Model 530FB Strobe with Dual Constant-On Lamps (Pub. 42004-284)
  • Model 297-001 Flush-Mount Emergency Phone (Pub. 42004-352)
  • Model 297-003 S.M.A.R.T. Flush-Mount Emergency Phone (Pub. 42004-351)
  • Model 298-001 Flush-Mount Emergency Phone with Keypad (Pub. 42004-352)

  • Designed for installation in accordance with national and local electrical codes, including proper grounding.

Maintenance Features

Installation Guidelines:

  • Detailed instructions are provided for constructing the concrete pier, including reinforcement cage specifications and conduit installation for telephone and electrical power wires. Conduits must be kept separate to prevent audio interference.
  • Anchor bolt positioning is critical and can be achieved using a provided template or specified dimensions.
  • The stanchion should only be mounted after the concrete has cured for a minimum of 24 hours.
  • Installation of the stanchion panel light involves securing the light assembly, extending wires to the base, inserting the compact fluorescent bulb, and securing the bezel and lens.
  • Beacon installation involves threading wires through the stanchion's nipple, screwing the beacon onto the nipple, and securing the lens cover with tamper-resistant screws.
  • Telephone installation requires separating the back box from the front panel, mounting the back box, installing a telephone line surge suppressor (sold separately), and connecting all necessary wires.

Wiring Connections:

  • All wiring connections, including those for the stanchion panel light and beacon, must comply with the National Electrical Code (NEC) or Canadian Electrical Codes (CEC).
  • Instructions detail connecting the telephone line to a surge suppressor, installing a ground wire, and connecting incoming AC or DC power lines to the surge protection and beacon.
  • The orange and violet strobe unit control wires are connected to the telephone PCBA.

Surface Damage Repair (Powder Coated Stanchions):

  • Scratch Repair: Involves sanding the damaged area, cleaning with a solvent (e.g., DuPont "PrepSol" or denatured alcohol), treating the bare metal with phosphoric acid solution, and painting with an automotive enamel or oil-base polyurethane enamel (e.g., Red Devil or Rustoleum). Krylon-type paints should not be used. Blending the repair enamel into the powder coat at the edges is recommended, though exact color matches may not be attainable.
  • Decal Repair: Instructions include using a sharp instrument (e.g., X-Acto knife) to loosen and remove damaged decals, cleaning the area with denatured alcohol, dampening the target area with a fine mist of water before applying a new decal, and carefully aligning and pressing the replacement decal to remove water and bubbles.
