Overview

This document provides an operating manual for the Kärcher HD 650 and HD 651 high-pressure cleaners, designed for both professional and domestic use in the USA and Canada. The manual covers essential information regarding the unit's parts, safety features, initial setup, operation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and technical specifications.

Function Description:

The Kärcher HD 650 and HD 651 are high-pressure cleaners primarily used for cleaning with a high-pressure jet, with or without detergent. They are suitable for a variety of tasks, including cleaning machines, vehicles, buildings, tools, facades, terraces, and gardening equipment. For stubborn dirt, a dirt blaster accessory is recommended. The units are equipped with a relief valve and pressure switch, which regulate water flow and automatically switch the pump off when the lever is released, and on when retracted. This system is designed to prevent rupture and injury by ensuring components are rated for the operating pressure.

Important Technical Specifications:

The HD 650 and HD 651 models come in different versions for CDN (Canada) and USA, with varying voltage and pressure ratings.

  • Mains Connection:
    • Voltage: 240V (HD 650 CDN/USA), 120V (HD 651 CDN), 110V (HD 651 USA)
    • Type of current: 1~60 Hz
    • Connected load: 4.5 HP (HD 650), 2.8 HP (HD 651)

    • Oil quantity, pump: 0.4 l
    • Oil type, pump: motor oil 15W40

Usage Features:

The cleaner is designed for ease of use with several operational modes:

  • Unpacking and Assembly: Users are instructed to check for transit damage, dispose of packaging responsibly, and then mount the handle, handgun support, nozzle, and spray lance.
  • Electrical Connection: Requires matching the unit's voltage to the supply and using an adequate extension cable.
  • Water Connection/Suction Feed: Can be connected to a water main (with a non-return valve for public drinking water supply) or draw water from an open container using a suction hose with a filter.
  • Venting: Before first use, the unit must be vented by unscrewing the nozzle and running the unit until water exits without air bubbles.
  • Operating with High Pressure: The motor starts when the lever (2) is retracted. Users can adjust operating pressure and flow rate using the pressure/flow control (13) and read the pressure on the handgun's gauge.
  • Selecting Spray Type: The handgun must be closed to rotate the nozzle housing (22) and select between:
    • High-pressure pencil jet for stubborn grime.
    • Low-pressure fan jet for detergent application or light cleaning.
    • High-pressure fan jet for dirt accumulation over a large surface.
  • Operating with Detergent: Fill the detergent reservoir (10), set the nozzle to the detergent symbol, and adjust the detergent metering valve (8). Kärcher-approved detergents are recommended. After use, rinse the cleaner clear of detergent.
  • Interrupting/Switching Off: Releasing the lever (2) switches the cleaner off. To fully switch off, set the unit switch (17) to "0", pull out the power plug, close the water inlet, and relieve pressure by retracting the lever.
  • Transport and Storage: Transport by pulling it along by the handle (21) or lifting it for steps. Empty the detergent reservoir before horizontal transport. Store the handgun in its support (6), reel in the high-pressure hose (5) on the hose rest (18), and coil the connecting cable on the cable/hose rest (20).
  • Protection from Sub-Zero Temperatures: Store the cleaner in a heated room or empty it thoroughly. For longer periods, pumping antifreeze through the cleaner is recommended to prevent freezing and corrosion.

Maintenance Features:

Regular maintenance is crucial for the cleaner's longevity and safe operation.

  • Safety Precautions: Always pull out the power plug before any care or maintenance work. Dispose of waste oil at authorized collection points.
  • Safety Inspection/Maintenance Contract: Kärcher recommends arranging regular safety inspections or a maintenance contract with a dealer.
  • Before Each Operation:
    • Check the connecting cable for damage and have it replaced by authorized personnel if necessary.
    • Check the high-pressure hose for damage (risk of explosion) and replace it if necessary.
    • Check the cleaner (pump) for leaks; three drops per minute are allowable, but more serious leaks require Customer Service.
  • Weekly Maintenance:
    • Check the oil level in the oil reservoir (16). If the oil is milky (water in oil), contact Customer Service immediately.
    • Clean the strainer at the water outlet.
    • Clean the filter at the detergent suction hose.
  • Annually or After 500 Operating Hours:
    • Change the oil. This involves undoing fastening screws (12), removing the unit cover, removing the oil reservoir cover, laying the cleaner on its side to drain oil into a suitable container, and then slowly refilling with fresh motor oil 15W40 (0.4 l).
