Theengine starter activates and the engine will
start. As soon as the engine has started, release
the keyimmediately.Itwillreturn to the ON po-
sition.
NOTE
Forvehicles fitted with Stop/StartSystem:
Whenthe engine is automatically stopped by the
Stop/StartSystem the ignition switch canstillbeop-
erated as usual.
At the end of ajourney turn the ignition OFF to avoid a
flatbattery. TheStop/StartSystem doesnotautomati-
callyturn ignition off.
WARNING
If children are left unsupervised in the vehicle, they
could:
•
Open doors, therebyendangering other persons
or road users.
•
Get out and be struckbyoncoming traffic.
•
Operate vehicle equipment and become trapped,
for example.
In addition, the children could also set the vehicle in
motion,for example, if they:
•
Releasethe parking brake.
•
Shiftthe automatic transmission out of position P
(Park) or shiftmanual transmission into N(Neu-
tral).
•
Startthe engine.
There is ariskofanaccident and injury:
When leavingthe vehicle, alwaystakethe keywith
youand lockthe vehicle. Never leave children and ani-
mals unattended in the vehicle. Keep the keys out of
thereach of children.

Combustion engines emit poisonousexhaust
gasessuchascarbonmonoxide.Inhalingthese ex-
haustgases leads to poisoning. There is ariskof
fatalinjury. Therefore never leave the engine run-
ning in enclosed spaces with out sufficient venti-
lation.

Flammable materials introduced throughenviron-
mentalinfluenceorbyanimals canignite if in con-
tact with the exhaust systemorparts of the en-
gine that heat up.There is ariskoffire.
Carryout regular checks to make sure that
there arenoflammable foreign materials in
the engine compartment or in the exhaust
system.
NOTE
•
Do not depressthe accelerator when starting the
engine.
•
The engine runs at ahigher engine speed during
the cold startprocedure so that the catalytic con-
vertercan reachoperating temperature more
quickly. The sound of the engine maychangeasa
result.
MANUAL TRANSMISSION
Youcan only startthe engine when the clutch
pedal is fully depressed.
•
Depressthe brakepedal and keep it depressed
•
Depressthe clutch pedal fully
•
Shift to N(Neutral).
