Kenko Sky Memo
Instructions
The Kenko Sky Memo (‘R’ version) is a single-
axis tracking system intended to be used in
wide-angle astrophotographic applications. In
the standard configuration, the system includes
a dual-camera tracking arm, illuminated polar
finder, and remote control paddle for guiding
use. All components included with the basic
tracker are pictured at right. An optional
compact tripod with fine attitude and azimuth
adjustments, or a counterweight bar with
various weights are also available.
Initial Preparation
The Kenko Sky Memo requires 4 C-cells to
be installed in the supplied battery holder,
which is then plugged into the side of the
tracker. Alkaline or carbon-zinc cells are
recommended, but NiCd rechargeable cells
may be used although the power light on the
side of the tracker may not light. If you plan
to photograph in cold weather, you should
prepare an insulated enclosure for the
battery pack to keep it warm enough to
function. The operating time for most
batteries are dramatically reduced below
freezing.
Because the Kenko Sky Memo can be
operated in either the northern or southern
hemisphere, the switch labeled “Direction
must be set properly to the “N” or “S”
position respectively.
The polar finder illuminator should also be
inserted into the rear of the polar finder and
plugged into the illuminator power socket on
the tracker control panel.

What to do if the image is out of focus with Kenko Sky Memo?
    • D
      Dustin RiceAug 5, 2025
If your images are out of focus when using your Kenko GPS, there are a few things to check. First, ensure the focus ring isn't moving during exposure; using tape to secure it can help. In high temperature and humidity, the film might move against the pressure plate, so shortening exposure times may resolve this. You can also try using dry air purge for the camera or changing to a different film.

How to improve reticle pattern visibility on Kenko GPS?
    • F
      Frank DurhamAug 12, 2025
If you're having trouble seeing the reticle pattern clearly on your Kenko GPS, it could be due to a polar scope that is not focused properly. Try adjusting the focus by turning the eyepiece. Alternatively, the illumination might be too low; in that case, adjust the illumination by turning the VOL control.

How to fix a Kenko GPS tripod knob that keeps turning?
    • J
      Jeffrey MitchellAug 20, 2025
If the adjustment knob on your Kenko tripod keeps turning without adjusting the position, the setscrew holding the knob may have loosened. To fix this, screw the knob back onto the adjustment shaft (it is a left-handed thread) until it reaches the end of travel, and then tighten the setscrew.

Why are stars trailed when using Kenko GPS?
    • K
      Kenneth BakerOct 28, 2025
There are several potential causes for star trailing when using the Kenko GPS. It could be due to clamps not being locked firmly—ensure you tighten them and recheck before each exposure. Incorrect polar alignment can also cause this, so verify polar alignment before each shot. Equipment flexure, especially with longer and heavier telephoto lenses, can be a factor; consider using a lens bracket to improve balance. Atmospheric refraction, low battery power, or movement of the camera or lens can also contribute to star trails. In the case of low battery power, make sure the motor is working correctly, use fresh batteries, and keep batteries warm on cold nights. Check equipment position before each shot to ensure tracker clearance, noting that the arm moves 15 degrees per hour. A guide scope c...
