Overview

This document describes the Insignia 10-sheet Cross Cut Shredder (models NS-S10CCBK and NS-S10CCBK-C), a device designed for securely disposing of sensitive documents and other materials.

Function Description

The Insignia 10-sheet Cross Cut Shredder is a personal document shredder that efficiently destroys paper, credit cards, compact discs, small staples, and small paper clips. It employs a cross-cut shredding style, reducing materials into small .2 × 1.4 inch (4 × 35 mm) particles, which provides a higher level of security for sensitive data compared to strip-cut shredders. The shredder is designed for home or small office use, offering a convenient way to protect personal and confidential information from unauthorized access. It features a 5.6-gallon (21 L) wastebasket capacity, allowing for a significant amount of shredded waste before needing to be emptied. The shredder head is equipped with a handle for easy lifting, facilitating the emptying process.

Usage Features

The shredder is straightforward to set up and operate. To begin, place the wastebasket upright on a level surface and securely attach the shredder head to the basket, ensuring it fits properly. Then, connect the power cord to a standard (120 V AC) power outlet; an extension cord should not be used.

The main control is a slide switch with three positions: FWD (Forward), AUTO OFF, and REV (Reverse).

  • AUTO: This is the primary operating mode. When the switch is set to AUTO, the shredder automatically starts shredding an item once it's inserted into the shredding slot. The POWER indicator lights green in this mode. After shredding, the machine stops automatically.
  • FWD: In this mode, the cutters run continuously forward. The POWER indicator lights green. This mode is recommended for ensuring any remaining paper in the slot is fully shredded or for clearing the slot. To stop the cutters in FWD mode, the switch must be moved to a different position.
  • OFF: This position turns off the shredder, deactivating all functions. It should be used when the shredder is not in use for prolonged periods, or before moving, transporting, cleaning, or emptying the wastebasket.
  • REV: This mode reverses the paper in the slot. It is primarily used to clear paper jams or to remove unshredded paper from the slot.

The shredder can handle up to 10 sheets of paper (75 g/m2 A4 paper) at a time, or one credit card or disc at a time. It's important not to exceed these capacities to prevent jams and ensure optimal performance. The shredding slot is designed to accept these materials efficiently.

The device includes several LED indicators to provide operational status feedback:

  • Overheat: This indicator lights up when the shredder has overheated. When lit, the machine stops shredding automatically. The shredder will recover once the indicator turns off, which typically requires a cool-down time of at least 30 minutes.
  • Overload: This indicator lights when the shredder is attempting to shred more than its maximum capacity (e.g., more than 10 sheets of paper or folded paper). In an overload situation, the cutter automatically turns off to prevent damage.
  • Power: This indicator lights green when the shredder is in use, indicating that it is receiving power and ready for operation.
  • Door open: This indicator lights when the shredder head is not correctly positioned on the wastebasket or if the wastebasket is not securely placed in the shredder. The shredder will not operate if this indicator is lit.

The wastebasket features a window, allowing users to visually monitor the fill level of shredded material. This helps in determining when the wastebasket needs to be emptied, which is recommended when it is approximately two-thirds full.

Maintenance Features

Proper maintenance ensures the longevity and optimal performance of the shredder.

  • Emptying the Wastebasket: When the wastebasket is approximately two-thirds full, slide the switch to OFF, unplug the power cord from the outlet, then lift up the shredder head using the handle and empty the wastebasket. Frequent emptying is recommended.
  • Clearing Jams: If a paper jam occurs, slide the switch to REV to return the paper. Once the paper is removed from the cutter, slide the switch back to AUTO to resume shredding. If the cutter won't stop, slide the switch to OFF, unplug the shredder, and then push the shredded paper down to ensure it is away from the shredder head. Then, slide the switch to REV to remove any extra paper, disc, or credit card.
  • Overheat Protection: The shredder is equipped with an overheat protection mechanism. If the Overheat indicator lights up, the shredder will automatically stop. Allow the shredder to cool down for at least 30 minutes before resuming use. This helps prevent motor damage from prolonged operation. The recommended duty cycle is 3 minutes ON / 30 minutes OFF to protect the machine.
  • Overload Protection: The shredder also has overload protection. If the Overload indicator lights up due to exceeding the shredding capacity, remove the excess paper from the cutter by sliding the switch to REV, then try again with a smaller amount of paper.
  • Placement: Ensure the shredder is always placed on a flat, level surface to prevent excessive noise and ensure stable operation.
  • Cleaning: Before cleaning, always deactivate the shredder by sliding the switch to OFF and disconnecting it from the electrical line. Do not spray or keep any aerosol products in or around the shredder. Only use shredder oil for maintenance, as specified in the safety information.
  • General Care: Avoid touching the document feed opening with hands, loose clothing, or jewelry. Keep hair away from the document feed opening. Do not put envelopes, adhesive material, newsprint, transparencies, laminated documents, continuous forms, cardboard, or hard and plastic materials (except credit cards) through the shredder, as these can damage the mechanism. Small staples and small paper clips are acceptable.
  • Safety: Always read and follow all safety instructions provided in the guide. Do not attempt to service the unit yourself, as this will void the warranty and may expose you to hazards. Any repairs must be performed by qualified service personnel. The product is not intended for use by children. Unplug the equipment when not in use for an extended period.
