Overview

This document provides a comprehensive guide for the Owlhealth DET-1015 Infrared Ear Thermometer, designed for accurate core body temperature measurement.

Function Description

The DET-1015 Infrared Ear Thermometer is specifically designed for safe use in the eardrum. It measures core body temperature, which is the temperature of a body's vital organs, by detecting the intensity of infrared light emitted from the ear canal. The device converts the measured heat into a temperature reading displayed on the LCD. The eardrum is an excellent site for temperature measurement because it is in the cranial cavity and shares blood supply with the hypothalamus, reflecting body temperature changes sooner than other sites. The thermometer provides an "oral equivalent" temperature reading.

Usage Features

The DET-1015 offers several user-friendly features for accurate and convenient temperature measurement:

  • Real-Time Clock Setting: Upon first use, users can set the time format (AM/PM or 24-hour), hour, minute, year, month, and date. This ensures that temperature readings are recorded with accurate timestamps.
  • Probe Protection Cover: The thermometer must be used with a probe protection cover. If not installed, the display will show "CAP". Using a new and clean probe cover for each measurement is recommended to reduce the risk of cross-contamination.
  • Measurement Process:
    1. Ensure the probe protective cover is correctly installed.
    2. Insert the probe along the ear canal as deep as possible.
    3. Press the Test BUTTON once to start the measurement. A long beep will sound after approximately 1 second, signaling the end of the process, and results will be displayed on the LCD screen.
    4. The thermometer is ready for another test after an ear mark appears on the LCD. A 20-second waiting period between tests is recommended to avoid excessive cooling of the skin.
  • Automatic Shut-off: The thermometer automatically turns off after 60 seconds of inactivity to prolong battery life. Users can also manually turn it off by pressing the "Setting" button.
  • Backlight Feature:
    • Green Backlight: Displays for 3 seconds with a happy face when the unit is ready for measurement and a reading below 37.3°C (99.1°F) is completed.
    • Yellow Backlight: Displays for 3 seconds with a happy face when a reading below 37.8°C (100.0°F) is completed.
    • Red Backlight: Displays for 3 seconds with a bad face when a reading equal to or higher than 37.8°C (100.0°F) is completed.
  • Memory Mode:
    • Accessible by pressing and holding the "Setting" button for three seconds after the thermometer is on or a test is completed. "MEM" will appear on the display.
    • Automatically stores the last 30 temperature readings, including date/time and mode icon.
    • Users can scroll through past readings (1-30, where 1 is the most recent) by pressing the "Setting" button.
    • In memory mode, the "Test" button can still be used to take new measurements.
  • Temperature Taking Tips:
    • Always take temperature in the same ear as readings may differ between ears.
    • Ensure the ear is free from obstructions or excess earwax.
    • Avoid external factors like covered ears, extreme temperatures, or recent swimming/bathing. Wait 20 minutes after such situations.
    • Remove hearing aids or ear plugs and wait 20 minutes before measuring.
    • Proper probe insertion: pull the ear up for infants under age 1, and pull the ear back for individuals over age 1, ensuring the sensor faces the eardrum.
    • Allow the thermometer to acclimate to the testing location for approximately 30 minutes if stored in a different environment.

Maintenance Features

  • Probe Window Cleaning: Do not touch the probe window. Use a cotton swab and rubbing alcohol to clean the sensor window.
  • General Cleaning:
    • Use a soft, dry cloth to clean the thermometer display and exterior.
    • Do not put the thermometer into water.
    • Store the thermometer and probe cover in a dry location, free from dust and contamination, and away from direct sunlight.
    • Periodically clean the device following use to prevent patient cross-infection.
    • Use a soft cloth slightly moistened with a 75% isopropyl alcohol solution to wipe the thermometer and probe. Do not use abrasive cleaners.
    • Ensure children do not use the instrument unsupervised; small parts could be swallowed.
    • Do not remove or modify the equipment without permission.
    • Put the thermometer back into the original packaging after using.
  • Battery Replacement:
    1. The battery symbol appears in the bottom of the LCD display when batteries are low.
    2. Slide battery cover down.
    3. Remove battery and install 2 new AA alkaline batteries.
    4. Slide battery cover back on.
  • Calibration: The thermometer is initially calibrated at the time of manufacture. Periodic recalibration is not required; however, if accuracy is in question, send the device to the dealer or manufacturer. The manufacturer recommends checking calibration every two years to ensure accurate readings.
  • Warranty and Service: The thermometer is warranted for one year from the date of delivery against defects in material and workmanship under normal use and service. This warranty does not cover batteries, probe window damage, or damage from misuse, negligence, or accident. The warranty is void if the thermometer is operated with non-brand probe covers. For service during or after the warranty period, contact the manufacturer. Repackage the thermometer carefully in its original packaging, include the original sales slip, a note describing the problem, and your return address.
