ALWAYS CHECK THE BRAKES BEFORE RIDING:

Check that the brake pads are aligned correctly. If they are not, loosen pads and place into correct position.
Check that the brake pads are centered correctly. To do this, check that there is even gap between the rim, fork and brake pads.
