Usage Features:

Unpacking and Initial Inspection:

Upon receiving the MUB-1, users should thoroughly inspect the product for any damage that may have occurred during transit. Claims for shipping damage are the responsibility of the user. All parts should be checked against the parts list for completeness and condition.

General Safety Information:

  • CAUTION: Always follow proper operating procedures as defined in the manual to prevent severe personal injury.
  • Apparel: Wear proper apparel, avoiding loose clothing, gloves, neckties, rings, bracelets, or other jewelry that could get caught in moving parts. Protective hair covering is recommended for long hair. Safety shoes with non-slip soles are also advised.
  • Eye Protection: Wear safety glasses complying with United States ANSI Z87.1. Everyday glasses are not sufficient as they only have impact-resistant lenses, not safety lenses.
  • Alertness: Operate tools only when alert and thinking clearly. Avoid operation when tired, intoxicated, or under the influence of medications causing drowsiness.
  • Work Area: Maintain a clean and well-lit work area to prevent accidents.
  • Children and Visitors: Keep children out of the workplace and visitors at a safe distance.
  • Storage: When not in use, store tools in a dry, secure place out of reach of children. Inspect tools before reuse.
  • Assembly: Assemble only according to instructions to avoid hazards.
  • Labels: Maintain product labels and nameplates as they carry important safety information.
  • Common Sense: The manual emphasizes that common sense and caution are crucial factors that cannot be built into the product but must be exercised by the operator.

Operating Procedures:

The Universal Bender must be clamped to a solid workbench or affixed in the T-slot of a stable machine tool for safe and effective operation.

To Make Eyes and Centered Eyes:

  1. Attach the Handle (#17) to the Working Plate (#2) using the appropriate shaft (1/2" Shaft #10, 1/4" Shaft #11, or 3/16" Shaft #12) and optionally the 1" Circle (#14), depending on the desired bend. Secure the shaft with the Hex Head Screw (#22). The handle should be positioned to the user's right and as close as possible to the bender's body, opposite the Vise Control Knob (#13).
  2. Place the material to be bent between the selected shaft and the Vise (#6), then clamp it down.
  3. Insert the Short Shaft (#9) into one of the handle's holes, choosing the hole closest to the bender that the material allows.
  4. Hold the material lightly with your thumb to ensure parallel results, if desired.
  5. Pull the handle clockwise for a 1/4 turn to achieve a 90-degree bend. For repetitive bends, the Stop Pin (#16) can be inserted into the appropriate hole, typically the hole at the front of the bender (furthest from the Vise Control Knob), second from the right.
  6. Loosen the vise and reposition the material so the bend is opposite the handle in its starting position. The straight part of the material should extend towards the handle, with a slight amount of the bend clamped when the vise is tightened.
  7. Re-clamp the material and continue the process until the material completes one full revolution. A slight over-bending on the final step is necessary to compensate for spring back.
  8. For heavy gauge wire, the Sharp Angle Plate (#15) may be necessary to prevent slipping. It should be placed on its side with the angle portion facing up, one side of the hole facing the vise, and the other facing the shaft being used.
  9. To center the eye, position the handle so the material is on the opposite side of the handle, allowing counterclockwise movement.
  10. Re-clamp the material with the straight section at right angles to the vise.
  11. Move the handle counterclockwise until it meets the bender.

Bending Coils and Loops:

  1. Follow the first seven steps for making eyes.
  2. For loops and coils, lift the material slightly on the third bend to allow it to rise above the already bent material.
  3. For coils, a spacer can be used for repetitive bends to ensure even and regular spacing between loops.

To Make "S" Shapes:

  1. Use the 1" Circle (#14) with the 1/2" Shaft (#10) on the body, as described in step 1 for "Eyes and Centered Eyes."
  2. Place the Sharp Angle Plate (#15) onto the short shaft on the handle.
  3. Use a short section of stock, approximately 2-3/4" to 3" in length. Clamp the stock in the vise so that the edge of the material is even with the edge of the circle.
  4. Make a complete clockwise bend.
  5. Leaving the handle in the leftmost position, move the material so the first loop is on the angled side of the vise's jaw, and the edge of the stock is even with the edge of the circle.
  6. Make a complete counterclockwise bend.

Using the Gauge:

  1. The Gauge (#23) is used for bending multiple pieces at precisely the same length.
  2. Insert the gauge into the side of the bender so its end is the exact desired distance from the bender for the length. Tighten the Gauge Clamp (#24).
  3. The gauge and stop pin can be used together to make squares, significantly enhancing final results.

Maintenance Features:

The manual includes a "SERVICE RECORD" section where users can log the date, maintenance performed, and any repair components required. This suggests that regular maintenance is expected to ensure the longevity and proper functioning of the device. Although specific maintenance procedures are not detailed in the provided excerpts, the inclusion of this record implies the need for routine care and potential part replacement over time. Users are also advised to inspect tools prior to storage and before reuse, indicating a general maintenance practice.
