Overview

This document is an Operator's Manual for the Hustler® FasTrak® 48/54/60 series of zero-turn mowers, manufactured by Excel Industries, Inc. The manual provides comprehensive information on safe operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting to ensure years of dependable service.

Function Description:

The Hustler® FasTrak® is a zero-turn riding mower designed for efficient and precise lawn maintenance. It features a SmoothTrak™ steering system, allowing for highly maneuverable operation, including zero-radius turns. The mower is capable of operating on moderately steep slopes, up to 15 degrees, with specific precautions outlined for safe use on inclines. It is equipped with a mower deck that can be engaged and disengaged, and its cutting height is adjustable. The machine is powered by an internal combustion engine, with options for Kawasaki or Kohler EFI engines, and utilizes a hydrostatic transmission system for drive.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Engine Options: Kawasaki or Kohler EFI engines.
  • Electrical System: 12-volt, negative ground.
  • Battery: Garden tractor BCI group U1R with a 225 or better cranking AMP rating. A maintenance-free battery is recommended.
  • Fuses: Master in-line fuse (30 amp) for the complete electrical system. Kohler EFI engines have three additional engine fuses.
  • Hydraulic System: Two integrated hydrostatic transmissions. Uses SAE 20W50 motor oil, 15W50 synthetic oil, or 20W50 synthetic oil. Hustler® Full Synthetic 20W50 Hydrostatic Transmission Oil is recommended for maximum transmission life.
  • Tire Pressure: Drive wheels and front wheels: 8-12 psi (55-83 KPa).
  • Fuel: Regular unleaded gasoline with an octane rating of 87 or higher. Maximum 10% ethanol (E10) is permitted. Fuels with greater than 10% ethanol (E15, E20, E85) void warranty and are not approved.
  • Torque Values:
    • Wheel (lug) nuts: 70 ft-lbs (95 N•m)
    • Blade spindle bolt top: 73 ft-lbs (99 N•m)
    • Blade spindle bolt bottom: 118 ft-lbs (160 N•m)
    • ROPS mounting bolts: 73 ft-lbs (99 N•m)
    • Seat belt mounting hardware: 48 ft-lbs (65 N•m)
  • Deck Cutting Height Adjustment: Adjustable in 1/4" (6.4 mm) increments.
  • Anti-Scalp Wheels: Can be installed in three positions, located 1" (25.4 mm), 1.5" (38.1 mm), or 2" (50.8 mm) below the mower blades, depending on desired cutting height.

Usage Features:

  • SmoothTrak™ Steering System: Provides sensitive and responsive control for speed, direction, stopping, and park brake functions, enabling efficient maneuvering and zero-radius turns.
  • Control Panel: Includes an ignition switch, throttle control, choke control (for Kawasaki engines), mower blade engage/disengage switch, hour meter, oil pressure light, and engine malfunction light (for Kohler EFI engines). A fuel gauge is also present.
  • Safety Start Interlock System: Prevents unintentional engine starting. Requires steering control levers to be in the park brake position and the deck clutch switch to be disengaged before the engine will start. The engine will stop if the operator rises from the seat with the deck clutch engaged or steering levers out of neutral.
  • ROPS (Roll Over Protective Structure): Designed to minimize injury or death from rollovers. Must be secured in the raised position with the seat belt fastened during operation. Can be folded down for low-clearance areas, but the seat belt should not be worn in this position.
  • Deck Lift Pedal: Used to raise or lower the deck and adjust cutting height.
  • Bypass Valves: Allow the mower to be moved manually if the engine stalls.
  • Auxiliary USB Port: Available for charging devices.
  • Fuel Shut-off Valve: Located behind the seat platform, prevents fuel flow to the engine when closed.
  • Slope Operation: Recommended for slopes of 15 degrees or less. Emphasizes slow, gradual movements and avoiding sudden changes in speed or direction to prevent loss of traction or control.

Maintenance Features:

  • Routine Maintenance Schedule: Detailed checklists for daily, weekly (50 hours), monthly (100 hours), and annual (300 hours) service intervals, covering inspections, fluid changes, and component checks.
  • Engine Oil and Filter: Daily checks, initial change after 50 hours, then every 100 hours (or 300 hours for Kohler Pro Extended Life Oil Filter & 10W50 engine oil).
  • Engine Air Filter: Maintenance per schedule, replacement when dirty or damaged. Cleaning is not recommended.
  • Hydraulic System Oil and Filter: Initial change after 75 hours or 1 year, then every 200 hours or 2 years. Oil level checks weekly or every 50 hours.
  • Fuel Evaporation System Filter: Checked and replaced every 300 hours or annually.
  • Mower Blades: Daily inspection for sharpness and damage. Sharpening and balancing procedures are provided. Replacement of bent, cracked, or broken blades is crucial. Blade holding tool (P/N 381442) is available.
  • Belts: Frequent inspection for wear, cuts, tears, separation, cracking, and slipping. Replacement as needed.
  • Tires: Regular pressure checks to ensure level mowing.
  • Lubrication: Use SAE multi-purpose grease.
  • Seat Belt Maintenance: Daily inspection for cuts, fraying, discoloration, or damage.
  • ROPS Inspection: Initial inspection after 20 hours, then every 500 hours or six months. Includes checking mounting bolt torque.
  • Storage Procedures: Detailed steps for preparing the engine, battery, and mower for extended storage, including fuel stabilization, oil changes, battery removal and charging, and cleaning.
  • New Season Preparation: Steps to prepare the mower for operation after storage, including cleaning, fluid checks, and battery installation.
  • Troubleshooting Guide: Provides common symptoms, probable causes, and suggested remedies for operational issues.
