1.
Before
removing
the
spark
plugs,
clean
the
area
around
the
base
of
plugs
to
keep
dirt
and
debris
out
of
the
engine.
2.
Remove
the
plugs
and
check
condition.
Replace
the
plugs
if
wom
or
if
reuse
is
questionable.
Use
Champion®
type
RV17YC
(or
equivalent)
spark
plugs.
NOTE:
Do
not
clean
the
spark plugs
in
a
machine
using
abrasive
grit.
Some
grit
could
re-
main
in
spark
plugs
and
enter
the
engine
causing
extensive
wear
and
damage.
3.
Check
the
gaps
using
a
wire
feeler
gauge.
Adjust
gaps
to
0.035”
(0.89
mm)
by
carefully
bending
the
ground
electrode.
4.
Reinstall
the
spark plugs
Into
cylinder
heads.
Torque
plugs
to
10/15
ft.
Ib
(14/20
Nem).
INSPECTION
Inspect
the
spark
plugs
as
soon
as
they
are
removed
from
the
cylinder
heads.
The
deposits
on
the
tips
are
an
indication
of
the
general
condition
of
piston
rings,
valves,
and
carburetor.
Normal
and
faulty
spark
plugs
are
shown
in
the
follow-
ing
photos.
Normat:
A
plug
taken
from
an
engine
operating
under
nor-
mal
conditions
will
have
light
tan
or
gray
colored
deposits.
If
the
center
electrode
is
not
worn,
a
plug
in
this
condition
could
be
regapped
and
reused.
Carbon
Fouled:
Soft,
sooty,
black
deposits
indicate
incom-
plete
combustion.
Incomplete
combustion
is
usually
caused
by
over
rich
carburetion,
weak
ignition,
or
poor
compression.
