Unrivalled Versatility
The key to maximizing the eectiveness of the JB3 is to understand
the basic setup. The On/O switch (red LED) controls the Bass,
Treble, Gain and Attack functions. The J-Boost (blue LED) controls
the J-Boost Gain and J-Boost Bass and Treble. The Attack knob is
common to both sides of the compressor. When the J-Boost is
activated, the regular Bass, Treble and Gain are inoperable.
Among many variations, the J-Boost can work as a treble or bass
boost, or, by adjusting the J-Boost Gain louder than the regular Gain,
can create a “boost-on-boost” eect.

Overview

The JangleBox JB3 is a two-stage stompbox compressor designed for guitarists, offering extensive performance and recording versatility. It is handmade in the USA and delivers a distinctive compression edge for both professional and aspiring artists.

Function Description:

The JB3 functions as a compressor with a unique "boost-and-tone" capability, featuring a J-Boost EQ and Gain. It offers true bypass, ensuring that the guitar signal remains unaffected when the pedal is disengaged. The device includes dual outputs, allowing for flexible signal routing. A key feature is the separate, full EQ on both sides of the compressor (regular and J-Boost), providing comprehensive tone shaping. It also incorporates a mute switch for silent operation. The J-Boost side offers adjustable gain, bass, and treble controls, allowing users to fine-tune their boosted sound. An updated IC chip ensures more stable performance.

Important Technical Specifications:

The JB3 operates on a standard 9V pin negative power source or a 9V battery. When using a 9V battery, compression will decrease as the battery wears down. The J-Boost function can provide up to a 20-25 dB volume boost.

Usage Features:

The JB3's versatility stems from its dual-stage design. The On/Off switch (indicated by a red LED) controls the regular Bass, Treble, Gain, and Attack functions. The J-Boost (indicated by a blue LED) controls the J-Boost Gain, J-Boost Bass, and J-Boost Treble. The Attack knob is common to both sides of the compressor, meaning its setting affects both the regular and J-Boost compression. When the J-Boost is activated, the regular Bass, Treble, and Gain controls become inoperable.

The J-Boost can be used in various ways:

  • Treble or Bass Boost: By adjusting the J-Boost Bass and Treble controls, users can achieve a specific tonal boost.
  • "Boost-on-Boost" Effect: Setting the J-Boost Gain louder than the regular Gain creates a powerful "boost-on-boost" effect.
  • Tonal Variation and Volume Boost: The J-Boost switch serves as a second stage to create different tonal variations and/or a significant volume boost (up to 20-25 dB).
  • Integrated Activation: The J-Boost can be configured to activate simultaneously with the main On/Off switch.

Setting Up and Operating the JB3:

Experimentation is encouraged to find optimal settings for individual guitar and amp combinations.

  1. Initial EQ Adjustment: First, adjust the Bass and Treble controls on both the regular side and the J-Boost side to achieve the desired tone.
  2. Gain and Attack Settings: Turn the Gain and Attack knobs to the "12 o'clock" position.
  3. Fine-tuning Volume and Compression: Tweak the volume and compression to personal preference.
  4. J-Boost Gain Adjustment: Finally, adjust the J-Boost Gain to add or lower volume and/or create a different tone.

Understanding Controls:

  • Gain Settings: These adjust the overall volume and amount of compression.
  • Attack Setting: This adjusts the intensity of compression. The Attack knob is interactive with the Gain, meaning neither can be turned completely off independently.
  • J-Boost Gain, Bass, and Treble: These settings function only when the J-Boost is switched on (indicated by the blue light). They allow for precise control over the boosted sound, from warm bass to ultra-bright treble.

Pedal Chain Placement:

For optimal performance and to take full advantage of its true bypass, the JB3 should be placed first in the pedal chain. This means plugging the guitar directly into the JB3 before any other effects pedals.

Maintenance Features:

  • Battery Replacement: To replace the 9V battery, remove the four screws on the underside of the box.
  • Warranty: JangleBox LLC warrants the JB3 to be free from defects for one year from the date of delivery. Consumers must notify JangleBox LLC in writing of any defect claim within this period. The sole obligation under this warranty is to remedy such defects. This is a limited warranty and excludes all other express or implied warranties, including merchantability and fitness for a particular purpose. JangleBox LLC is not liable for consequential, exemplary, or incidental damages resulting from the use of the JB3.
