The KENWOOD FG-273 is a versatile Function Generator that combines the functionalities of a function generator, pulse generator, sweep oscillator, and frequency counter in a compact and lightweight design.
Function Description:
The FG-273 is designed to generate various waveforms including sine, square, triangular, pulse, TTL/CMOS-level square, and ramp waves. It offers a wide oscillation frequency range from 0.02 Hz to 2 MHz, covered by seven selectable ranges. A key feature is its ability to perform both log and linear sweeps, with sweep frequency control up to a maximum ratio of 1000:1. The sweep frequency is variable from 0.5 Hz (2 seconds) to 50 Hz (20 milliseconds). External sweep control is possible by applying a sweep signal to the VCF connector. The device also allows for DC voltage overlay (0 to ±10V) on the output waveform. For digital circuit experiments, it provides TTL/CMOS square wave outputs. The symmetry function enables variation of symmetry for saw-tooth and pulse waves, and it can also invert wave polarity. An integrated 6-segment LED display shows the oscillation frequency, and a counter function covers a range from 5 Hz to 10 MHz.

Usage Features:
- One-touch Operation: Easy selection of sine, square, and triangular wave outputs.
- VCF IN Connector: Allows external sweep and output frequency control by applying voltage from 0 to +10V.
- Attenuation: Maximum attenuation over 60 dB through combined use of -20 dB and -40 dB attenuator pushbuttons and a continuous attenuator.
- Portability: Small and lightweight case with a convenient carrying handle that also functions as a tilting stand.
- Counter Display: Digitally displays internal oscillation frequency or external input signal frequency.
- Sweep Width Control: Internal sweep width is controlled by rotating the knob. External sweep is activated when the knob is pushed, and external sweep voltage is applied to the VCF input connector.
- Sweep Rate Control: Controls the sweep rate (sweep frequency) of the internal sweep oscillator. Pulling the knob selects logarithmic sweep.
- DUTY/PULL INV Knob: Adjusts the symmetry of output signals (1:1 to 40:1 duty ratio) for pulse, ramp, saw-tooth, and asymmetric sine waves. Pulling the knob inverts the phase polarity.
- OFFSET/PULL ADJ Control: Admits DC voltage to the output signal. Clockwise rotation adds positive voltage, counterclockwise adds negative voltage.
- PUSH TTL Knob (CMOS Level Control Knob): Pulling the knob varies the CMOS square wave level from 5Vpp to 15Vpp. When depressed, it causes no variation in TTL square wave levels.
- AMPLITUDE Control: Varies the amplitude of the output waveform.
- Frequency Range/Gate Time Selector Switch Assembly: Selects seven oscillation frequency ranges and four gate time ranges.
- COUNTER EXT Selector Pushbutton: Toggles between external input frequency and internal oscillation frequency for the counter.
- COUNTER -20 dB Pushbutton: Attenuates the counter input signal by 20 dB.
- ATTENUATOR Pushbuttons: Attenuate the output signal by 20 dB and 40 dB respectively.
- FUNCTION Selector Switch Assembly: Selects the desired output waveform (sine, triangle, or square).
- TTL/CMOS Output Jack: Provides TTL-level or CMOS square waves.
- EXT COUNTER Input Jack: For measuring the frequency of external signals.
- VCF Input Jack: Allows variation of output signal frequency by applying voltage (0 to 10V) when the WIDTH pushbutton is depressed.
- OUTPUT Jack: Outputs the selected sine, triangle, or square wave.
Maintenance Features:
- Fuse Replacement: If the fuse blows, the cause should be identified and eliminated before replacing it with a new 0.3 A slow-blow fuse for 100-120 V supply or a 0.2 A fuse for 220-240 V supply. The fuse holder is located on the rear panel.
- Changing Supply Voltage: The FG-273 supports 100, 120, 220, and 240 VAC, 50/60 Hz. To change the supply voltage, the case must be opened (after disconnecting power). The voltage selector plug on the printed circuit board needs to be reconnected to the desired voltage position on the voltage terminal board.
- Case Removal: To access internal components for maintenance, the unit needs to be turned upside down, and four screws removed from the case base plate, allowing the base plate to be lifted off.
- Warm-up Time: While the device operates immediately upon power-on, accurate measurements require sufficient warm-up time after pressing the POWER switch.
- Environmental Precautions: Avoid using the generator in direct sunlight, very hot and humid rooms, areas with excessive mechanical vibrations, or near devices emitting strong magnetic forces or pulse voltage.
- Power Cycling: Do not repeatedly switch the generator on and off.
