Illustration 1: If the radar sensors detect ave-
hicleinthe detection zone, the BSWindicator
light
j
1located by the outside mirrors illumi-
nates.
Illustration2:
Ifthe turn signalis thenactivated,
the system chimes (twice) and the BSWindica-
tor light flashes. The BSWindicator light contin-
ues to flash until the detected vehiclesleave the
detection zone.
NOTE
•
The BSWindicator lights illuminate forafew sec-
onds when the ignitionswitchisplacedinthe ON
position.
•
The brightnessofthe BSWindicator lights is ad-
justed automatically depending on the brightness
of theambient light.
•
If avehicle comes into the detection zone after the
driveractivates the turn signal, then only the BSW
indicator light flashes and no chime sounds. (See
“Another vehicleapproaching from behind” later
in thissection
.)
Achimesoundsiftheradar sensorshavealready
detected vehicles when the driver activates the
turn signal.
WARNING
•
Do not usethe BSWsystem when towing atrailer
because the system maynot function properly.
•
Excessive noise (for example audio system vol-
ume, open vehicle window) will interfere with the
chime sound, and it maynot be heard.
•
Theradar sensors maynot be able to detect and
activate BSWwhen certain objects are present
suchas:
– Pedestrians, bicycles, animals
– Several types of vehicles suchasmotor-
cycles
– Oncoming vehicles
– Vehicles remaining in the detection zone
when youacceleratefrom astop.
– Avehicle merging into anadjacent lane
at aspeed approximately the same as
your vehicle.
– Avehicle approaching rapidly from be-
hind.
– Avehicle whichyour vehicle overtakes
rapidly.
•
Severe weather or road spray conditionsmay re-
duce the ability of the radar to detect other ve-
hicles.
•
The radar sensors detection zone is designed
based on astandard lane width. When driving in a
wider lane, the radar sensors maynot detect ve-
hicles in an adjacent lane. When driving in anar-
rowlane, the radar sensors maydetect vehicles
driving twolanes away.
•
The radar sensors aredesigned toignore moststa-
tionary objects, however objects suchasguard-
rails, walls, foliage and parked vehicles may occa-
sionally be detected. Thisisanormal operating
condition.
