Overview

This document provides user instructions for a KitchenAid dishwasher, covering its functions, usage, and maintenance to ensure optimal performance and longevity.

Function Description

The KitchenAid dishwasher is designed to clean and sanitize dishes, pots, pans, and other kitchenware efficiently. It utilizes a triple filtration system to minimize sound and optimize water and energy conservation while providing superior cleaning performance. The dishwasher offers various wash cycles and options to accommodate different soil levels and drying needs.

Key functional components include:

  • ProScrub® Trio (on some models): Powerful jets target water toward pots, pans, or casserole dishes loaded in the back of the dishwasher to clean stubborn messes. Two additional spray zones in the upper rack corners reach into deeper or oddly shaped items.
  • EQ Filtration System: This system removes soil from water and improves cleaning action, consisting of an upper filter assembly and a lower filter.
  • Rinse Aid Dispenser: Reduces spotting and improves drying performance.
  • Detergent Dispenser: Holds powdered, liquid, or tablet detergent for the wash cycle.
  • Pressurized Spray Nozzles and Variable Speed Motor: Provide effective cleaning throughout the wash cycle.
  • Heating Element: Used for heated drying options and to raise wash temperatures.
  • Active Vents (on some models): Assist in ventilating moist air during drying.

Usage Features

The dishwasher offers a range of cycles and options to customize the wash based on load size, soil amount, and desired results:

Wash Cycles:

  • ProWash™: The most advanced and versatile cycle. It senses load size, soil amount, and toughness to adjust water and energy for optimal cleaning. Recommended for tough soil, eliminating the need for pre-rinsing.
  • Tough: Designed for hard-to-clean, heavily soiled pots, pans, casseroles, and tableware.
  • Normal: Recommended for a full load of normally soiled dishes, defaulting to options suitable for normal food soil.
  • Light: For lightly soiled items or china and crystal.
  • Express Wash: Cleans dishes faster using slightly more water and energy. Ideal when quick results are needed.
  • Rinse Only: For rinsing dishes, glasses, and silverware that will not be washed right away. No detergent is used.

Options:

  • Heat Dry: Activates the heating element at the end of the wash cycle to speed drying. This option, combined with rinse aid, provides the best drying performance.
  • ProDry™: Dries dishes with heat and a fan system that ventilates moist air out of the dishwasher. This option, with rinse aid, offers superior drying performance, especially for plastic items which are less likely to deform.
  • Hi-Temp Wash: Raises the main wash temperature to improve cleaning for loads containing tough, baked-on food.
  • Sani Rinse: Sanitizes dishes and glassware according to NSF International standards. The Sani indicator confirms successful completion.
  • 4 Hour Delay (or 2-4-8 Hr. Delay): Delays the start of a cycle to a specified time, useful for off-peak electrical hours.
  • Control Lock: Prevents unintended use of the dishwasher by disabling buttons.
  • Top Rack Only: For washing small loads of dishes in the top rack.

Loading Features:

  • Premium Adjustable 2-Position Top Rack: Allows raising or lowering the top rack to accommodate tall items in either the top or bottom rack.
  • Removable Top Rack (for SatinGlide® and SatinGlide® Max rails): Enables washing larger items like pots, roasters, and cookie sheets in the bottom rack by removing the entire top rack.
  • Culinary Tool Rack (3rd level rack): Designed with 2 movable baskets to hold extra silverware, knives, and cooking utensils. Can be installed in an up or down position depending on space needs.
  • Flexible Fold-Down Tines: Rows of tines on the top and bottom racks can be adjusted to make room for various dishes.
  • Sliding Bowl Tines: Lower-rack tines that move left or right to fit larger items like cereal bowls.
  • Silverware Basket: Features slots for separating silverware for optimum wash and specially designed slots for chopsticks.
  • SURE-HOLD® Cup and Stemware Holder: An extra shelf on the mid-level rack to hold additional cups, stemware, or long items.
  • SURE-HOLD® Light Item Clips: Hold lightweight plastic items in place during washing.

Starting and Resuming a Cycle:

  • Always run hot water at the nearest sink before starting the dishwasher.
  • Press START/RESUME to begin a cycle or to resume after opening the door. If the door is not closed within 3 seconds of pressing START/RESUME, the cycle will not start.
  • The dishwasher may pause several times during a cycle, which is normal.

Maintenance Features

Regular maintenance is crucial for the dishwasher's peak performance and longevity.

Filtration System Cleaning:

  • The triple filter system (upper filter assembly and lower filter) needs periodic cleaning.
  • Recommended cleaning frequency: Varies based on the number of loads per week and whether dishes are scraped/rinsed before loading (e.g., every two months for 1-3 loads/week with no scraping, or once per year for 1-3 loads/week with scraping).
  • Removal: Turn the Upper Filter Assembly 1/4 turn counterclockwise and lift out. Grasp the Lower Filter in the circular opening, lift slightly, and pull forward.
  • Cleaning: Rinse filters under running water to remove soils. For hard-to-remove soils or calcium deposits, a soft brush may be required. Do not use wire brushes or scouring pads.
  • Reinstallation: Place the Lower Filter under the locating tabs, then insert the Upper Filter Assembly into the circular opening and rotate clockwise until it locks into place. Ensure filters are securely installed before operating the dishwasher.

General Cleaning:

  • Exterior: Clean with a soft, damp cloth and mild detergent. For stainless steel exteriors, use a stainless steel cleaner.
  • Interior: Hard water minerals can cause a white film. Clean with a paste of powdered dishwasher detergent on a damp sponge, or use liquid automatic dishwasher detergent. A vinegar rinse can also be used (2 cups white vinegar in a glass measuring cup in the lower rack, run a normal cycle with Heat Dry off, no detergent).
  • Hard Water/Filming Removal: Use a monthly maintenance product like affresh® Dishwasher Cleaner. Load the dishwasher with affected dishes, place the tablet in the main wash compartment, and select a cycle for heavily soiled dishes.
  • Drain Air Gap: Periodically clean the drain air gap (if present) to ensure proper drainage. Lift the chrome cover, unscrew the plastic cap, and check for soil buildup.

Vacation or Extended Time Without Use:

  • If not using the dishwasher for summer months, turn off the water and power supply.
  • Protect water supply lines against freezing conditions.
  • For winter storage, have the dishwasher winterized by authorized service personnel to avoid water damage.

This dishwasher is designed for user convenience, offering intuitive controls and clear feedback indicators for cycle status and potential issues. The troubleshooting section provides solutions for common problems, aiming to reduce the need for service calls.
