Do you have a question about the inbody M20 and is the answer not in the manual?

Overview

The InBody M20 is a multi-frequency body composition analyzer designed for medical professionals to assess nutritional, obesity, and hydration status in both healthy and acutely or chronically ill populations. It utilizes bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) to measure total body water, body fat mass, lean mass, and fat mass, providing insights into muscle development, nutrition, and obesity risk through regular check-ups. The device is intended for indoor use, but can be used outdoors if specific environmental conditions (temperature 10-40°C, relative humidity 30-75% RH, atmospheric pressure 70-106kPa) are met.

Technical Specifications

The InBody M20 performs 3 impedance measurements using 3 different frequencies (5 kHz, 50 kHz, 250 kHz). It also measures resistance (R), reactance (Xc), and phase angle (PA) at these three frequencies. The electrode method is a tetra-polar 8-point tactile clamp type or a tetra-polar adhesive type electrode. Measurement is conducted using the Simultaneous Multi-frequency Impedance Measurement (SMFIM) method.

Measurement Modes:

  • Impedance (Z): Provides impedance (Z), resistance (R), reactance (Xc), and phase angle (PA) for each measurement frequency.
  • Body Water Trend (BWT): Offers detailed body composition results including impedance, reactance, resistance, phase angle, skeletal muscle mass, body fat mass, percent body fat, BMI, fat-free mass, protein, minerals, bone mineral content, body cell mass, total body water, intracellular water, extracellular water, ECW ratio, soft lean mass, basal metabolic rate, FMI, FFMI, BIVA plot, R0, and R∞.

Usage Features

The InBody M20 offers a user-friendly interface with a touchscreen LCD display that guides users through each step of the test, provides test results, and allows for environmental settings.

Installation: The device components include the InBody M20 unit, forceps electrodes (adhesion type) cables (2EA), clamp electrodes (contact type) cables (2EA), power adapter, power cable, portable bag, user's manual, USB thumb drive (1EA), disposable electrodes (BWA-ES100) (1Pack), and replacement clips. It can be installed in a portable bag or an optional portable cart. Electrode cables are connected by matching numbered connectors on the cables with corresponding numbers on the InBody M20. The power adapter connects to the power inlet on the right side, and the power cord plugs into a grounded 3-prong outlet.

Initial Setup: The device is turned on by pressing and holding the power button for about three seconds. The power button's LED color indicates operation status (blue for on, no color for off). The initial setup includes configuring sound (beep on/off), brightness (adjustable from 1 to 10), date and time, and language and unit settings (supports 26 languages, cm/kg or ft in/lb). An administrator password can be set or changed for data management.

Measurement Instructions:

  • Impedance Measurement Mode: Allows selection of up to three measurement frequencies (5 kHz, 50 kHz, 250 kHz). Users can choose between manual or continuous measurement. For continuous mode, the interval (50ms to 1 hour) and number of measurements (up to 1,000 times, max 24 hours total) can be set. Displayed results can be customized to show impedance (Z), resistance (R), reactance (Xc), and phase angle (PA). The "Show Electrode Placement" feature provides guidance on proper electrode connection for both clamp and forceps types. The START button initiates measurement, and its status indicates readiness or error conditions (e.g., poor cable connection, low battery).
  • Body Water Trend Measurement Mode: Monitors body water, intracellular water, extracellular water, and extracellular water ratio. Users register subject information (sex, age, height, weight, ID), set measurement intervals (1 to 60 minutes), and select the measurement area (Arm-Leg Right or Arm-Leg Left). Up to six result items can be displayed. Similar to impedance mode, "Show Electrode Placement" guides electrode connection, and the START button indicates measurement readiness.

Measurement Posture: For accurate and reproducible results, the examinee should lie down for 10-15 minutes before the test to allow body water to disperse evenly. Arms should be slightly beyond 15 degrees from the trunk, and legs should be shoulder-width apart to prevent contact.

Data Management: The InBody M20 offers data storage, search, result presentation, deletion, and copy functions for up to 1,000 data points per measurement mode. Data is saved automatically in impedance mode, while body water trend mode requires an ID for new data. Data can be viewed, filtered by ID or date, and deleted selectively or entirely. Data can also be copied to a USB device in CSV format, organized into 'inbody_imp', 'inbody_bwm', and 'lookinbody' folders.

Maintenance Features

The InBody M20 is designed for low maintenance, with regular inspection and calibration not typically required.

Cleaning:

  • Main Body: Clean with specially-formulated InBody Tissues or an absorbent, lint-free towel moistened with isopropyl alcohol. Avoid liquids entering the device.
  • Touchscreen: Clean with warm water or liquid crystal cleaner. Do not use abrasive cleaners to prevent scratches.
  • Electrodes: Do not wipe with cleaning solutions that may cause corrosion. Use an InBody Tissue containing alcohol or physiological saline to gently wipe the electrodes.

Cable and Electrode Care:

  • Handle electrode cables with care; do not pull them forcefully.
  • Avoid dropping electrodes, as impacts can damage internal electronic components.
  • When disconnecting cables, grasp the cylindrical connector, not the cable itself, to prevent breakage.
  • Replace adhesive clips when their bite strength weakens or they are damaged.
  • Inspect all cables (electrode, power adapter, power) for damage. Do not use cables with damaged wire sheaths.

Battery Care: The built-in lithium-ion battery must be charged at least every 6 months to prevent performance degradation from leakage or self-discharge.

Safety Precautions:

  • Do not plug/unplug power cables with wet hands.
  • Use the provided power adapter and power cord with a grounded 3-prong outlet.
  • Avoid installing the device near sources of electrical interference (fluorescent lights, large AC motors, high-frequency thermal therapy equipment, heating appliances) to prevent inaccurate results.
  • Do not disassemble the equipment, as this can cause electric shock, injury, malfunction, inaccurate results, and void the warranty.
  • Do not apply shock or heat to the device, as lithium-ion batteries risk explosion or fire.
  • If external power is unreliable, use the internal battery (up to 4 hours life).
  • Do not use the InBody M20 with pacemakers or other life-support medical devices.
  • Pregnant individuals should consult a doctor before use.
  • Do not eat before testing (wait at least two hours after a meal).
  • Test before exercising, and avoid saunas or baths before measurement.
  • Ensure wrists and ankles are clean and moisturized for optimal electrode contact.
  • When transporting, turn off the device, remove all cables, and pack components in the portable bag using provided protective materials.
  • Do not touch the patient and the USB Host or Slave ports simultaneously during operation.
  • The device is a class B electromagnetic wave compatible device. Bluetooth uses the same frequency band as many electronic devices, which can cause radio interference.
