VOICE RECOGNITION
1
AND BLUETOOTH
®2
Using Voice Recognition
Improve Bluetooth
®
Voice Recognition (VR) performance
by making a few simple changes to your phone contacts:
Use full names (first and last names) vs. short
or single-syllable names (“John Smith” vs. “Dad,”
“Smith Residence” vs. “Home”).
Avoid using special characters, emojis, and hyphenated
names (@, &, #, /, -, *, +, etc.).
Avoid using acronyms (“Emergency” vs. “ICE” or “In
Case of Emergency”) or words with all capital letters.
Spell words completely; system will not recognize
abbreviations (“Doctor Smith” vs. “Dr. Smith”).
Always wait for the beep before speaking
any commands.
When using VR to place a call, speak in a natural,
moderate tone, with clear pronunciation. The system
may have trouble recognizing commands if you speak
too softly or too loudly.
Open windows, sunroof, weather (wind/rain), or an
A/C fan operating at higher speeds can interfere with
VR accuracy.
Your VR system may have difficulty understanding
some accents or uncommon names.
Press the talk button and say “Help” to get a list of
available commands.
Pairing or Connecting Your Phone with Bluetooth
®
Press the Phone hard key (if equipped) or “Call” button
on the steering wheel to begin the pairing process if
no phone has previously been paired.
During the pairing process, please make sure you

To pair a second phone or subsequent phones, reference
the manuals and guides supplied with your Sportage
as steps vary by radio.
If you experience any issues with auto-connection, try
the following:
Reboot your phone (turn the phone off and then on).
Update the phone operating system to the most
recently released version.
Delete the phone from the list of Bluetooth
®
devices
on the UVO display
1
and delete UVO from the list of
Bluetooth
®
devices on your phone, and re-pair.
Ensure the phone has the Bluetooth
®
feature
activated.
If some contacts are not downloading to the UVO
display, check to confirm that the contact has been
entered correctly and that it has been stored under
the categories (HOME, MOBILE, WORK, iPhone
®3
)
that are supported by the UVO display. Some
contact categories (MAIN, PAGER, OTHER) may not
be supported. If the number of contacts exceeds
the maximum number allowed on the UVO display,
contacts will be partially downloaded. Ensure that
only the “phone contact list” is selected for contact
download on your phone (not social media or email
contact lists as these contacts may not download
to the UVO display).
Phone operating systems change frequently and some
phones may have varying compatibility levels with the
Bluetooth
®
system. For any questions regarding the
features of your vehicle, please contact your preferred
Kia dealer or contact Kia Consumer Assistance at

Overview

This document provides a comprehensive guide to the features and functionalities of the 2021 Kia Sportage, focusing on various driver-assist systems, connectivity options, and convenience features.

Voice Recognition and Bluetooth®

The vehicle incorporates a Voice Recognition (VR) system to facilitate hands-free operation. For optimal performance, it is recommended to use full names in phone contacts (e.g., "John Smith" instead of "Dad"), avoid special characters, emojis, hyphens, acronyms, and all-caps words. Users should spell words completely and wait for a beep before issuing commands. Speaking in a natural, moderate tone with clear pronunciation is crucial for accurate recognition. Environmental factors like open windows, sunroofs, or high-speed A/C fans can interfere with VR accuracy. If the system struggles with accents or uncommon names, users can say "Help" to access a list of available commands.

For Bluetooth® pairing, users can press the Phone hard key or the "Call" button on the steering wheel. During pairing, it's important to accept all requests for phonebook download and future auto-connection. For subsequent phone pairings, refer to the vehicle's manuals as steps may vary by radio. If auto-connection issues arise, troubleshooting steps include rebooting the phone, updating its operating system, deleting and re-pairing the device from both the UVO display and the phone, and ensuring Bluetooth® is activated on the phone. If some contacts fail to download, verify they are entered correctly and stored under supported categories (HOME, MOBILE, WORK, iPhone®3). Unsupported categories (MAIN, PAGER, OTHER) may not download. If the number of contacts exceeds the UVO display's maximum, contacts will be partially downloaded. Ensure only the "phone contact list" is selected for download, not social media or email lists. Bluetooth® reception is influenced by carrier coverage and phone dependency. When streaming audio, ensure the device's listening volume is turned up.

Smartphone Connectivity

The Sportage supports both Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™ for seamless smartphone integration.

  • Apple CarPlay®: This feature allows effortless command of a compatible iPhone® through the UVO display. Users can make calls, send hands-free texts, access music and apps, and utilize Siri® voice control for navigation. For connection instructions, refer to the provided YouTube link.
  • Android Auto™: This enables connection of a compatible Android™ phone via the UVO display, providing access to music, the phone's dialer, and navigation with an intuitive interface and voice commands, including steering wheel controls. For connection instructions, refer to the provided YouTube link.

