Overview

The GL20-RTU-PN Communication Interface Module is a PROFINET communication interface module designed to support PROFINET communication with master devices such as Siemens S7-1500 and S7-1200 PLCs. This module acts as a remote terminal unit (RTU) within a PROFINET network, facilitating the connection of up to 16 GL20 I/O modules. For systems requiring more than 16 I/O modules, an expansion power supply module is necessary for every 16 additional I/O modules. The module's design and functionality are detailed in this user guide, which covers mechanical and electrical installation, as well as programming examples.

Function Description

The GL20-RTU-PN module serves as a crucial link in distributed I/O systems, enabling PROFINET master devices to communicate with and control various GL20 I/O modules. Its primary function is to translate PROFINET communication protocols into signals understood by the connected I/O modules, and vice versa. This allows for real-time data exchange between the PLC and the field devices, supporting efficient automation and control. The module operates in RT (Real-Time) mode, ensuring timely communication for critical applications. It supports PROFINET version V2.3 and offers networking capabilities through its two PROFINET interfaces. The physical layer operates on 100BASE-TX, supporting communication speeds of 10 Mbit/s (standard Ethernet) and 100 Mbit/s (PROFINET) in full duplex mode. It accommodates linear, star, and tree topologies, providing flexibility in network design. The module also supports Open IE, including TCP/IP, SNMP, and LLDP, for broader network integration. A key feature is its ability to upload error codes from local modules to the PLC, aiding in system diagnosis. Furthermore, it supports "zero configuration" for module replacement of the same type, simplifying maintenance and reducing downtime. A factory reset function is also available for the GL20-RTU-PN module itself.

The module incorporates various indicators to provide visual feedback on its operational status. The PWR (Power) indicator, when solid green, confirms that the power supply is switched on. If it's off, the module is initializing. A flashing green PWR indicator signifies that the module is in parameter configuration mode or waiting to connect to the master device. The RUN (Running) indicator, when single flashing green, indicates that the module is in safe operational mode, allowing inputs to be read but preventing output updates. A solid green RUN indicator means the module communication is normal. The ERR (Communication error) indicator helps diagnose communication issues. If it's off, there's no communication error. A solid red ERR indicator suggests no expansion module is present, while a flashing red indicator points to an inconsistent configuration of expansion modules. A single flash red ERR indicates that the GL20-RTU-PN module is offline or an expansion module synchronization error has occurred. The SF (Fault) indicator, when off, means the expansion module is normal. A solid red SF indicates a local bus error, and a flashing red SF signals an expansion module fault. These indicators are vital for quick troubleshooting and understanding the module's state without needing to access software tools.

The module also facilitates analog-to-digital and digital-to-analog conversion for various input and output ranges, supporting a wide array of sensors and actuators. For instance, it can convert analog output ranges like -10 V to 10 V, 0 V to 10 V, -5 V to 5 V, 0 V to 5 V, 1 V to 5 V, 0 mA to 20 mA, and 4 mA to 20 mA into corresponding digital values, typically ranging from -20000 to 20000 or -32000 to 32000. Similarly, it handles analog input ranges with equivalent digital conversions. This versatility makes the GL20-RTU-PN suitable for diverse industrial applications requiring precise analog signal processing.

Usage Features

The GL20-RTU-PN module is designed for ease of installation and integration into existing control systems. It is mounted onto a DIN rail in conformity with IEC 60715 standards, allowing for side-by-side installation of multiple modules. The mechanical installation process involves aligning the module with the DIN rail and pushing it until the mounting hook automatically locks into place. For multiple modules, top and bottom guides ensure secure hookup. An end cover is provided to prevent exposure of metal pins, and an end plate can be mounted on either side of the module assembly to prevent sliding. Removal is straightforward, requiring a slotted screwdriver to pry the DIN rail mounting hook upwards before pulling the module away.

Electrical installation emphasizes safety and proper wiring. Communication is achieved using shielded Ethernet cables (S-FTP, Cat5) to ensure reliable data transmission and prevent signal attenuation. The maximum cable length between devices is 100m. Power supply connections require 3-core unshielded cables, with specific cable lug and diameter recommendations provided for optimal performance and safety. The module's power input terminals are clearly marked for 24 VDC, and it includes through-wiring for unwired terminals, simplifying power distribution.

The module's software features contribute to its operational flexibility. Its expansion capability allows for connection of up to 16 modules, providing scalability for various application needs. The PROFINET switch capability enables networking, supporting various topologies. The "Share_in" and "Share_out" functionalities offer advanced programming options, allowing real-time monitoring of local bus status and PROFINET communication status. These values can be used for program judgment and to retrieve module version information, aiding in system diagnostics and maintenance. The "Share_in" and "Share_out" modules must be added at the end of the module list for proper functionality.

Maintenance Features

Maintenance and inspection of the GL20-RTU-PN module are crucial for ensuring its longevity and reliable operation. The user guide provides clear safety precautions, emphasizing that maintenance must be carried out by personnel with the necessary electrical training and experience. It is critical to disconnect all external power supplies before performing any maintenance, cleaning, or wiring tasks to prevent electric shock or module malfunction. This includes cleaning the module, re-tightening screws on terminal blocks or connectors, and removing/connecting communication wirings.

The module's diagnostic capabilities, indicated by the ERR and SF LEDs, are invaluable for troubleshooting. The user guide provides a detailed fault diagnosis table that correlates LED indicator statuses with specific fault descriptions, causes, and recommended solutions. For example, a solid red ERR indicator might suggest that an expansion module does not exist, with the solution being to check if the module is properly installed and powered. A flashing red ERR could indicate inconsistent configuration of expansion modules, prompting a check of the number and installation sequence. Similarly, SF indicators help diagnose local bus errors, expansion module faults, I/O module configuration failures, and power supply issues like overvoltage or undervoltage. These detailed diagnostic aids allow maintenance personnel to quickly identify and resolve problems, minimizing downtime.

The "zero configuration for module replacement" feature simplifies the process of replacing a faulty PN module of the same type, reducing the need for extensive reconfiguration and speeding up recovery. The ability to perform a factory reset on the GL20-RTU-PN module itself also aids in restoring the module to a known good state if software-related issues arise. However, it is important to note that factory reset of expansion modules is not supported. Regular checks of the DC power provided by the switching-mode power supply unit are recommended to ensure stability and prevent equipment damage. Adherence to environmental specifications, such as operating temperature, humidity, and atmospheric conditions, is also essential for preventing deterioration and ensuring the product's lifespan. The product warranty instructions outline conditions under which maintenance will be charged, highlighting the importance of following user instructions and using the product within its intended scope.
