Overview

The Kawasaki 1400GTR ABS 2011 is a transcontinental supersport motorcycle designed for long-distance touring with a focus on performance and rider support. It builds upon its predecessor by incorporating the latest touring features and rider support technology, offering both awesome supersport performance and comfortable long-distance touring potential.

Function Description:

The 1400GTR ABS is powered by a Ninja ZX-14 based engine, tuned for more low-end torque and mid-range power. It features Variable Valve Timing (VVT), a first in its class, which delivers high torque at low to medium engine speeds and ample power at higher engine speeds. The VVT unit, mounted on the intake camshaft, advances or retards camshaft timing as engine demand changes. Gear-driven dual secondary balancers cut vibration, minimizing engine wear, noise, and rider fatigue.

The fuel system utilizes electronic fuel injection for excellent power, fuel economy, low exhaust emissions, smooth driveability, and easy starting. Compared to the Ninja ZX-14, the throttle valve diameters are reduced for more linear low and mid-range throttle response and driveability. Smaller diameter throttle bodies increase intake velocity, resulting in crisp throttle response from low to high engine speeds. High atomizing injectors maximize combustion efficiency and minimize emissions. Dual throttle valves further improve driveability, with sub-throttle valves controlled by the ECU for precise response. A ram air induction system takes cooler, high-pressure air from the front cowling and pushes it through the air cleaner into the engine for maximum power output. To minimize emissions, a honeycomb catalyser is used in the exhaust system.

The motorcycle is equipped with a 6-speed transmission, with sixth gear acting as an overdrive for reduced engine speed during cruising, enhancing comfort and fuel consumption. A hydraulic-operated clutch with a radial-mounted master cylinder provides smooth clutch operation and a high-class appearance. An adjustable back-torque limiter "slipper" clutch helps prevent rear wheel hop during down-shifting.

For advanced rider support, the 1400GTR features KTRC (Kawasaki Traction Control), Kawasaki's first traction control system. This system reduces engine output when wheel spin is detected, allowing the rear tire to regain grip. It enables smooth traversal of rough roads and maintains grip on slippery surfaces. The system looks for differences in front and rear wheel speed, and when rear wheel spin is detected, engine output is controlled to allow the rear wheel to regain grip. KTRC effectively helps riders negotiate short slippery patches (like train tracks or manhole covers) and extended stretches of bad road (dirt, gravel, cobblestone, grass). Wheel spin is also limited when starting on a slippery surface. Additionally, by interpreting slower front wheel speed as rear wheel spin, the system prevents wheelies. However, it does not engage if the rear wheel locks up under engine braking, nor is it designed to prevent lateral slides. KTRC uses 3-way control, governing ignition timing, fuel delivery, and airflow via the sub-throttles for smooth operation.

The 2nd Generation K-ACT (Kawasaki Advanced Coactive-braking Technology) ABS complements rider active brake control with supplementary brake force enhancement for confident, highly effective braking. K-ACT ABS enables controlled, balanced braking by ensuring ideal brake force distribution to maximize braking efficiency. This 2nd generation system uses a smaller, lighter K-ACT ABS unit and a higher-spec brake ECU for smoother operation. Rider actuation of the front brake lever and/or rear brake pedal causes brake fluid to act directly on caliper pistons. Pressure sensors detect the applied braking force, and the brake ECU determines the necessary corresponding brake force for maximum braking efficiency, operating fluid pumps to increase pressure to the front right caliper (based on rear pedal application) and/or rear caliper (based on front lever application). Two more pressure sensors provide feedback to the brake ECU. K-ACT ABS is always ON, but its settings are sportier than those on the Vulcan 1700 Voyager ABS. Riders can choose between two modes: Standard Mode (reduced K-ACT effect, prioritizing rider control) and High Combined Mode (enhanced K-ACT effect, ideal for touring/tandem/highway use). The K-ACT effect for both modes is the same after a given pedal stroke. K-ACT ABS also incorporates an anti-lock braking function to prevent wheels from locking up during hard braking in a straight line. The coactive function does not engage when braking is initiated at speeds below 20 km/h, and the ABS function is disengaged at speeds below 6 km/h.

The motorcycle features a Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) as standard equipment, a first for a motorcycle. This system allows the rider to monitor tire pressure while underway, displaying a low pressure warning if the pressure falls below a pre-defined limit. It also accounts for temperature changes and recalculates values for 20°C to prevent false warnings as tires warm up.

Usage Features:

The 1400GTR ABS offers a high level of comfort and touring potential. It has a large, electrically adjustable windscreen with new programmable preset positions. The windscreen is 70 mm taller and wider at the top, allowing air to flow smoothly around the rider's helmet and reducing wind striking the rider's shoulders and upper arms. Riders can adjust the screen steplessly using a button on the left grip or choose from four preset positions: lowest, 1/2, 3/4, and top. The windscreen automatically returns to the selected preset position when power is turned back on, thanks to a memory function. Passages from windscreen slits direct air through the inner fairing to vents next to the instrument panel, alleviating lower pressure in the cockpit area and preventing turbulence around the rider's head.