Smart Cruise Control (SCC) with Stop & Go System

The SCC with Stop & Go system helps maintain a predetermined distance from vehicles ahead by automatically adjusting driving speed. It can slow down the vehicle to maintain distance without requiring accelerator or brake pedal input.

  • Setting/Adjusting Speed: Press the CRUISE button (A) to turn the system ON. Accelerate/decelerate to the desired speed, then press the (SET-) button (B) down to set the speed. The SET indicator will illuminate, showing the set speed and vehicle-to-vehicle distance on the LCD screen. Press button (B) up or down to adjust the set speed.
  • Adjusting Vehicle-to-Vehicle Distance: Press the SCC button on the steering wheel. The image on the LCD screen (G) will change as settings are scrolled.
  • Canceling SCC: Press the CANCEL button or the brake pedal. The LCD screen will display a message indicating SCC operation is cancelled (G).
  • Turning SCC OFF: Press the CRUISE button (A). The CRUISE indicator on the instrument cluster will turn OFF.

Lane Keeping Assist (LKA) / Lane Departure Warning (LDW)

The LKA system guides the driver to keep the vehicle within its lane and provides steering inputs if the vehicle is about to deviate.

  • Activation: With the Engine Start/Stop button in the ON position, press the LKA button (A) to turn the system ON or OFF. The instrument cluster indicator will illuminate white. It remains white below 40 mph or when lane markers are not detected. When lane markers are detected and steering assistance is available, the LKA icon illuminates green.
  • Operation: If the LKA detects lane deviation, an audible warning and LDW alert will display. If deviation continues, the LKA provides steering inputs to prevent leaving the lane.
  • Modes: Standard LKA is the default. Users can switch between Standard LKA, Active LKA, and LDW via User Settings in the Instrument Cluster. Active LKA provides more frequent steering inputs. LDW only alerts the driver without providing steering inputs.
  • Conditions: All systems operate above approximately 40 mph, when the vehicle is between lane markers, and when the LKA system recognizes the lane. LKA/LDW settings persist across ignition cycles.

High Beam Assist (HBA)

HBA automatically adjusts headlight range by switching between high and low beams based on detected vehicles and road conditions.

  • Enabling HBA: Toggle the light switch to the AUTO Light position (A) and turn on high beams by pushing the lever away. The High Beam Assist indicator will illuminate.
  • Operation: HBA operates when vehicle speed exceeds 25 mph.

Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist-Pedestrian (FCA-PED) / Forward Collision Warning (FCW)

FCA-Ped is designed to alert the driver and, under certain conditions, apply emergency braking when rapidly approaching a slowing, braking, or stopped vehicle.

  • Warning: Initially, FCA-Ped provides FCW with an audible warning and visual alert on the instrument cluster (A). Alert settings (Early, Normal, Late) can be adjusted or turned off in user settings.
  • Braking: If collision risk increases, FCA-Ped can automatically apply brakes to reduce speed and minimize collision effects. FCA-Ped can be turned ON in the User Settings menu on the Instrument Cluster display.
  • Conditions: FCA-Ped/FCW activates when the Engine Start/Stop button is ON, vehicle speed is more than 5 mph, and Electronic Stability Control (ESC) is ON.
  • Warning: These are supplemental systems; users should never intentionally activate or test them and should always drive safely.

Smart-Power Liftgate Operation

With the Smart Key fob on the user's person and near the vehicle's rear, hazard lights will blink and a chime will sound for about 3 seconds before the Smart-Power Liftgate opens. This alert system will blink and chime two additional times before opening.

  • Enabling: The Smart-Power Liftgate feature is off by default. To enable, go to User Settings in the LCD Instrument Cluster modes.
  • Adjusting Opening Height:
    1. Manually position the liftgate to the preferred height.
    2. Press the Power Liftgate Close button (A) for more than 3 seconds.
    3. A system beep will sound twice, indicating the height setting has been saved. The liftgate will then open to the set height. To change the setting again, repeat steps 1-3.

UVO Link requires the cellphone and vehicle to be connected to a cellular network with good wireless signal strength. Remote commands may fail or take longer to execute otherwise.

  • Remote Start/Climate Control: All doors, hood, and trunk/lift-gate must be closed and locked. This feature operates for about 10 minutes.
  • Vehicle Status: The quickest way to obtain accurate vehicle status is by pressing a refresh button on the app or customer web portal.
  • Battery Preservation: UVO will not work seven days after the ignition was last turned on to preserve vehicle battery. Re-starting the vehicle with a key fob is required to use UVO again.

Accessory Mode with Smart Key

With Smart Key-equipped vehicles, users can enter accessory mode without starting the vehicle to utilize electronic accessories.

  • Activation: Enter the vehicle with the Smart Key and push the ENGINE START/STOP button once without depressing the brake pedal. ACC will illuminate in amber.
  • Battery Discharge Prevention: If the ENGINE START/STOP button is in ACC for more than 1 hour, it automatically turns off to prevent battery discharge.

