Overview

The Intellitec Battery Guard® 1000 (12V) is a sophisticated device designed to safeguard your vehicle's batteries from excessive discharge, which can lead to damage or prevent the vehicle from starting. It achieves this by continuously monitoring the battery's voltage level to assess its state of charge. When the battery voltage drops below a predefined low voltage threshold for a specific duration, the Battery Guard® 1000 automatically disconnects the battery from the system load. This proactive measure ensures that the battery is protected from being drained to a harmful level, thereby extending its lifespan and maintaining its ability to start the vehicle.

A key feature of the Battery Guard® 1000 is its intelligent reconnection capability. If the device detects a charging potential for a specified period, it will automatically reconnect the system load. This typically occurs when a charging device, such as a shore power charger, is connected to the battery or when the vehicle's engine is running and the alternator is generating power. This ensures that once the battery is being recharged, the system loads are restored without manual intervention, providing seamless operation.

The device also offers manual control over system load connection and disconnection through a momentary switch input. Users can manually disconnect or reconnect the system loads at their discretion by simply pushing and releasing a pushbutton. To prevent rapid and undesirable cycling of the disconnect, the Battery Guard® 1000 incorporates a built-in state change delay of 5 seconds. It's important to note that if the user manually disconnects the system, the Battery Guard® 1000 will not automatically reconnect even if it senses charging. This allows for deliberate user control when necessary.

For maintenance and troubleshooting, the Battery Guard® 1000 includes an alarm output and a diagnostic LED. The alarm output is a high-side output, limited to 300 mA, which provides valuable information about the disconnect's state. When paired with Intellitec's Battery Guard Switch (part number 11-01085-001), this output is connected to an LED indicator, offering visual cues. The alarm LED provides three distinct indications:

  • Solid On: This indicates that the system loads are connected, and the battery voltage is above the low voltage threshold, signifying normal operation.
  • Flashing at ½ Hz: This warns that the system loads are connected, but the battery voltage has fallen below the low voltage threshold, prompting attention to the battery's charge level.
  • Solid Off: This indicates that the system loads are disconnected, either automatically due to low voltage or manually by the user.

In addition to the alarm output, the Battery Guard® 1000 module features a diagnostic LED located in the lower right corner, which helps in identifying various failure modes. This diagnostic LED provides specific blink codes:

  • 1 Blink: Indicates a failure to disconnect, suggesting an issue with the device's ability to isolate the battery from the load.
  • 2 Blinks: Indicates a failure to reconnect, pointing to a problem with restoring power to the system loads.
  • 3 Blinks: Indicates that the battery voltage is below the minimum disconnect voltage, which is a critical low-voltage state.

This diagnostic information is crucial for troubleshooting the Battery Guard® 1000. In situations where there's an issue and the operator needs to bypass the disconnect, a temporary workaround involves removing the system load wire from the Battery Guard 1000 terminal and moving it to the same side as the positive battery feed. However, a critical safety warning accompanies this procedure: before performing this task, all power sources must be disconnected. This includes unplugging the coach, turning off the generator, and disconnecting the battery's negative (-) terminal to prevent electrical hazards.

The Battery Guard® 1000 is designed with configurable operating parameters, offering flexibility for different applications. It comes with two sets of preconfigured parameters: one for chassis disconnects and another for coach disconnects. These parameters, which define thresholds like low voltage disconnect, isolation delay, minimum disconnect, charging voltage, reconnect delay, and state change delay, can vary depending on the device's operating mode. Users can refer to the 53-01118-200 Installation Guide for instructions on how to switch between these configurations, allowing the device to be optimized for specific vehicle types or battery systems. This adaptability ensures that the Battery Guard® 1000 can effectively protect a wide range of battery setups.
