4. Use t he m ain ha lya rd t o chec k t ha t the
ma st is c entere d from side to side . Pull
it t ight a nd m a rk t he ha lyard ne xt to t he
ve rt ic a ls c ha inpla t e . N ow do t he sa m e
to t he other side to see if the m arks line
up. If not , t ight e n a nd/or loosen t he
ve rt ic a ls until the m arks line up. Onc e
the m asthea d is c entere d, begin
tighte ning t he ve rt ica ls unt il t he
turnbuc k les a re approxima t e ly ha lf
closed. While tighte ning t he ve rtica ls
you m a y not ic e t he be nd in t he ma st
increa sing. N ow you ca n t ighte n the
low e rs w hic h w ill t e nd to stra ighte n the
low e r pa rt of the m ast. Be sure to
tighte n port a nd st arboa rd sides e ve nly.
5. Now you should t ight e n t he hea dstay
until it is a pproxima t ely ha lf c losed a s
w ell. This should induc e t he a ppropria te
am ount of hea dsta y t ension. N e ve r
use
anyt hing more t ha n a pa ir of w renches
to t ight en your rigging. I f you use a n
ex t e nde d pie c e of pipe on t he ha ndle of
a w re nc h you c a n ove r t ight e n t he
rigging a nd do da ma ge t o t he m ast or
rigging.
6. On t he Hunt e r 3 8 6 it is ne ce ssary t o go
up t he mast in a bosun’s c hair to t ight e n
the number 2 dia gonal shroud (D2 or
inte rm e dia t e shroud). Alw a ys use
ca ut ion w he n “going a loft ”. Y ou should
alw a ys use a mount a in c limbing harne ss
or Bosun’s Chair inte nded for t his use.
Alw ays tie int o t he harne ss w ith t he
ha lyard using a bow line a nd then se c ure
the shac k le a s a ba ck up a s t he k not is
more relia ble t ha n a m e chanic al
fa st e ner. T he person hoist ing you aloft
should ke ep t he halya rd st oppe r c lose d
to pre ve nt fa lls. Good comm unic a t ion
be tw e e n t he t w o of you is a lso
im port ant. Tighte n the D2 unt il it ha s
just bec om e tight and then a dd tw o
comple t e turns. While a t the first
spre ader, look up t he ba c k of the mast
to see if it is st ra ight (ra ther t ha n be nt
from side t o side ) I f it is not st ra ight ,
then a djust the appropria te D2 t o
st ra ight e n it.
7. Ha ve the pe rson on de ck c a re fully low e r
you. T he y should ke e p t he halya rd
w ra ppe d at le ast t w ic e around the w inc h
and should a lw a ys have one ha nd able t o
st op t he ha lya rd from running free . Onc e
on de ck look up t he ba c k of the mast
and se e if it is straight (ra t he r t ha n be nt