ECO Mode (Active ECO)

Eco Mode (Active Eco) is designed to improve fuel economy by controlling vehicle components. It optimizes drivetrain operations like engine power and transmission.

  • Activation: Press the DRIVE MODE button and scroll through options until in ECO mode. The ECO indicator light (A) in the instrument cluster will illuminate green. Active ECO remains on even after the ignition is cycled.
  • Deactivation: Press the DRIVE MODE button again and change to another mode.

Trip Modes / Trip Computer

The Trip Computer is a driver information system displayed when the ignition switch or Engine Start/Stop button is in the ON position.

  • Cycling Modes: Press the Mode button to cycle through different LCD Instrument Cluster modes.
  • Resetting Tripmeter: In Trip Computer mode, press the Move/Reset/OK button (B) to cycle through screens. When displaying TRIP A or TRIP B screens, press and hold the OK button (B) to reset the Tripmeter to zero.

Fuel Door Operation

To open the fuel door, press the right edge of the fuel door. It opens only when the driver's door is unlocked. Tighten the cap until it clicks once; otherwise, the Check Engine Light may illuminate.

Parking Distance Warning-Forward and Reverse

This supplemental system assists the driver by chiming if objects are detected in the sensing area when moving forward or backing up.

  • Activation: The system activates when the ignition is ON and the vehicle is in R (Reverse). To deactivate, press the Parking Distance Warning-Forward and Reverse button (A) (LED illuminated).
  • Operation: The system may not activate correctly if the vehicle is moving above 3 mph. If more than two objects are sensed, the closest one is recognized first.
  • Warning: This system is not a substitute for proper and safe backing-up procedures. Always drive safely and use caution. It may not detect every object.

Unfastening Center Seatbelt

  1. If the seatbelt is buckled, press the release button on the buckle.
  2. To retract the 2nd-Row Center Seatbelt (A) into the headliner, press the "release button" on the buckle by inserting the seat belt tongue plate (B) in the small slot on the center buckle (C).

Satellite Radio Reception

Satellite radio reception requires a direct line of sight with the satellite transmitting the radio signal. Obstacles like tunnels, bridges, covered parking, mountainous terrain, tall buildings, and heavy foliage may momentarily interrupt the signal. This is normal, and reception will be restored within a few seconds in an open, unobstructed area. The signal can become weak in some areas not covered by the satellite repeater network.

Downhill Brake Control (DBC)

DBC helps negotiate steep slopes slowly and safely without excessive brake pedal force.

  • Activation: The DBC select button (A) must be actively selected before starting descent.
  • Cancellation: The system can be cancelled by pressing the DBC select button a second time or if the vehicle accelerates above 38 MPH.
  • Operation: A slight spring-type noise or mild vibration may be felt, which is normal.

USB Ports and Use of Cables

The vehicle may contain USB port(s) for data transfer or music playback from a compatible media device (A), and USB port(s) designed for fast charging (B).

  • Charging: Devices will only charge when the vehicle is in ACC/ON/Start position.
  • Plugging In: If difficulty plugging in a USB device, change its orientation.
  • Cables: Always use USB charging cables certified by the device manufacturer. Aftermarket cables are not recommended as they may impact functionality.

Hill Start Assist Control (HAC)

HAC prevents the vehicle from rolling backward on an inclined surface. It holds braking pressure for 2 seconds after releasing the brake pedal, providing time to press the accelerator pedal. This is a supplemental system and does not replace the need to apply brakes.

Wireless Smartphone Charging System

  1. The system must be enabled in the instrument cluster settings menu, and all doors must be closed.
  2. Place a compatible smartphone on the center of the charging pad.
  3. The indicator light (A) will turn amber when wireless charging begins.
  4. Once charging is complete, the amber light will turn green.

Wind Buffeting

When driving with rear windows lowered or the sunroof open, wind buffeting or pulsation-type noise may occur. This is normal and can be reduced or eliminated by partially lowering both front windows by an inch or more, or by partially closing the sunroof.

Condensation Inside Exterior Vehicle Lights

The vehicle's exterior lights with clear lenses are vented to the atmosphere. When humid/moist air enters the headlight/tail light, moisture may condense on the lens surface, appearing as fogging or water droplets. This is normal, and the moisture will evaporate when the lights are turned ON or when the temperature increases.

Rear View Monitor (RVM)

The RVM is a supplemental system that displays the view behind the vehicle through the audio head unit screens when the vehicle is in Reverse.

  • Activation: The RVM activates when the Engine Start/Stop button is in the ON (Red light) position and the Gear Shift Lever is in the R (Reverse) position.
  • Maintenance: The rear camera may become dirty from normal use or inclement weather. Use a clean microfiber cloth to remove dirt, debris, or spots from the lens.
  • Operation: While RVM is active, the volume will be lowered on all audio modes.
