Warning: If an HSL cable is pulled accidentally, it may result in the HSL connection being lost to frames
that were in a loop. If this occurs, follow the Power down, power on instructions (See page 455) below to
power down the frames, reconnect the HSL cable, and power the frames back on.
Note: When exchanging HSL optical cables use the optical cleaning kit and procedures. If you are
replacing a cable between a system unit and an expansion unit, connect the expansion unit end of the
cable first. See symbolic FRU “OPT_CLN” on page 407 for additional information on the optical cleaning
kit and procedures.
Were you sent to this symbolic FRU as a result of a B4xx SRC?
v No: The loop number may be given in the FRU description and location information of the SAL in
decimal format. The loop number is in the left four digits of word 7 of the SRC in hexadecimal format. In
the table below is a list of system models, towers, expansion units and machine types with their
corresponding HSL connections in each of them.
v Yes: Perform the following:
1. Use the location given in the SRC table to determine the failing HSL port.
2. On the HSL link with the problem, exchange the HSL cables first.
3. If the problem remains, exchange the interposer cards or ribbon cables.
4. Finally, if the problem persists, exchange the FRUs containing the embedded HSL links.
In the table below is a list of system models, towers, expansion units, and machine types with their
corresponding HSL connections in each of them.

Model 270
1. Record the processor feature
code (characters 5 through 8
of function 20 on the control
panel).
2. Use Table 1. Model 270
Diagrams and Tables by
Processor Feature Code in the
Loations Model 270 topic,
to determine the name and
location of the FRU containing
the Network Interface
Controller (NIC).
For all Model 270 systems
There is an HSL ribbon cable from the system unit backplane (position MB1) to
the external HSL ports on the frame.
For systems where the Network Interface Controller (NIC) is embedded in the
system unit backplane (position MB1)
v There is an internal HSL connection from the NIC to the HSL I/O bridge
embedded in the system unit backplane.
v There is an internal HSL connection from the HSL I/O bridge component
embedded in the system unit backplane to the HSL ribbon cable port on the
system unit backplane.
For
systems where the Network Interface Controller (NIC) is embedded in the
processor card (position M02)
v There is an internal HSL connection from the NIC embedded in the processor
card to the HSL I/O bridge embedded in the system unit backplane (position
MB1).
v There is an internal HSL connection from the HSL I/O bridge component
embedded in the system unit backplane to the HSL ribbon cable port on the
system unit backplane.
Model 820
v There is an HSL ribbon cable from the system unit backplane (position MB1)
to the external HSL ports on the frame.
v There is an internal HSL connection from the NIC embedded in the processor
card (position M03) to the HSL I/O bridge embedded in the system unit
backplane (position MB1).
v There is an internal HSL connection from the HSL I/O bridge component
embedded in the system unit backplane to the HSL ribbon cable port on the
system unit backplane.
