INTRODUCTION
Kenwood Communication Corporation has recently released 80 Series Version 2 radios with
some New added FleetSync™* features. FleetSync™ is a two-way paging protocol that extends
communication capability in the 80-Series family of radios. This application guide is designed to
help you understand its features and show you how they may be implemented in a radio system.
To get started, first read Understanding FleetSync (on the next page) and then scan through the
remaining pages to familiarize yourself with some typical FleetSync applications. If needed, also

Do you have a question about the Kenwood FleetSync 80 Series and is the answer not in the manual?

Overview

The Kenwood 80 Series is a line of radios designed for two-way communication, featuring the FleetSync™ signaling protocol. This protocol enhances communication capabilities by allowing for various data transmissions in addition to voice. The 80 Series radios are compatible with both trunked and conventional radio systems, offering flexibility in deployment.

Function Description:

The primary function of the Kenwood 80 Series radios is two-way voice communication. However, the integration of FleetSync™ significantly expands their capabilities beyond basic voice calls. FleetSync™ enables the transmission of various data types, including:

  • PTT ID (Digital ANI): Automatically transmits the radio's unique identification number when the Push-To-Talk (PTT) button is pressed. This allows dispatchers and other users to identify who is transmitting.
  • SelCall: Selective calling allows users to initiate calls to specific individuals or groups of radios, rather than broadcasting to an entire fleet. This enhances privacy and reduces unnecessary radio traffic.
  • Status Messages: Pre-programmed messages (e.g., "Call Office," "Complete") can be sent to dispatchers or other radios, providing quick updates without the need for voice communication.
  • Emergency Status Messages: Dedicated emergency features allow users to send an alert message to a dispatcher, indicating a distress situation. This can include an alert tone and a light circuit at the dispatcher's station.
  • Short Text Messaging: Allows for the transmission of short, alphanumeric messages (up to 48 characters) between radios and dispatchers.
  • Long Text Messaging: Extends text messaging capabilities to up to 1,024 alphanumeric characters.
  • GPS/AVL Data: When equipped with FleetSync™ Enhanced GPS features, the radios can transmit GPS location data to a dispatcher, enabling Automatic Vehicle Location (AVL) tracking.

Important Technical Specifications:

While specific technical specifications like frequency ranges, power output, and battery life are not detailed in the provided text, the manual highlights several key features related to FleetSync™ and radio configuration:

  • Fleet and ID Number Format: The radios support a wide range of Fleet and ID numbers. Fleet numbers can range from 1 to 349, and ID numbers from 1000 to 4999. This allows for the organization of large radio fleets.
  • PTT ID Data Inhibit: The PTT ID can be inhibited (not transmitted) if desired.
  • ID List Capacity: The radios can store a significant number of ID tags (up to 100 in Version 2), allowing for easy identification of frequently contacted units.
  • Status Message Capacity: Up to 80 pre-programmed status messages can be stored (Version 2).
  • TX Inhibit Per ID / Status: The ability to inhibit transmission based on specific IDs or status messages.
  • BCL (Busy Channel Lockout): Prevents transmission on a busy channel.
  • Com Port Configuration: Supports 1 or 2 COM ports for GPS messaging, depending on the radio version.
  • FleetSync™ Horn Alert: An optional feature that can trigger an external horn alert.
  • Emergency Man Down: An emergency feature that can be triggered by a "man down" sensor.
  • Emergency Mode Disable: Allows for disabling of emergency mode.
  • Emergency Locator Tones: Transmits specific tones to aid in locating a radio in emergency situations.

Usage Features:

The Kenwood 80 Series radios offer a variety of usage features designed to enhance communication efficiency and safety:

  • Selective Alert / Individual Call: Users can select and alert a specific radio within a talk group. This is useful for private conversations or directing specific instructions. The radio will emit an alert tone and illuminate the ID of the calling unit.
  • Selective Alert / Fleet Call: Allows a dispatcher to select and alert an entire fleet of radios.
  • Selective Alert / Supervisor Call: Enables a dispatcher to select and alert all supervisor units within a fleet. This is useful for broadcasting important information to management.
  • Selective Alert / Broadcast Call: Allows a dispatcher to select and alert all units in all fleets.
  • General Dispatch Status Message: Users can send pre-programmed status messages to a dispatcher or other radios. The dispatcher's LCD will display the message, and the radio's LCD will show a "COMPLETE" message upon successful transmission.
  • Emergency Alert: In an emergency, pressing the Emergency Button notifies the dispatcher. The dispatcher's station will emit a repeating alert tone and flash a light circuit.
  • Emergency Alert Man-Down (Optional CAE-3 Tilt Switch Required): If a CAE-3 tilt switch is installed, the radio can automatically send an emergency message if it detects a "man down" situation.
  • Over-the-Air Stun/Revive: Dispatchers can remotely disable (stun) or re-enable (revive) a radio over the air. This is useful for managing lost or stolen radios.
  • Short Text Messaging: Allows for quick, silent communication of short messages, reducing voice traffic.
  • Long Text Messaging: Provides more detailed text communication capabilities.
  • GPS/AVL Mapping and Fleet Management: When integrated with FleetSync™ Enhanced GPS/AVL software, dispatchers can view the real-time location of radios on a map, track their movements, and manage fleet operations more effectively.

Maintenance Features:

While the manual does not explicitly detail maintenance procedures, it does mention features that contribute to the overall management and potential "maintenance" from a system perspective:

  • FleetSync™ Enhanced Options: The system supports various enhanced features that can be added or configured, suggesting a modular and adaptable design. These include:
    • L-875 Install FleetSync Enhanced options in 80 series Mobile.
    • L-918 Install Internal KCT-31 PC Interface Cable.
    • KCT-31 is used when connecting an 80-Series Mobile Radio to a PC for Short/Long Text Messaging and PC Control.
    • L-905 – L-907 Order FleetSync Dealer enhanced retrofit kit (See Price Pages).
  • Programming and Configuration: The manual implies that many features are programmable, allowing for customization to specific operational needs. This would typically be done by a dealer or qualified technician.
  • Software Updates: The mention of "80 Series Version 2" suggests that the system is subject to updates and improvements, which can enhance functionality and address potential issues.
  • Troubleshooting Sections: The introduction advises users to consult "accessory interface and troubleshooting sections" for common problems, indicating that the manual provides guidance for basic troubleshooting.

The Kenwood 80 Series radios, with their FleetSync™ capabilities, are designed for professional use in environments where efficient and reliable communication, along with data transmission and fleet management, are critical.
