Do you have a question about the Jays m-Six Wireless and is the answer not in the manual?

Overview

The JAYS m-Six Wireless are a pair of earphones designed for motion activities, including running, walking, cycling, climbing, commuting, and general everyday use, as well as sports. Unlike many sport earphones, they do not include sensors or activity tracking features. Instead, their core purpose is to provide a comfortable and high-performing audio experience that makes you forget you're wearing earphones.

Design and Fit:

The m-Six Wireless are engineered for a secure and well-fitting experience inside any ear. The design aims to minimize irritation from dangling remotes or battery boxes, often found in other wireless earphones. Inspired by in-ear monitors used by on-stage performing artists, the inside surface of the earphones is shaped to an impression of a "typical" ear, optimizing the internal earphone volume and ensuring a secure fit.

The cable is designed to essentially disappear, passing through a flexible ear hook behind the ear. This hook allows the cable to be tucked away and further secures the earphone's fit. An adjustable cable neck tie provides users with the ability to customize the tightness and position of the cable behind the neck for optimal personal comfort. The sound tube follows the "typical" median ear canal angle, both horizontally and vertically, based on ear anatomy studies, to fit most people as effectively as possible.

The m-Six Wireless differentiate themselves from typical sport earphones, which often feature pulse-tracking sensors, activity-data apps, rugged surfaces, bulky sizes, and bright colors. Instead, JAYS focused on basic performance: RF performance, secure fit, good sound, and ease of use. The goal is to blur the lines between sport and lifestyle earphones, eliminating the sensation of any hardware between the user and their music.

The exterior design is largely derived from the inside ear impression, but it also features a "form-in-form" aesthetic, allowing for future differentiation with various colors and textures. The decal plate on the right earphone, featuring the JAYS logo, doubles as a universal single-button control for powering the earphones on/off and other functions.

Color and Material:

The chosen color palette for the m-Six Wireless is dustier and down-saturated, setting them apart from many other sport earphones. This offers users alternative choices, and the texture maintains JAYS' signature matte finish. The ear hooks are flexible and soft, yet they are designed to retain their original shape. The cable tie is a single-piece component made of TPE, ensuring a balanced friction slide and lock mechanism.

Control Button:

The m-Six Wireless features a single, integrated control button on the right earphone. This button is designed to be very small and light (1.0N) to prevent discomfort when pressed against the ear. The TPE material of the button is balanced in hardness to match the switch, providing a good press feel. The switch is built to withstand over 300,000 press cycles.

The control button offers a range of functionalities:

  • On/Off: Press for 2 seconds.
  • Play/Pause: Single click.
  • Next song: Double click.
  • Previous song: Triple click.
  • Answer/end call: Single click.
  • Reject call: Press for 2 seconds.
  • Hold current call: Press for 2 seconds.
  • Answer 2nd call A: Single click (ends current call).
  • Answer 2nd call B: Press for 2 seconds (puts current call on hold).
  • Toggle calls: Press for 2 seconds (puts current on hold).
  • Voice assistant: Double click and hold for 2 seconds.
  • Force re-connect: Single click (if Bluetooth connection is lost).
  • Force pair mode: Press for 4 seconds from the OFF state.
  • Clear pair list: Press for 10 seconds from the OFF state.

Extra Functions:

The m-Six Wireless includes several extra functions to enhance usability:

  • Multipoint: This feature allows the m-Six to pair and connect to two devices simultaneously. While it can only play music from one device at a time, it will still route calls from your phone even if you are, for example, connected to your MacBook and listening to music from it. To connect a second device using Multipoint, the second device must have been previously paired with the m-Six. While the m-Six is connected to the first device, locate "m-Six Wireless" in the previously paired Bluetooth device list on your second device and connect.
  • Force Pair Mode: This mode is useful if users wish to connect the m-Six to a second device without needing to switch off Bluetooth on the first connected device.
  • Clear Pair List: This function can be used to troubleshoot and resolve pairing or connecting problems.
  • Noise Cancellation: The m-Six employs two microphones and a noise cancellation algorithm. One microphone captures the user's voice, while the other picks up ambient environmental noise. The system then deducts the environmental noise from the voice microphone's input to filter and improve the clarity of call speech sound.

Electronics:

The electronics are designed to be as compact as possible, fitting entirely within the right earphone. This allows the left earphone to house a larger battery. Since the right side also contains the Bluetooth antenna, the PCB layout is optimized for RF performance. The circuit board and antenna are strategically placed to maximize the distance between them, thereby avoiding interference.

Charging:

Charging is facilitated by a custom pogo pin charging system, as a micro-USB port would be too large to fit within the earphone's compact design. A custom magnet on the right side housing connects to a corresponding magnet on the charging cable, ensuring a secure and easy connection.

Speakers:

The m-Six Wireless utilizes the same 6mm dynamic speakers found in the a-Six model, but with a slightly different tuning adapted to the m-Six's unique cavity design.

Microphones:

The earphones feature two identical bottom port MEMS microphones, which are among the smallest available on the market. These microphones offer excellent audio performance and support the cVc (Clear Voice Capture) feature for enhanced call quality.

Battery:

The m-Six Wireless uses Varta lithium coin cells, chosen for their high power-to-size ratio, which is crucial for achieving sufficient playtime while maintaining excellent ergonomics, even for users with small ears. The earphones are equipped with a 14mm (85mAh) cell, providing approximately 5 hours of playtime at "regular" volume on an iPhone. Varta coincells are also known for their safety, featuring a venting design to handle overpressure and a patented "killswitch" that will disable the cell if venting is insufficient. The m-Six's design incorporates this safety feature, providing ample space for the cell to expand if necessary.

Affordability:

The design choice of having a cable behind the ear, rather than being a True Wireless Stereo (TWS) device, offers several advantages:

  • Improved RF Performance: Compared to TWS earphones, where both earbuds need to communicate with the phone and with each other (slave earphone side), the m-Six's design can offer improved RF performance.
  • Affordability: By integrating components and avoiding the duplication required for TWS designs, the m-Six can maintain high-quality components while remaining affordable.

This design approach means that the m-Six, priced at 99 USD, offers a similar sense of freedom to TWS earphones but can compare in terms of components and quality to TWS models typically priced between 159-179 USD, making the m-Six a very affordable option.
