Turn the keytothe ACCorONposition in the
ignition switch. The system carries out aself-di-
agnosis.
The <PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF> and <PASSENGER
AIR BAG ON> indicator lampsmustlight up si-
multaneously forapproximately six seconds.
The indicator lampsdisplay the status of the
front-passengerfront air bag:
•
<PASSENGER AIR BAG ON> lights up: the front-pas-
senger front air bag is enabled. If,inthe event of an
accident, alldeployment criteria are met, the front-
passenger front air bag is deployed.
•
<PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF> lights up: the front-pas-
senger front air bag is disabled. It will then not be
deployedinthe event of an accident.
If the status of the front-passenger front air bag
changes while the vehicle is in motion, an air
bag display message appearsinthe vehicle in-
formationdisplay (see
“Supplemental Restraint
System (SRS) air bag warning light” earlier in thissec-
tion
).When the frontpassengerseatis occupied,
alwayspay attention to the <PASSENGER AIR
BAGON> and <PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF> indica-
torlamps. Be aware ofthe status of the front-
passenger front air bagboth before and during
th
ej
ourney.
If there
is
no
ch
ild restraint system fitted to the
front-passenger seat, the frontpassenger must
sit
•
With the seat belt fastened correctly.
•
In an almost upright position with their back
against the seatback.
•
With their feet resting on the floor, ifpossible.
If the frontpassengerdoes not observe these
conditions, the automatic front-passenger front
air bag deactivation system maybeinfluenced,
e.g. because the front passenger:
•
Transfers their weight by supporting themselves
on avehicle armrest.
•
Sits in suchaway that their weight is raised from
the seat cushion.
The front-passengerfront air bag maybedis-
abled by mistakeasaresult of these or similar
actions. In thiscase, the <PASSENGER AIR BAG
OFF> indicator lamp lights up permanently. The
front-passengerfront airbag does not then de-
ploy during an accident.
WARNING
If the <PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF> indicator lamp is lit,
thefront-passenger front air bag is disabled. It will
not be deployed in the event of an accident and can-
not perform its intended protective function. Aperson
in thefront passenger seat could then, for example,
come into contact with the vehicle’s interior,espe-
cially if the person is sitting tooclose to the dash-
board. Thisposes an increased risk of injuryoreven
fatalinjury.
When the front-passenger seat is occupied, always
make sure that:
•
The classification of the person in the front pas-
senger seatis correct and that the frontpassenger
front air bag is enabledordisabledinaccordance
with the person in the front passenger seat.
•
The front-passenger seat has been moved back as
farbackaspossible.
•
The person is seated correctly.
If yousecure achild on the front passenger seat in a
rearward-facing child restraint system and the <PAS-
SENGER AIR BAG ON> indicator lamp lights up, the
passenger’s air bag could be deployed in the event of
an accident. The child could be struckbythe air bag.
There is an increased risk of injury, possiblyeven fa-
tal. In thiscase, alwaysensure that the passenger’s
air bag is disabled. The <PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF>
indicator lamp must light up.
If the <PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF> indicator lamp
remainsoffand/orthe<PASSENGERAIR BAG ON>
indicator lamp lights up, do not installarear-
ward-facing child restraint system on the front-
passenger seat. Forfurther information see
“Problems with automatic front-passenger air bag
deactivation” later in thissection
