Overview

This document describes the ITS Heat Pumps, a range of domestic heat pumps designed for efficient and environmentally friendly water heating. These units offer a modern and efficient alternative to traditional water heating systems, providing significant energy savings and a reduced carbon footprint.

Function Description

ITS Heat Pumps are designed to extract heat from the ambient air and transfer it to water, effectively heating domestic hot water. This process is highly efficient, as the heat pump only uses electricity to move heat, not to generate it directly. The units can operate in various climates and are designed to integrate with existing geysers or as part of a new hybrid system.

The core principle of operation involves a refrigerant cycle. A fan draws in ambient air, which passes over an evaporator coil. The refrigerant inside the coil absorbs heat from the air, causing it to vaporize. This low-pressure vapor then enters a compressor, where its pressure and temperature are increased. The hot, high-pressure vapor then flows to a condenser coil, where it transfers its heat to the domestic water, causing the water to heat up and the refrigerant to condense back into a liquid. Finally, the liquid refrigerant passes through an expansion valve, where its pressure and temperature drop, and it returns to the evaporator to repeat the cycle.

ITS heat pumps are capable of producing hot water at temperatures suitable for domestic use, typically up to 60°C. They are designed to be a "reverse air conditioner," extracting heat from the air rather than expelling it. This makes them a highly efficient solution for water heating, capable of producing four times the electrical energy used to drive the compressor in terms of heat output (i.e., 75% saving).

The ITS heat pump system can be integrated with existing geysers, utilizing a loading valve to direct hot water to the geyser. This integration can lead to a significant reduction in electricity consumption for water heating, potentially up to 40% or more. The system is designed to be user-friendly, with a digital controller that allows for easy operation and monitoring.

Usage Features

ITS Heat Pumps are designed for ease of use and integration.

  • Quiet Operation: The units are designed to operate quietly, making them suitable for installation in or around residential areas.
  • Aesthetically Pleasing Design: The heat pumps are designed to be visually appealing and can be installed anywhere around the house without being an eyesore.
  • User-Friendly Digital Controller: The units are equipped with a state-of-the-art digital controller that allows users to easily set the desired water temperature, view system status, and diagnose potential issues. The controller displays the current time, water temperature in the bottom of the tank, and the temperature of the water out of the heat pump.
  • Flexible Installation: The heat pumps can be installed horizontally or vertically, depending on the model and available space. Specific clearance requirements are provided to ensure optimal performance and airflow.
  • Integration with Existing Systems: The heat pumps can be easily integrated with existing geysers, providing a cost-effective upgrade to an energy-efficient water heating system.
  • Safety Features: The system includes various safety features, such as error codes displayed on the controller to indicate malfunctions (e.g., sensor failures, water flow restrictions, high-pressure/low-pressure issues).
  • Time Window Function: The controller allows users to set a time window for operation, which can be useful for optimizing energy consumption during off-peak hours or when hot water demand is lower.
  • Anti-Freeze Protection: The system incorporates an anti-freeze function to protect the unit in cold weather conditions.
  • Automatic Restart: In case of a power failure, the heat pump can be configured to automatically restart once power is restored.

Maintenance Features

Proper maintenance is crucial for ensuring the longevity and efficient operation of ITS Heat Pumps.

  • Regular Cleaning: Users should always ensure that the heat pump is kept clean of debris (leaves and other items) which may obstruct the inlet/outlet vents. Regularly remove items that are stuck in the vent.
  • Professional Servicing: All servicing conducted on an ITS heat pump must be carried out by an accredited ITS installer. Failure to use an accredited installer may result in the warranty being made null and void.
  • Inspection for Abnormalities: Users should be cautious and switch off the power supply and call their dealer for assistance if they detect abnormalities such as a burning smell or abnormal noise.
  • Preventing Damage: Do not insert fingers, rods, or other objects into the air inlet or outlet/fan covers. When the fan is rotating at high speed, it may cause injury as well as damage the heat pump.
  • Avoid Flammable Sprays: Never use a flammable spray such as hair spray, lacquer, paint near the unit, as it may cause a fire.
  • Corrosion Protection: The ITS 4.7kW domestic heat pump has a plastic shell which makes the installation along coastal areas a lot less prone to corrosion. The evaporator coil, however, is still exposed and so for installations along the coast or near to the ocean (20-30km radius) ITS Solar highly recommend that all heat pumps be coated with BluChem or other ITS approved anti-corrosion coating.
  • Warranty: ITS heat pumps come with a standard twelve-month warranty and a limited extended five-year warranty effective from the date of purchase. The lifespan expectancy of the heat pump is more than 10 years.
  • Holiday Mode: For periods longer than 2-3 months, it is always recommended that you set the timer to switch the unit on for a few minutes every day. This will prevent the pump from becoming stagnant.
  • Keep Shrubs Pruned: Keep shrubs pruned back at least 500mm around all sides of the heat pump to ensure proper airflow.
  • Water Quality: It is important to ensure that the water quality is suitable for the heat pump. Hard water can lead to scale buildup, which can reduce efficiency.

The manufacturer emphasizes the importance of reading the manual thoroughly before installation and use to ensure safe and efficient operation.
