Overview

This document is an operator manual for a Husqvarna Zero Turn Rider, model Z254 / 97046760100. It provides comprehensive information on the machine's function, technical specifications, usage, and maintenance.

Function Description:

The Husqvarna Zero Turn Rider is a ride-on mower primarily designed for rapidly mowing large areas of grass on lawns and even ground, free from obstacles like stones or tree stumps. Its key features include an easily accessible control panel and a hydrostatic transmission regulated by steering controls, which contribute to its performance. The machine can also be used for other tasks when equipped with manufacturer-supplied special accessories. The engine is a four-stroke overhead valve type, and power is transmitted via belt-driven hydraulic pumps. The left and right steering controls regulate the flow to these pumps, thereby controlling the direction and speed of the machine. Zero-turn capability allows for highly maneuverable operation.

Important Technical Specifications:

Engine:

  • Manufacturer: Kohler
  • Type: PS-KT745-3043
  • Power: 26 hp (The power rating is the average gross power output at the specified RPM of a typical production engine, measured using SAE Standards for gross power. Refer to the engine manufacturer's specifications for details.)
  • Spark Plug: Champion XC12YC, Gap: .030" (0,76 mm)
  • Lubrication: Pressure with oil filter
  • Fuel: Minimum 87 octane unleaded gasoline (maximum ethanol 10%, maximum MTBE 15%). E85 alcohol-based fuel is not allowed.
  • Fuel Tank Capacity: 3-1/2 gallons (13,25 litres)
  • Cooling: Air cooled
  • Air Filter: Standard
  • Alternator: 12v 15 amp at 3600 rpm
  • Starter: Electric

Transmission:

  • Transmission Type: Hydrostatic transaxles
  • Steering Control: Dual levers, foam gripped
  • Speed Forward: 0-6.5 mph (0-10,5 km/h)
  • Speed Reverse: 0-3.5 mph (0-5,6 km/h)
  • Brakes: Integrated Mechanical Park Brake

Frame:

  • Front Caster Tires: 11 x 6-5
  • Rear Tires, Turf Pneumatic: 18 x 9.5-8
  • Tire Pressure: 15 PSI / 103 kPa / 1 bar

Cutting Deck:

  • Cutting Width: 54" (137 cm)

Dimensions:

  • Weight: 640 lbs (290 kg)
  • Base Machine Length: 75" (191 cm)
  • Base Machine Height: 40" (102 cm)
  • Base Machine Width: 43-3/4" (112 cm)
  • Overall Width, Chute Up: 57" (145 cm)
  • Overall Width, Chute Down: 67-1/2" (171 cm)

Usage Features:

  • Steering Control Levers: Continuously variable speed and direction. Moving both levers forward or backward in equal measure results in straight-line movement. Turning is achieved by reducing the rotation of one wheel (e.g., pulling the right control towards neutral for a right turn). Zero-turn is possible by moving one control backward and the other forward.
  • Park Brake: Integrated with steering control levers. Engaged by moving both levers out from the neutral position. Releasing requires pulling both levers inwards to neutral simultaneously.
  • Throttle Control: Regulates engine speed and blade rotation rate. Full throttle is recommended for best mowing performance and battery charging.
  • Ignition Switch: Used to start and stop the engine.
  • Service Meter: Displays total engine hours and indicates when servicing is due (oil can icon every 50 hours). Manual reset involves turning the key off and on five times at one-second intervals.
  • Blade Switch: Pull out to engage mower deck blades, press down to disengage.
  • Choke Control: Used for cold starts to provide a richer fuel mixture. Pull up for cold starts.
  • Cutting Height Lever: Pull inwards and move to the desired height notch. The deck should always be raised to the highest position for transport.
  • Seat Adjustment Lever: Allows for lengthwise adjustment of the seat by pulling up a lever under the right side of the seat.
  • Fuel Shut Off Valve: Located at the right rear of the seat; off when the handle tab is perpendicular to the fuel line.
  • Tracking Adjustment: If the mower isn't tracking straight, adjustments can be made using tracking bolts that limit motion control levers.
  • Bypass Linkages: Must be engaged when pushing or pulling the mower manually. Located at the rear of the unit below the engine guard.
  • Safety System: Prevents starting or driving if the mower deck is engaged, or if steering/park brake controls are not in the outer, locked neutral position. The engine will shut off if the operator leaves the seat without engaging the park brake.
  • Slope Operation: Mow up and down slopes (maximum 10 degrees), not across. Avoid stopping, starting, or turning on slopes. Use low ground speed and move slowly and gradually.

Maintenance Features:

  • Maintenance Schedule: A detailed schedule is provided for daily, 25-hour, 50-hour, 100-hour, 300-hour, and annual checks, changes, and services.
  • Battery: Recharge if too weak to start the engine. Instructions for jumper cable use, cleaning terminals, and replacement are provided. Always connect the RED cable to the positive (+) terminal first and the BLACK cable to the negative (-) terminal last to prevent sparks.
  • Park Brake Adjustment: Tension can be adjusted by tightening a 1/2" pivot nut.
  • Tire Pressures: All tires must be at 15 psi / 103 kPa / 1 bar for even cutting height.
  • Caster Wheels: Check every 200 hours for free movement.
  • V-belts: Check every 100 hours for cracking and nicks. Replace if slipping due to wear.
  • Mower Deck Adjustment (Leveling): Adjust on a level surface with correctly inflated tires. The deck should be slightly higher in the rear.
  • Cutting Blades: Sharpen or replace as needed. Blades are sharp; use gloves. Torque blade bolts to 45-60 ft/lbs (60-81 Nm).
  • Anti-scalp Rollers: Adjust to be slightly off the ground (approx. 1/4") at the desired cutting height to prevent scalping.
  • Cleaning: Regular cleaning, especially under the mower deck, is recommended after each use. Use compressed air for the top surface and normal water pressure for the underside. Avoid high-pressure washers, steam cleaners, and spraying engine/electrical components.
  • Engine Oil Change: Change when the engine is warm. Refer to the engine owner's manual for specific recommendations.
  • Lubrication: Use high-grade molybdenum disulphide grease for zerks and engine oil for other points. Lubricate twice weekly for daily use. Avoid getting lubricant on belts or pulley drive surfaces.
  • Transmission: Maintenance-free; no level checks or oil changes required. Contact a dealer if leaks occur.
  • Winter Storage: Prepare the machine for storage if not used for 30 days or more. This includes cleaning, inspecting for worn parts, changing engine oil, emptying fuel tanks or adding stabilizer, removing the spark plug and adding engine oil to the cylinder, lubricating, removing and charging the battery, and storing in a clean, dry area.
  • Service Journal: The manual includes a service journal to document all service and repair work, which helps reduce costs and maintain resale value.