High mirrors are positioned 40 mm higher for increased rear visibility. Stepless adjustable hand grip warmers are fitted standard, with the switch located close to the rider for easy access. The stylish bodywork provides great comfort, and the design contributes to the bike's high-speed stability. The side and center cowling were redesigned to reduce heat hitting the rider.

The motorcycle features a lockable storage case, relocated from the top of the tank to the left side, allowing access even when a tank bag is being used. It has a volume of 0.9 liters and a deeper shape for small items like sunglasses, mobile phones, and audio players. An electromagnetic lock prevents unauthorized entry when the main key is OFF, and the case can be accessed by a button when power is ON. It also locks automatically at speeds over 40 km/h and releases under 3 km/h. Hooks at the front of the tank facilitate securing a tank bag.

Large-volume panniers are integrally designed to complement the GTR's styling. They are easy to detach, water-resistant, and can hold a full-face helmet. The maximum capacity for each pannier is 10 kg. A lightweight rear rack (10 kg maximum capacity) is fitted as standard equipment.

The touring-ready cockpit includes an analogue speedometer and tachometer with black faces for easy readability. A multi-function LCD digital display includes a fuel gauge, trip computer showing consumption and cruising range, odometer, twin trip meters, gear position indicator, coolant temperature gauge, tire pressure and battery voltage readings, and a clock. A handy outside air temperature indicator is also on the dash. A CAN (Controller Area Network) interface between the meter and the ECU uses fewer wires while allowing greater information exchange. An all-purpose 70W 12-volt DC socket makes it easy to use electrical accessories.

The GTR's ergonomics provide a spacious and comfortable riding position, reducing fatigue during long rides and making it easy for the rider to shift weight. Compared to the ZX-14, the grips are located 96 mm further back and 100 mm higher, providing a more relaxed and upright riding position. The fuel tank extends beneath the seat, contributing to mass centralization and a slim, natural, comfortable riding position. The front seat is firm with thick cushion material for excellent comfort during long-distance tours. The passenger section is specially shaped and cushioned for comfortable tandem riding. The seat height is 15 mm higher than the ZX-14 to ensure a deep lean angle while offering improved comfort (less knee bend). The tandem seat is stepped to allow the passenger better forward vision and to feel closer to the rider. The footpegs are lower and further forward than on the ZX-14, creating a more relaxed riding posture for both rider and passenger.

The KIPASS (Kawasaki's Intelligent Proximity Activation Start System) is a master key system that allows remote activation of the bike's main switch, enhancing rider convenience. An immobilizer function is incorporated into the ignition system for added security. Riders receive one key fob and a small card-type key for emergency/backup use. The card-type key includes an immobilizer function (but no remote activation) and is highly portable. The main key knob can be removed for opening the filler cap, seat, and pannier locks. The main fob also contains a key to operate the locks if the key knob is lost or damaged. This electronic authorization start system is an approved security device by Kawasaki Insurances.

Maintenance Features:

The Economical Riding Indicator lets the rider know when fuel consumption is favorable. The Fuel Economy Assistance Mode is a selectable mode that switches to a leaner fuel map, prioritizing fuel efficiency. This mode can be turned on and off by the rider, switching the ECU to a leaner fuel map that prioritizes fuel economy over driveability. Ignition timing and fuel injection are set for maximum fuel efficiency. When on, the indicator appears on the LCD screen. For both the Economical Riding Indicator and Fuel Economy Assistance Mode to be effective, the rider must ride gently: less than 6,000 rpm, less than 30% throttle, and under 160 km/h, in any gear.

The sturdy 43 mm inverted front fork is adjustable for rebound damping and preload. A higher oil level for the front fork offers sharper handling. The Tetra-Lever rear suspension system is supported at four points on the left and right side and mounts to Kawasaki's unique Uni-Trak suspension system. This system almost completely eliminates the up/down movement associated with shaft drives during acceleration and deceleration, resulting in a natural ride feel similar to chain drive. The parallel link swingarm houses the shaft drive, reducing weight. The rear suspension has rebound damping adjustability and is fully adjustable for preload via a remote hydraulic adjuster, negating the need for additional tools. Fine-tuned rear suspension settings, including a slightly softer spring and slightly greater preload, contribute to sharper handling.

The aluminum monocoque frame is an advanced version of those used on the Ninja ZX-12R and Ninja ZX-14. The front brake uses a radial pump master cylinder and radial-mount, opposed 4-piston calipers gripping 310 mm semi-floating petal discs for outstanding braking performance. The rear brake is a 20 mm larger diameter rear disc than the ZX-14, with an opposed 2-piston caliper on the rear petal disc enhancing rear braking performance. The rear brake lever pedal's pad is larger for ease of operation.
