Signal Controller TI 96
General Information
Signal Controller TI 96 is a robust, simple, inexpensive unit
which can be installed in all types of vessels. Two types are
available. One type for vessels with more than 100m between
whistles and one type for vessels with less than 100m between
whistles.
TI 96 can be controlled by external push–buttons (see wiring
diagram overleaf).
It must be noted that when the whistle is activated by the
external push–button, the automatics will stop. The external
push–button does not control the lamp output.
Automatic Signalling
The automatics have six signal characters.
All characters can be used for the whistles or the lamp or both
simultaneously.
The period time is always 90 seconds (optional 60 seconds).
The automatics start when the symbol switch is turned to the
required position even if the switch before starting is in the
OFF/RESET position or at another symbol.
The red LED lights steady, when unit in automatic operation.
When a push-button is activated the red LED on the front
starts to flicker, to give the operator the information that the
automatic is stopped.
The automatics switch off in OFF/RESET position.
It can also be switched off by pressing the push–button
HAND. The symbol switch should then be turned to the
OFF/RESET position.
The indicating LED extinguishes when the symbol switch
is in OFF/RESET position only indicating that the Signal
Controller is shut off.
It is also possible to change the symbol (whistle, lamp or
whistle plus lamp) during signalling by turning the symbol
switch direct to the required position. If the automatics have
been shut off via the hand push–button and the symbol
switch still being in the previous position, the automatics
can be re–started with the same symbol by turning the
switch to the nearest position and then quickly back to the
previous position.
Manual Signalling
The push–button HAND is for manual signalling. It shuts off
an “automatic” signal even during signalling. A mains failure
also shuts off the automatics.
The internal push-button control output as per symbol switch.
If the switch is in the position OFF/RESET” then the HAND
push-button will activate the sound .

Overview

The Kockum Sonics Signal Controller TI 96 is an automatic signal controller designed for both whistle and lamp operation on vessels. It is a robust, simple, and inexpensive unit suitable for installation in all types of vessels. Two main types are available: one for vessels with more than 100m between whistles and another for vessels with less than 100m between whistles.

Function Description

The TI 96 controller manages the automatic and manual signalling of six distinct signal characters, which can be used for whistles, lamps, or both simultaneously. The unit features an automatic signalling mode with a fixed period time of 90 seconds (an optional 60-second period is also available). Automatic operation begins when the symbol switch is turned to the desired position, regardless of its previous setting. During automatic operation, a red LED on the front panel illuminates steadily. If an external push-button is activated, the red LED will flicker, indicating that the automatic operation has been temporarily stopped.

The automatics can be switched off by turning the symbol switch to the OFF/RESET position or by pressing the HAND push-button. If switched off via the HAND push-button, the symbol switch should then be moved to the OFF/RESET position. The indicating LED extinguishes only when the symbol switch is in the OFF/RESET position, confirming that the Signal Controller is shut off.

The symbol (whistle, lamp, or whistle plus lamp) can be changed during signalling by directly turning the symbol switch to the desired position. If the automatics were previously shut off via the HAND push-button while the symbol switch remained in its previous position, they can be restarted with the same symbol by quickly turning the switch to the nearest position and then back to the previous position.

Manual signalling is performed using the HAND push-button. This button also serves to shut off an automatic signal even when it is actively signalling. A mains power failure will also cause the automatics to shut off. The internal push-button control output corresponds to the symbol switch setting. If the switch is in the "OFF/RESET" position, the HAND push-button will activate the sound.

Usage Features

The TI 96 can be controlled by external push-buttons, as detailed in the wiring diagram. It is important to note that when the whistle is activated by an external push-button, the automatic signalling will stop, and the external push-button does not control the lamp output.

The unit supports various signalling combinations:

  • A: Sound aft
  • F: Sound fwd
  • AF: Sound aft and fwd
  • AFL: Sound aft, fwd and lamp
  • FL: Sound fwd and lamp
  • AL: Sound aft and lamp
  • L: Lamp

Wiring Diagram Notes:

  • Only one power supply is permitted. If 115/230V AC is used for the TYFON and LANTERN sections, an AC/DC adaptor must be used to supply the TI96 on terminals 1 and 2.
  • The external manual switch must be able to handle 230V AC.
  • Jumpers are used to enable built-in spark suppressors when +12/24 VDC is used for the lantern/whistle.

Accessories:

  • Adaptor 230V AC to 12/24V DC (Ref.no. 20142030)
  • Adaptor 115V AC to 12V DC (Ref.no. 20142031)
  • Fuse for relay contact - 6A slow blow (Ref.no. 20556260)
  • Fuse for internal electronics - 1A quick blow (Ref.no. 20550100)

Maintenance Features

To meet EMC-protection requirements, it is crucial to:

  • Always use shielded cables.
  • Ensure the unit is properly connected to the ship's ground.
  • Connect the cable shields to the unit's cable clamps.

The internal electronics fuse (1A quick blow) and relay contact fuse (6A slow blow) are replaceable components, facilitating maintenance.
