The Krell MD-10 is a high-end CD Transcription turntable, designed for the reproduction of digitally recorded music. It is part of the Krell family of audio components, known for uncompromised performance and leading-edge technology.
Function Description:
The MD-10 serves as a CD transport, meaning it reads digital audio data from compact discs and outputs it in various digital formats to a separate digital-to-analog processor. It is not designed to connect directly to a preamplifier or analog signal processor. The unit features a modified Philips CDM-4 PRO transport with a Hall effect motor and swing-arm design for precise disc reading. It incorporates a special termination system called TimeSync, which locks the clock between the MD-10 and specific Krell digital-to-analog processors, enhancing signal integrity.

Usage Features:
The MD-10 offers comprehensive control over CD playback, both from its front panel and via the included remote control.
Front Panel and Remote Control Functions:
- POWER: Turns the unit ON or OFF.
- STOP: Stops the disc from playing.
- PLAY: Starts the disc playing at track 1; also restarts play of the current track.
- PAUSE: Temporarily stops play of the current track.
- TRACK |< / TRACK >|: Selects the previous or next track.
- INDEX |< / INDEX >|: Selects the previous or next index within a track.
- SEARCH |< / SEARCH >|: Performs fast reverse or fast forward search.
- FTS (Favorite Track Selection): Programs FTS memory and plays FTS encoded discs.
- PROGRAM: Stores selected tracks in memory for custom playback sequences (up to 20 selections).
- REPEAT: Starts play from the beginning once the disc has finished.
Key Usage Notes:
- Disc Stabilizer: Always use the Krell CD Stabilizer provided. Never operate the transport without it, as this can damage the transport or compact discs. Do not use any other disc stabilizing tools, as they may not be precisely machined for the MD-10 and could cause damage.
- Dust Cover: The acrylic dust cover is delicate. Follow installation instructions carefully to avoid scarring. The unit can be operated without the dust cover, requiring 6 inches of vertical clearance. The damping system allows for a slow descent of the cover; do not force it down.
- Leveling: The MD-10 features adjustable suspension towers and a built-in bubble level for precise leveling. Counter-clockwise rotation raises the towers, and clockwise rotation lowers them. These are for fine adjustments and cannot compensate for gross surface irregularities.
- Digital Connections: Connect the MD-10's digital output to a Krell Digital Processor or other compatible digital-to-analog audio processor. Krell recommends AT&T Fibre Optic or AES/EBU for superior bandwidth, signal isolation, and noise rejection, especially for longer runs (beyond 2 meters).
- TimeSync Connection: For compatible Krell digital-to-analog converters, connect an AT&T fibre optic cable from the MD-10's "SPECIAL" termination to the converter's "TimeSync/Ext clock" input. This system locks the clock between the two units for enhanced performance. The TimeSync output cannot be used as an additional digital output.
- Track Programming: Tracks can be programmed for custom playback sequences using the front panel or remote control. Up to 20 selections can be stored.
- FTS Memory: Favorite Track Selection allows users to store desired tracks on a CD in a specific order. The MD-10 assigns a reference number to the programmed disc, remembering the sequence for future playback. FTS memory can only be erased via the front panel controls.
- Power On/Off: Krell recommends leaving the MD-10 ON at all times for optimal accuracy, stability, and longevity of components. Disconnect the AC cord during electrical storms or prolonged absences.
- CD Rings/Stabilizers: The MD-10 accepts discs with "CD Rings" due to their low mass. However, Krell advises against using any additional disc stabilizers, as they add too much mass to the laser servo system and may burn out the drive.
- Isolation Devices: Due to the MD-10's rigid machining and internal damping, additional mass coupling or isolation devices (like cones) are not deemed necessary. If aftermarket isolation devices are used, ensure they do not permanently affix to the chassis or require a breach of the external chassis, as this will void the warranty.
- Multiple Digital Outputs: The MD-10 can drive up to four different digital-to-analog converters simultaneously.
- CD Singles: The MD-10 is capable of playing CD singles.
Maintenance Features:
The MD-10 is built for durability and requires minimal maintenance.
- Cleaning: For excessive dirt, clean the lens assembly with a camera lens brush made of soft material (e.g., camel hair). The acrylic top plate and dust cover should be cleaned with the provided polishing kit, following its directions.
- Remote Control Battery: Change batteries when the remote control no longer responds correctly. Remove the four socketcap screws from the back, remove the back plate, replace batteries (observing polarity), and reassemble.
- Fuse Replacement: If the unit does not power up, check the fuse. The fuse holder is located on the back panel, labeled "FUSE." Turn it counter-clockwise to remove. The MD-10 uses a 1 amp fast-blow fuse at 115V and a .5 amp fast-blow fuse at 220V. Use only the specified fuse. If the unit continuously blows fuses, contact your Krell dealer or distributor.
- Service: The MD-10 has a limited warranty: three years parts and labor on transport-related parts, and five years parts and labor on electronic parts. The warranty is valid only in the country of original shipment and at the factory. Do not return the unit for service without first obtaining a Return Authorization number from Krell. Unauthorized disassembly, updates, or modifications will void the warranty.
