Overview

The Ideal Halo control is a versatile thermostat designed to manage both heating temperature and hot water schedules in your home. It comes in two main variants: the Halo Heat & System RF, which is a non-connected control, and the Halo Heat & System Wi-Fi, which offers internet connectivity and app control.

Function Description:

The Halo control is a battery-powered, wireless device that communicates with a Smart Interface wired into your boiler using the Zigbee protocol. For the Wi-Fi variant, it also connects to your home Wi-Fi network, allowing for remote control via the Halo app, available on Google Play and the Apple App Store. The app itself is free to use, and for those with the RF version, an upgrade to app-controlled heating is possible for a connection fee. The Halo manages central heating zones and hot water, displaying current room temperature, target temperature, and the active mode (Auto, Manual, or Off) on its screen. It also indicates when hot water is on and when heating is active with an orange dot and a flame symbol, respectively.

Usage Features:

General Navigation:

The Halo features a central dial for adjusting temperature and navigating menus. Pressing the dial alternates between heating and hot water control. Left and right-hand buttons are used for menu entry and mode switching, respectively.

Heating Control:

  • Mode Selection: You can choose from Auto, Manual, or Off modes.
    • Auto Mode: Runs heating according to pre-set scheduled times and temperatures.
    • Manual Mode: Allows you to manually control the temperature by turning the dial, with no set schedules.
    • Off Mode: Sets heating to a low temperature (default 5°C) for frost protection. To switch modes, press the right-hand button, scroll with the dial, and push to select.
  • Plus Hours (Extend Heating): If you're in Auto mode and want to maintain the current temperature beyond the scheduled time, press and hold the dial. A menu will appear, allowing you to select how long to extend the heating for. Turn the dial to choose the duration and push or press the right button to confirm. The home screen will then display an "override" icon. This is useful if your routine changes, and you want heating to stay on longer than usual.
  • Override (Temporary Temperature Adjustment): In Auto mode, you can temporarily adjust the heating temperature by simply turning the dial to your desired setting. This new temperature will remain active until the next scheduled change. The "override" icon will appear on the home screen. This feature is handy for boosting heating for a short period, for example, if you're feeling chilly or staying up later on a weekend.
  • Schedules: The Halo comes with a pre-set heating schedule (e.g., 6:00am-8:00am 21°C, 8:00am-4:00pm OFF, etc.). You can customize this schedule via the "timed heating schedule" section in the main menu. Each Halo unit is programmed independently. To edit, use the dial to navigate between days, then push the dial or right button when a day is highlighted. You can edit start/end times and temperatures for each heating period. You can also add up to 6 heating events per day. A "copy day" feature allows you to duplicate schedules across multiple days. Schedules help balance comfort and energy efficiency, allowing you to tailor heating to your lifestyle, including different weekend routines.

Hot Water Control:

  • Accessing Hot Water Functions: From the heating home screen, press the dial to switch to hot water control. Alternatively, press the menu button, scroll to "Hot Water Control," and confirm. Press the dial again to switch back to heating.
  • Mode Selection: Hot water can be run in Auto, On, or Off modes.
    • Auto Mode: Runs hot water according to pre-set scheduled times and temperatures.
    • On Mode: Hot water is permanently on.
    • Off Mode: Hot water is permanently off. To change modes, use the right-hand button, scroll with the dial, and push to select.
  • Boost (Temporary Hot Water Boost): If you're in Auto mode and want hot water outside of the schedule, simply turn the dial. A menu will appear, letting you select how long to boost hot water for. Turn the dial to choose the duration and push or press the right button to confirm. An "override" icon will appear on the home screen. This is useful if you come home early and need hot water before its scheduled time.
  • Schedules: Similar to heating, the Halo has a pre-set hot water schedule (e.g., 6:00am-8:00am ON, 8:00am-4:00pm OFF, etc.). You can modify this in the "timed hot water schedule" section of the main menu. You can edit start/end times and the on/off status for each hot water period, and add up to 6 hot water events per day. The "copy day" feature is also available for hot water schedules.

Additional Features:

  • Holiday Mode: Temporarily turns heating and hot water off. Select this function in the menu and use the dial to set the number of days.
  • Support Page: Provides information for installers or technical experts, such as software version and wireless signal strength.
  • Child Lock: To lock the control, press and hold both the left and right-hand buttons simultaneously until an icon appears. Repeat to unlock.
  • Date & Time: If the date and time on the screen are incorrect, you can adjust them in the menu.
  • Advanced Settings: This section is for installers or technical experts to make adjustments and find information about the Halo.
  • Fault Notification: If a fault occurs, a fault symbol will appear on the home screen. Press the left-hand button for more information about the fault.

Maintenance Features:

Changing Batteries:

A red, empty battery symbol on the screen indicates that the Halo batteries need replacement. The Halo unit can be desk-mounted or wall-mounted. To access the batteries, gently pull the Halo away from its rear housing using the finger grabs at the top and bottom. Do not use a screwdriver. Replace the old batteries with 4 new AA Alkaline batteries, ensuring correct orientation. Position the Halo back onto the rear housing and push until it clicks into place. After battery replacement, the Halo will undergo a short synchronization process to reconnect with the Smart Interface before returning to the home screen.

Troubleshooting:

  • Halo Not Communicating with Smart Interface (CF01 Fault): If this message appears, check the Halo's battery level, the power indicator on the Smart Interface, and the distance between the Halo and Smart Interface. If a Zigbee booster is used, ensure it's turned on. If the issue persists, contact Ideal customer support. In this fault condition, heating will continue in Failsafe mode, where the schedule operates but the boiler's output temperature for heating is reduced. Hot water output temperature remains unchanged. You can also manually switch the boiler On/Off using the Override button on the Smart Interface, which disables Failsafe mode and allows manual boiler control until the connection is restored.
  • Smart Wiring Centre Not Communicating with Smart Interface (CF02 Fault): If this message appears, check all power connections and the distance between the Smart Wiring Centre and the boiler's Smart Interface. If a Zigbee booster is used, ensure it's turned on. If the issue persists, contact Ideal customer support. During this fault, heating zone valves will need to be manually operated via buttons on the Smart Wiring Centre. This override mode is disabled once communication is restored.
  • Boiler and Control Faults: If a fault icon appears on the home screen, press the left-hand button to view the fault details and recommendations.
  • Lost Pairing Between Halo and Smart Interface: If the Halo loses pairing, a screen will prompt you to check if the Smart Interface is in pairing mode before proceeding. To re-pair, refer to section H in the Halo Heat & System installation instructions, which can be found on idealheating.com.

The Halo Smart Interface, installed in the boiler, and the Halo Smart Wiring Centre (for multi-zone systems) are key components. While you typically won't interact with them directly, their LED indicators can help diagnose technical issues. Both have Failsafe/Override features to allow boiler operation if wireless communication is lost. The Smart Interface has LEDs for Power, Boiler activity, Connectivity (for Wi-Fi models), and Zigbee connection, along with an Override button and a Pairing button. The Smart Wiring Centre has LEDs for Power/Override, Pair, Heating Zone 1, Heating Zone 2 (if applicable), and Hot Water, along with buttons for manual override of zone valves.
