Reassembly

Install Cylinder Head

1. Check to make sure there are no nicks or burrs

on the sealing surfaces of the cylinder head or

crankcase.

2. Rotate the cranksha to position the piston at

TDC on the compression stroke.

3. Install the dowel pins into the recesses around the

lower cylinder head bolt holes. See Figure 11-46.

4. Install a new cylinder head gasket.

5. Install the cylinder head and start the four hex

ﬂ ange screws. Torque the screws in increments

using the sequence shown. See Figure 11-47.

Torque the hex ﬂ ange screws following the table.

Assemble Cylinder Head

1. Install the valves into their respective positions.

2. Install new valve seals on the stem of the valves.

See Figure 11-44.

NOTE: The engine utilizes valve stem seals on the

valves. Always use a new seal when valves

are installed in the cylinder head. Never

reuse old seals.

3. Install the valve springs and retainers into their

respective locations in the cylinder head. Support

the valve heads from underneath. Using hand

pressure, compress each valve spring and slide

each retainer onto the valve stem to lock in place.

  Your Kohler Engine might be losing power due to several reasons: * The air cleaner element could be dirty; clean or replace it. * The engine might be overheated; allow it to cool. * There might be an excessive engine load; reduce it. * The exhaust could be restricted; inspect and clear any restrictions. * The spark plug might be faulty; replace it. * The crankcase oil level could be high; check and adjust it. * The governor setting might be incorrect; adjust it to the correct specification. * The battery might be low; charge or replace it. * There might be low compression; inspect the engine for causes of low compression. * The crankcase oil level could be low; check and refill it. * The fuel quality might be poor; ensure it is adequate.

  If your Kohler Engine starts but doesn't keep running, consider these potential causes: * The carburetor might be faulty; inspect, repair, or replace it. * The cylinder head gasket could be faulty; repair or replace it. * The choke or throttle controls might be faulty or misadjusted; adjust or replace them. * The fuel pump might be malfunctioning, or the vacuum hose could be clogged or leaking; repair or replace the fuel pump and/or vacuum hose. * There might be an intake system leak; inspect and repair the intake system for leaks. * There could be loose wires or connections that intermittently ground the ignition kill circuit; tighten them. * The fuel quality might be poor; ensure it is adequate. * The fuel tank cap vent might be restricted; clear or replace it.
