Do you have a question about the KILN care Hobbyfuser 3 and is the answer not in the manual?

Overview

The Hobbyfuser 3 kiln is designed for glasswork, specifically for stained glass applications, fusing, and slumping. It is manufactured by Kilncare Limited and is built to meet European Directives and British Standards, with specific design considerations for Sweden.

Function Description

The Hobbyfuser 3 is an electric kiln used to heat glass to high temperatures for various glass art techniques such as fusing and slumping. It operates by heating elements that raise the internal temperature of the kiln chamber according to a programmed cycle. The kiln is controlled by a KCR2 controller, which allows users to set specific ramp rates, temperatures, and dwell times for each segment of a firing program.

Important Technical Specifications

  • Power Supply: The kiln is fitted with a Euro Schuko plug top and is designed to work from standard 230V socket outlets. It is not advisable to use it with an extension lead.
  • Electrical Safety: The kiln meets all Electrical Safety Directives, including a lid safety switch. It requires a sound earth connection.
  • Elements: The Hobbyfuser 3 has three elements, each consisting of a pair of tubes.
  • Controller: It uses a KCR2 controller, which has 9 settable programs, each with 9 segments. The controller is pre-set with the kiln's characteristics and has undergone a test firing at the factory.
  • Temperature Range: The kiln can reach temperatures suitable for glass fusing, slumping, and coloring up to the maximum temperature stated on the kiln data plate.
  • Dimensions/Clearance: A minimum of 30cm clearance is required around both sides of the kiln for installation.
  • Weight: The floor or bench where the kiln is sited must be capable of carrying its weight.
  • Ventilation: It is advised to site the kiln in a room with ventilation.
  • Manufacturing Year: 2019.

Usage Features

  • Initial Firing: Before the first use, the top bung of the lid vent should be left out to dry and "settle" the kiln. A slight odor and smoke may be emitted during the first few firings due to binding resins burning out. It is recommended to perform the initial firing in a well-ventilated area.
  • Controller Connection: The KCR2 controller plugs into a socket at the rear right-hand side of the kiln and can only be connected in one way. A clamp ensures a sound connection. A small blue stand is provided for the KCR2 to sit on a bench or be mounted to a wall.
  • Lid Vent: The vent plug in the roof of the kiln can be inserted or removed while the lid is open. For damp items, it's advisable to leave the vent out until around 550°C.
  • Cooling with Lid Clasp: For aiding cooling at relatively low temperatures (below 100°C), the lid clasp can be undone, and the top half of the clasp can be rested on the main base section, allowing a slight opening.
  • Loading: Glass items should be placed on a separating medium (e.g., fiber paper or a refractory batt with batt wash) to prevent sticking to the kiln bricks or shelf. The work can be placed directly on the kiln floor with a separator. The lid should be clamped shut during firing to ensure a tight seal.
  • Programming: The KCR2 allows users to set ramp rates (how fast the kiln heats up), target temperatures, and dwell times (how long the kiln holds a temperature) for each segment. "FULL" indicates heating as quickly as possible. Programs can be selected, started, paused, forwarded to the next segment, and altered during firing. A delay start feature is also available.
  • Safety Features: The kiln has a lid safety switch that prevents elements from heating if the lid is open.

Maintenance Features

  • Electrical Connection Checks: It is advisable to check all electrical connections every 6 months for tightness and discoloration due to heat.
  • Portable Appliance Testing (PAT): Depending on the establishment, the kiln may require PAT. The KCR2 controller must be disconnected before testing to avoid damage.
  • Damaged Brick Replacement: The bricks in the lower half of the kiln are fully replaceable and available pre-cut. To replace, simply lift out the old brick, clear any debris, and slide in the new one. Brick 9, which houses the thermocouple, requires removing the rear box cover, undoing the retention bracket, and sliding out the thermocouple. A 3.5mm hole needs to be drilled in the new brick for the thermocouple. Always wear a dust mask and work in a well-ventilated area when handling fired refractory items.
  • Element Replacement: If an element fails, first unplug the kiln. Unscrew the two side cover boxes to access element connections. Disconnect both ends of the elements from their porcelain connector blocks. Slide out the old element (which consists of a pair of tubes) and slide in the new one from the left-hand side. Handle element tubes with care, using disposable gloves, and avoid bare hands. Ensure the element is central in the roof space and fully inserted into the tubes on the non-connection side. Reconnect the element tails to the porcelain blocks, holding the blocks steady to prevent cracking. Re-fit the side cover boxes, ensuring wires are clear. A slight odor may be emitted during the first firing after element replacement as binders burn out.
  • Kiln Care: The kiln is not a mold dryer; molds should be thoroughly dried before insertion to prevent premature deterioration of the kiln structure. Care must be taken not to load the kiln to a height that obstructs the elements. Gentle operation of the lid is advised to prevent damage to the lid insulation seal.
  • Troubleshooting: The manual provides guidance for common issues such as the KCR2 having no lights, the kiln not heating up, error messages, hot plug tops, and crackling noises. For persistent problems, users are advised to contact Kilncare.
