Overview

This document provides comprehensive information about a Jaeger-LeCoultre timepiece, covering its functions, usage, and maintenance. The watch is a high-precision instrument, designed to operate continuously, and requires regular care to ensure its longevity and accuracy.

Function Description

The Jaeger-LeCoultre timepiece is an automatic mechanical watch, featuring a range of complications that enhance its utility beyond simple timekeeping. It includes displays for the month, day, and date, which are essential for daily organization. A moon phase indicator adds an astronomical element, tracking the lunar cycle. The watch also incorporates a chronograph function, allowing for precise timing of events. This chronograph includes a central seconds hand for measuring seconds and a minute counter that tallies up to 30 minutes, with the ability to count another 30 minutes after one revolution. A unique feature is the pulsometric scale on the internal flange, which enables the user to measure heartbeat frequency per minute, making it a useful tool for health monitoring or specific professional applications. The watch's movement is designed to be self-winding, automatically winding itself as the wearer moves, though it can also be started with a few clockwise turns of the crown.

Usage Features

Operating this Jaeger-LeCoultre watch involves several distinct actions, each controlled by specific elements on the watch case.

  • Setting the Time: To set the time, the crown must be pulled out to position 1. This action engages the "stop seconds" function, halting the seconds hand at 60, which is crucial for precise time-setting to the nearest second. The hour and minute hands are then moved forward clockwise to the desired time. Once the hour signal is received, the crown is pushed back to position O, and the watch resumes running.

  • Setting Day, Date, Month, and Moon Phase: These calendar functions are adjusted using correctors located around the watch case. A stylus, provided with the watch, is used to press these correctors.

    • Setting the Day: Corrector D, located at 10 o'clock, is pressed to advance the day disc one day forward with each press.
    • Setting the Date: Corrector B, at 4 o'clock, moves the date hand one day forward per press. For months with fewer than 31 days, this process is repeated to reach the 1st of the subsequent month.
    • Setting the Month: Corrector A, situated at 2 o'clock, advances the month disc one month forward with each press.
    • Setting the Moon Phase: Corrector C, at 8 o'clock, moves the moon phase disc one day forward per press. For accurate adjustment, the user needs to calculate the number of days elapsed since the last full moon using a calendar (provided at the end of the user manual). The moon is then centered in its aperture, and the disc is advanced according to the calculated number of elapsed days.
    • Important Note: Date, day, month, or moon phase corrections should not be performed between 10 p.m. and 2 a.m., as the automatic date-change mechanism is active during this period.
  • Operating the Chronograph: The chronograph is controlled by two push-pieces.

    • Start/Stop: Push-piece A, at 2 o'clock, starts and stops the chronograph function. The central seconds hand begins to turn, and the minute counter runs. Pressing it again stops the chronograph, allowing the elapsed time to be read.
    • Resetting: Push-piece B, at 4 o'clock, resets both the 30-minute counter and the central seconds hand. It is crucial to stop the chronograph using push-piece A before attempting to reset it. Resetting is not possible while timing is in progress, and forcing the push-piece can damage the mechanism.
    • Adding Timing Operations: The chronograph allows for cumulative timing. By pressing push-piece A again without resetting the counter, timing restarts and is added to the previous measurement.
  • Using the Pulsometer: The pulsometer is designed to measure heartbeat frequency.

    • First, reset the seconds hand by pressing push-piece B at 4 o'clock.
    • Press push-piece A at 2 o'clock once to start the chronograph and begin measuring 30 heartbeats. The seconds hand will turn, but the minute counter is not used for this measurement.
    • After 30 heartbeats, press push-piece A again to stop the chronograph.
    • The frequency of heartbeats per minute is then read from the seconds hand's position on the pulsometric scale located on the internal flange.

Maintenance Features

Proper maintenance is vital for preserving the performance and aesthetic appeal of the Jaeger-LeCoultre timepiece.

  • Regular Servicing: As a high-precision instrument, the watch requires regular servicing to ensure its good working order and durability. If significant variations in timekeeping occur, the movement may need servicing.

  • Water Resistance Checks: The watch is water-resistant up to 5 bar, indicated by a specific symbol and/or the engraving "5 bar" on the case-back, corresponding to an immersion pressure of 50 meters. To maintain this water resistance, it is essential to have it checked by an authorized Jaeger-LeCoultre retailer at least once every two years. This check is also crucial before any period of prolonged or regular immersion, and each time the watch is opened for other services.

  • Protection from Environmental Factors:

    • Temperature Changes: Avoid exposing the watch to excessively abrupt temperature changes.
    • Impacts: Protect the watch from being dropped or suffering other accidental impacts. Water resistance should be checked after any severe impact.
    • Controls in Water: Do not use the controls (push-pieces or time-setting crown) while underwater or if the watch is not yet dry after immersion.
    • Crown and Push-pieces Position: Always restore the time-setting crown and push-pieces to their normal positions after manipulation. If applicable, close any compression keys.
    • Sea Water: After use in sea water, rinse the watch with fresh water.
  • Aquatic Activities: While the watch is water-resistant, it is not a piece of diving equipment and should not be used as such. Avoid water sports that could cause impacts. Leather straps are not suitable for aquatic activities.

  • Authorized Service: All maintenance and repair work must be entrusted to an authorized Jaeger-LeCoultre retailer, a Jaeger-LeCoultre Boutique, or an authorized Jaeger-LeCoultre Service Centre. These centers are staffed by watchmakers trained at the Jaeger-LeCoultre Manufacture and are equipped with the necessary tools and parts. For complex operations requiring specialized tools, the watch may be sent to the Jaeger-LeCoultre Manufacture in Switzerland.

  • Warranty Conditions: The International Guarantee and Limited Warranty (for the United States and Canada) cover manufacturing defects for two years from the date of purchase. These guarantees are valid only if the warranty certificate is duly completed, dated, stamped, and signed by an authorized retailer or boutique. They do not cover defects resulting from accidents, mishandling, improper use, unauthorized alterations, normal wear and tear, or the use of non-designated batteries. Loss of water resistance after two years, or any water-related defect if the watch is not water-resistant, is also excluded. For quartz watches, battery life is not covered.

  • Australian Guarantee: For Australia, the guarantee provides additional rights under the Australian Consumer Law, covering defects in materials or workmanship for two years. Beyond this period, repairs may incur a service charge. This guarantee also excludes defects from improper use, alterations, or non-recommended components.

By adhering to these usage and maintenance guidelines, owners can ensure their Jaeger-LeCoultre timepiece continues to function with precision and elegance for many years.
