Overview

This document describes the Klein Tools BAT20-7T series, a battery-powered, multi-function cutting and crimping tool designed for professional use.

Function Description:

The BAT20-7T series tool is engineered to cut and crimp a wide range of materials. It is a versatile tool that can be fitted with various interchangeable heads for specific cutting and crimping tasks. The tool operates with a trigger switch to advance the crimping piston and a release switch to retract it. A crimp indicator light provides feedback on successful crimp completion. The tool is designed for quick-release heads, allowing for easy exchange between cutting and crimping functions.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Power Source: 20V Li-Ion battery
  • Force: 7 Tons (14,000 lbs; 6,350 Kg)
  • Operating Temperature: 14°F to 104°F (-10°C to 40°C)

Cutting Capacities (with appropriate cutting heads):

  • Up to 556 MCM ACSR
  • Up to 1000 MCM Aluminum
  • Up to 750 MCM Copper
  • Up to 7/16" EHS Guy Strand
  • Up to 3/8" Grade 8 Bolts

Crimping Capacities (with appropriate crimping heads):

  • Up to 350 MCM Aluminum
  • Up to 600 MCM Copper

Available Cutting Heads:

  • BAT20-7T10: For Aluminum, Copper, and ACSR
  • BAT20-7T9: For Aluminum and Copper only
  • BAT20-7T11: For Steel (Guy Strand and Bolts)

Available Crimping Heads:

  • BAT20-7T6: BG and D3 (W-style die compatible)
  • BAT20-7T12: O and D3 (W-style die compatible)
  • BAT20-7T7: D3 (W-style die compatible)

Usage Features:

  • Trigger Switch (1): Activates the tool to advance the crimping piston for cutting or crimping.
  • Trigger Lock (2): Prevents unintentional activation of the trigger switch.
  • Release Switch (3): Releases hydraulic pressure and retracts the piston. This function is designed to activate only after a complete 7-ton crimp cycle is achieved.
  • Crimp Indicator Light (4): Illuminates green when the tool has reached full 7-ton pressure and a crimp is successfully completed. If the light does not illuminate, it indicates a problem with the tool.
  • Head Release Pin (7): Allows for quick exchange of interchangeable heads. The pin twists 1/4 turn to release and locks the new head in place with a push and 1/4 turn twist.
  • Battery Pack (8): A 20V Li-Ion battery powers the tool.
  • Battery Release Button (9): Used to remove the battery pack from the tool.
  • Fuel Gauge Button (10): Activates the fuel gauge on compatible DeWALT battery packs, which indicates the remaining charge level via three green LED lights.
  • Lift Ring (11): Intended for moving the tool into hard-to-reach areas. It is crucial not to use this ring for tethering or securing the tool to a person or object during elevated use.
  • Worklights (13): Two worklights provide illumination for the work area.
  • Battery Installation/Removal: To install, align the battery pack with the rails in the handle and slide it until seated. To remove, press the release button and pull the battery pack out. After removal, squeezing the trigger for three seconds dissipates any residual electric charge.
  • Battery Charging: The tool uses DeWALT chargers (Models DCB107, DCB112, DCB113, DCB115). The charging process is indicated by a blinking red light, and completion is indicated by a continuously ON red light. Chargers have a hot/cold delay feature to protect the battery. Optimal charging temperature is between 65°F and 75°F (18°-24°C).
  • Safety Precautions: Always wear ANSI Z87.1 eye protection, ANSI S12.6 (S3.19) hearing protection, and NIOSH/OSHA/MSHA respiratory protection. Avoid operating the tool in wet conditions, explosive atmospheres, or when tired or under the influence. Do not modify the tool. Keep children and bystanders away. Ensure the trigger lock is engaged before handling.

Maintenance Features:

  • General Maintenance: Inspect the tool before and after each use for damage or loose parts. Do not use if damaged.
  • Cutting Blade Replacement: If necessary, remove the battery pack and head. Loosen hex screws, remove old blades, insert new blades in reverse order, and tighten hex screws. Thread lock adhesive is recommended for optimal performance.
  • Hydraulic Fluid: Use only Shell Telus T15 or an equivalent hydraulic fluid when changing or adding oil.
  • Cleaning: Blow dirt and dust out of air vents weekly with clean, dry air. Use a cloth dampened with water and mild soap for non-metallic parts. Do not use solvents or harsh chemicals. For the charger, disconnect from the AC outlet and clean the exterior with a cloth or soft non-metallic brush; do not use water or cleaning solutions.
  • Storage: Store the tool in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. For prolonged storage, battery packs should be fully charged and stored out of the charger.
  • Service: There are no user-serviceable parts inside the tool. For repairs or abnormalities, contact Klein Tools for an authorized service center. The charger and battery pack are also not serviceable by the user and should be serviced by a DeWALT factory service center.
  • Battery Recycling: The RBRC™ Seal indicates that the costs to recycle nickel cadmium, nickel metal hydride, or lithium ion batteries have been paid. These batteries should be returned to an authorized DeWALT service center or local retailer for recycling. Do not incinerate battery packs.
  • Warranty: Klein Tools Battery Operated Tools have a warranty against defects in materials and workmanship. DeWALT chargers come with a Three Year Limited Warranty, and DeWALT battery packs have Two or Three Years free service, depending on the model. Warranty is voided if the battery pack is tampered with.
