Overview

This document outlines the quick setup and features of an Insignia replacement remote, model NS-RMTSAM21, designed for Samsung TVs. The remote is pre-programmed for most Samsung TVs, but also offers extensive customization options for controlling other devices and learning new functions.

Function Description

The Insignia NS-RMTSAM21 is a replacement remote control primarily intended for use with Samsung TVs. Its core function is to provide a universal control solution, allowing users to operate their Samsung TV and, optionally, a connected soundbar or audio receiver. The remote comes pre-programmed for most Samsung TVs, ensuring out-of-the-box compatibility for many users. If the initial programming doesn't work, a simple setup process is available to establish control. Beyond basic TV operation, the remote offers advanced features such as volume control for soundbars or audio receivers, the ability to learn functions from an original remote, and programmable shortcut buttons for streaming apps. This makes it a versatile tool for managing a home entertainment setup with a single device.

Usage Features

The Insignia replacement remote offers a range of usage features designed for convenience and expanded control:

  • Initial Setup for Samsung TVs:

    • The remote is pre-programmed for most Samsung TVs.
    • If buttons don't work, users should ensure the TV is on and not in standby mode.
    • To set up, hold down the red 'A' and blue 'D' buttons simultaneously until the power button LED blinks twice.
    • Point the remote at the TV and press and hold the power button.
    • As soon as the TV turns off, immediately release the power button. The LED will blink twice, indicating successful programming. Users have a three-second window to release the button before a different code is sent.
    • After turning the TV back on with the power button, users should test other buttons.
    • If some buttons don't work as expected, the setup process can be repeated using the 'MENU' or 'INFO' button instead of the power button.
  • Sound Bar or Audio Receiver Volume Control:

    • This feature allows the remote to control the volume of a connected soundbar or audio receiver.
    • Simple Setup:
      • Turn on the TV and audio device, ensuring audio is playing.
      • Hold down the volume '+' and '-' buttons together until the LED blinks twice.
      • Point the remote at the audio device and hold down the digit button corresponding to the brand of the audio device (e.g., '0' for Yamaha, '1' for Bose, '2' for Denon, '3' for Samsung/JBL/Harman/Kardon, '4' for LG/JVC, '5' for Marantz/Philips, '6' for Onkyo, '7' for Panasonic/Technics, '8' for Pioneer, '9' for Sony).
      • Release the digit button as soon as the audio device mutes. The LED will blink twice, confirming the code has been found.
      • The volume buttons should now control the audio device.
    • Audio Code Setup (for brands not listed in Simple Setup):
      • Locate the four-digit code for the audio device brand in the separate "Remote Codes List" document.
      • Hold down the volume '+' and '-' buttons together until the LED blinks twice.
      • Enter the four-digit code. The LED should blink twice on the last digit.
      • Test the volume '+' and '-' buttons and the mute button. If they don't work, repeat the process with the next code on the list.
    • Resetting Volume Control: To revert volume control back to the soundbar or audio receiver, hold down the green 'B' and yellow 'C' buttons until the LED blinks twice, then press '977'. The LED will blink four times, indicating the reset.
  • Turning on All Devices:

    • Once the soundbar or audio device is set up, users can turn on both the TV and the audio device simultaneously by holding down the power button for three seconds.
    • A quick press and release of the power button will only turn on the TV.
  • Learning Functions:

    • The remote can learn any function from an original remote.
    • Place both remotes on a flat surface, with their infrared eyes facing each other, 1-2 inches (2.5-5 cm) apart.
    • Hold down the green 'B' and yellow 'C' buttons on the new remote until the LED blinks twice.
    • Press '975' on the new remote.
    • On the new remote, press the button intended to learn a new function (e.g., volume +).
    • On the original remote, press the button with the desired function.
    • If the LED on the new remote blinks twice, the function has been learned. If it shows one long blink, the function was not learned correctly, and the process should be repeated.
    • For some remotes that send commands differently, try holding down the button on the original remote instead of pressing and releasing.
    • Repeat steps for additional functions. The remote can learn from multiple remotes, but only one function per button.
    • After teaching all desired functions, press and hold 'ENTER' until the LED blinks twice.
    • If learned buttons don't work as expected, repeat the entire learning process from step 1.
    • Deleting a Learned Function: To delete a learned function, hold down the green 'B' and yellow 'C' buttons until the LED blinks twice, then press '976'. Press the button on the new remote that you want to reset twice; the LED will blink twice, confirming deletion.
  • Adding an App to a Shortcut Button:

    • The remote has three App Shortcut buttons (A, B, C) for quick access to streaming apps like Netflix, HBO Now, Rakuten TV, or Hulu on a Smart TV.
    • To program:
      • Ensure the TV is on and the new remote is operating it.
      • Hold down an App Shortcut button (A, B, or C) until the LED blinks twice.
      • Press the exact sequence of buttons normally used to open the desired Streaming Service App (e.g., Home > Menu > Down (twice) > OK). Allow a few seconds for the TV to react. The remote remembers the timing.
      • Once the app starts on the TV, hold down the same App Shortcut button until the LED blinks twice and then goes off. The shortcut button is now programmed.
      • If the sequence doesn't work, it can be repeated to reprogram.

Maintenance Features

The primary maintenance feature for this device involves battery replacement and troubleshooting for optimal performance.

  • Battery Installation:
    • The remote requires two AAA batteries (not included).
    • Ensure the '+' and '-' symbols on the batteries match the corresponding symbols in the battery compartment.
  • Troubleshooting Learning Functions:
    • If experiencing difficulty with the learning function, installing new batteries is recommended.
  • Troubleshooting Setup and Functions:
    • If buttons do not work after initial setup, ensure the TV is on and not in standby mode.
    • For soundbar/audio receiver setup, if volume buttons don't work, try the next code on the list.
    • If learned functions don't work as expected, repeat the learning process from step 1.
    • If app shortcut sequences don't work, repeat the programming sequence.

The device is designed for ease of use and minimal maintenance, focusing on simple battery replacement and clear troubleshooting steps for its various programming features.
