Overview

This document provides instructions for the Kenwood Slow Cooker, model CP657. It covers safety guidelines, usage instructions, recipes, and care and cleaning information.

Function Description

The Kenwood Slow Cooker CP657 is designed to cook food slowly over several hours, allowing for tender and flavourful results. It features a base unit with a heating element, a removable cooking pot, and a lid. The appliance offers three cooking settings: Low, High, and Auto.

The Low setting is ideal for gradually cooking food over approximately 8 hours, suitable for more delicate dishes like baked apples or poached fruit. The High setting speeds up the cooking process, with typical cooking times ranging from 3 to 5 hours. The Auto function is designed to have food ready in 8-10 hours. When selected, the slow cooker initially cooks on High power until the food reaches the desired cooking temperature, then automatically switches to Low power to maintain a constant low cooking temperature.

The slow cooker is intended for domestic use and is suitable for preparing a variety of dishes, including stews, casseroles, soups, and even desserts. It is particularly useful for preparing meals with minimal supervision, as it cooks food gently and consistently.

Usage Features

Before First Use: Before using the slow cooker for the first time, all removable parts (lid and cooking pot) should be washed according to the cleaning instructions. Ensure that your electricity supply matches the specifications on the underside of the appliance. The appliance must be earthed.

Operating the Slow Cooker:

  1. Preparation: Follow your chosen recipe and place all ingredients into the cooking pot. It is recommended to use ingredients at room temperature, though meat and fish should not be left out of the refrigerator longer than necessary. Root vegetables should be cut into small pieces as they take longer to cook than meat. Cutting all ingredients into even-sized pieces promotes even cooking. Browning meat and sautéing vegetables in a separate pan beforehand can enhance flavour and appearance, though it is not essential.
  2. Assembly: Place the cooking pot into the base unit, then position the lid securely.
  3. Setting: Select either the High, Low, or Auto setting using the control knob. The power-on indicator light will illuminate.
  4. Cooking: Allow the food to cook for the desired time based on the recipe and chosen setting. Avoid lifting the lid more than necessary during cooking, as this causes heat loss and liquid evaporation, potentially extending cooking times. If the lid is frequently removed, an extra 20-30 minutes of cooking time may be needed.
  5. Completion: After cooking, switch off and unplug the slow cooker.

Recipe Adaptation Tips: When adapting conventional recipes for the slow cooker, it may be necessary to reduce the amount of liquid, as liquid does not evaporate as quickly in slow cooking. However, a certain amount of liquid is essential for heat transfer. Never fill the slow cooker more than two-thirds full. Milk products, such as cream, sour cream, and yoghurt, should be added towards the end of cooking to prevent curdling. Frozen vegetables like peas should be thawed and added during the last half hour of cooking to retain colour, texture, and temperature. For best results, ingredients should be covered in liquid. Excess fat should be trimmed from meat. Multiple dishes can be cooked simultaneously in heat-proof dishes, covered with foil, and placed in hot water within the cooking pot. When cooking whole joints, ensure they fit comfortably and always add liquid, turning them halfway through the cooking process. Using hot stock can speed up cooking. To thicken gravy, mix cornflour with cold water to form a paste and add it to the cooking pot towards the end of cooking, cooking until bubbling and thickened.

Food Safety:

  • Cook meat (including poultry), fish, and seafood thoroughly. Never cook them from frozen.
  • Do not reheat food in the slow cooker.
  • Always ensure food is piping hot before eating.
  • Never partially cook meat and poultry and then refrigerate for subsequent cooking.
  • Follow specific cooking advice for ingredients like dried beans. For example, dried red kidney beans must be soaked overnight and then fast-boiled for at least 10 minutes in fresh water to destroy toxins before being added to the slow cooker.

Maintenance Features

Care and Cleaning: Always switch off, unplug, and allow the appliance to cool completely before cleaning.

  • Base Unit: Wipe the outside of the base unit with a damp cloth and then dry thoroughly. Never immerse the base unit in water or any other liquid, as this could cause an electric shock. Keep the controls clean and dry.
  • Lid and Cooking Pot: These parts can be washed in warm, soapy water, rinsed, and then dried thoroughly. For stubborn food residue, a soft-bristled brush can be used. Both the cooking pot and lid are dishwasher-safe.
  • General Maintenance: Never use a damaged slow cooker. If the plug or cord is damaged, it must be replaced by Kenwood or an authorised Kenwood repairer to avoid hazards. After several months of use, the glaze on the cooking pot may develop crackles; this is normal for glazed stoneware and does not affect the appliance's efficiency.

Safety Precautions:

  • This appliance produces steam, which can cause burns. Exercise caution when removing the lid.
  • Accessible surfaces become hot during use. Always use the handles and wear protective gloves if necessary.
  • The heating element surface and cooking pot retain residual heat after use.
  • Never use the slow cooker without adding water, as this can damage the appliance.
  • Never place the appliance or its components on a cooker or in an oven.
  • Use the appliance only on a flat, heat-resistant surface.
  • Do not move the unit while it is in operation or still hot.
  • This appliance is not intended to be operated by an external timer or separate remote-control system.
  • Do not use the slow cooker near or below curtains or other combustible materials.
  • Do not use the appliance outdoors.
  • Misuse of the appliance can result in injury.
  • Children aged 8 years and above can use, clean, and perform user maintenance if supervised by a responsible person and instructed on safe use, understanding the hazards.
  • Persons with reduced physical, sensory, or mental capabilities, or lack of knowledge, must be supervised or instructed on safe use and aware of hazards.
  • Children must not play with the appliance. The appliance and cord must be out of reach of children under 8 years.
  • Always unplug the slow cooker when not in use and before cleaning.
  • Never let the cord hang down where a child could grab it.
  • Never plunge the hot cooking pot into cold water immediately after use or pour boiling water into an empty cold cooking pot, as sudden temperature changes can cause it to crack.

Disposal: At the end of its working life, the product must not be disposed of as urban waste. It should be taken to a special local authority differentiated waste collection centre or to a dealer providing this service, in accordance with the European Directive on Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE).
