The NESCAFÉ® Dolce Gusto® Piccolo XS is a compact, single-serve coffee machine designed for household use, offering a variety of hot and cold beverages. It is manufactured by KRUPS and is intended for domestic use at altitudes below 3400m.
Function Description:
The Piccolo XS operates by using NESCAFÉ® Dolce Gusto® capsules to prepare beverages. Users insert a capsule into the capsule holder, close the locking handle, and then use a selection lever to dispense either hot or cold water through the capsule. The machine automatically heats up when the capsule holder is removed and inserted, indicated by a blinking red light that turns steady green when ready. For multi-capsule beverages like Cappuccino, the process involves inserting and dispensing from multiple capsules sequentially. The machine features an "ECO-MODE" which activates after 1 minute of non-usage following an extraction, or 5 minutes upon switch-on if no extraction has occurred, consuming 0.27 Wh in this mode.
Important Technical Specifications:
- Power Supply: 220-240 V, 50/60 Hz, 1340–1600 W
- Pressure: Max. 15 bar
- Water Tank Capacity: 0.8 L
- Weight: Approximately 2 kg
- Operating Temperature Range: 5-45 °C (41-113 °F)
- Dimensions (approximate): A = 13.60 cm, B = 27.60 cm, C = 26.60 cm (specific dimensions for height, width, depth are not explicitly labeled but are implied by A, B, C).
- Safety Features: The capsule holder is equipped with a permanent magnet, requiring caution near magnetic-sensitive items. The machine will not operate without the capsule holder inserted. For machines with a locking handle, scalding may occur if the handle is opened during brewing cycles, and it should not be pulled up until the lights stop flashing.
Usage Features:
- First Use: Before first use, the machine requires a rinsing cycle. This involves filling the water tank, inserting a rinsing tool into the capsule holder, placing an empty container under the coffee outlet, and then running both cold and hot water cycles.
- Beverage Preparation:
- Drip Tray Adjustment: The drip tray can be adjusted to accommodate different cup sizes.
- Capsule Insertion: Capsules are inserted into the capsule holder, which is then placed back into the machine.
- Selection Lever: A selection lever allows users to choose between hot or cold water dispense. The duration of dispense is controlled manually by the user, who pushes the lever to the desired position (HOT or COLD) and then returns it to the "STOP" position once the desired beverage level is reached.
- Indicator Light: The indicator light signals machine status: blinking red during heating (approx. 40 seconds), steady green when ready, and blinking red for about 5 seconds after preparation (during which the locking handle should not be opened). An orange light indicates descaling is needed.
- Beverage Examples: The manual provides examples for Espresso (single capsule, 15s dispense), Cappuccino (two capsules, 30s + 10s dispense), Chococino (two capsules, 20s + 20s dispense), and Cappuccino Ice (two capsules, 25s + 15s dispense), with recommended volumes.
- Safety Recommendations:
- Always use fresh drinking water in the tank.
- Never add hot water to the water tank.
- Keep the machine upright.
- Do not open the locking handle immediately after preparation while the indicator light is blinking red.
- Avoid touching the plug with wet hands.
- Do not touch the used capsule immediately after preparation due to hot surfaces.
- Do not touch the injector with fingers.
- If unused for more than 2 days, empty, rinse, and refill the water tank, and perform a rinse cycle before reuse.
Maintenance Features:
- Cleaning:
- Water Tank: Rinse and clean with a food-safe brush and washing-up liquid. It is not dishwasher-proof.
- Drip Tray and Rinsing Tool: Rinse with fresh drinking water, clean with a food-safe brush, or wash in a dishwasher.
- Capsule Holder: Clean both sides with washing-up liquid and fresh drinking water, or wash in a dishwasher. Dry it afterwards.
- Machine Head/Injector Area: Clean with a clean, soft, damp cloth.
- General Cleaning: Unplug the machine and clean with a soft, damp cloth, then dry with a soft, dry cloth.
- Descaling:
- Frequency: At least every 3-4 months, or when the indicator light turns orange, beverages come out slower, or are cooler than usual.
- Procedure: Use NESCAFÉ® Dolce Gusto® liquid descaler (vinegar should not be used). Mix 0.5 liter of fresh drinking water with descaler. Remove any water from the tank, pour in the descaling solution, and insert the tank. Insert the rinsing tool into the capsule holder, close the locking handle, remove the drip tray, and place a large empty container under the coffee outlet. Run the machine in the "HOT" position until the water tank is empty, then return the lever to "STOP". Empty and clean the container and water tank, then refill with fresh drinking water. Run another "HOT" rinse cycle until the tank is empty. Repeat the process with a "COLD" rinse cycle. Finally, remove the rinsing tool, clean the capsule holder, and reinsert it. Clean the machine with a soft damp cloth.
- Troubleshooting: The manual provides guidance for common issues such as the indicator light turning orange (descaling needed), no liquid coming out (empty water tank, blocked capsule, or blocked injector), machine not switching on (power plug check, hotline contact), beverage splashing (clean injector area), and slow beverage flow (try another capsule, descaling needed). For a blocked injector, a cleaning needle (provided) is used to clear the blockage, with a warning to keep it out of reach of children and not to touch the injector with fingers.
