This document describes the KRUPS XP52 Automatic espresso machine, a device designed for domestic use to prepare espresso, cappuccino, and latte. The machine is equipped with a 15-bar pump, ensuring optimal pressure for coffee extraction. Its compact dimensions (H. 300 mm, L. 230 mm, P. 280 mm) and 1450 W power make it a suitable addition to any kitchen.
Function Description:
The KRUPS XP52 Automatic is designed to deliver a rich and aromatic espresso experience. It features a unique filter holder that incorporates three exclusive systems:
- KTS (Krups Tamping System): This system automatically and optimally tamps the espresso ground coffee as the filter holder is positioned, ensuring consistent extraction and flavor.
- Grounds Ejection System: After brewing, the machine facilitates the easy ejection of used coffee grounds or pods, making cleanup simple and mess-free.
- Pod Compatibility: The filter holder is compatible with both ground coffee (for 1 or 2 cups) and various types of pods, including E.S.E. (Easy Serving Espresso) pods and soft pods.
The machine also includes a steam function for frothing milk, allowing users to prepare cappuccinos and lattes. An auto-cappuccino accessory (sold separately) further simplifies the milk frothing process.

Usage Features:
The XP52 Automatic offers several features to enhance the user experience:
- Control Panel: The control panel includes an on/off switch (e1), a 1-cup button (e2), a 2-cups button (e3), and a steam preheating position (e4). A steam production wheel (f) controls the steam function.
- Pre-infusion System: Before each coffee preparation, the machine pre-infuses the coffee for 3 seconds, stops for 3 seconds, and then continues the cycle until the end of preparation. This process helps to release all the coffee aromas.
- Preheating Accessories: For optimal results, it is recommended to preheat the filter holder and cups without ground coffee. This involves running hot water through the filter holder and into the cups before brewing.
- Individual Water Volume Programming: Users can customize the pre-programmed amount of water (factory setting is 50 ml per cup) for 1 or 2 cups. This allows for personalized espresso strength.
- Claris Aqua Filter System Compatibility: The machine is compatible with the Claris Aqua Filter System cartridge (reference: F088), which helps to prolong the appliance's life by filtering water and reducing limescale buildup. The cartridge should be replaced every 2-3 months with daily use.
- Ground Coffee Usage: For intense flavor, freshly ground special espresso coffee is recommended. Users should not overfill the filter holder and should use the measuring spoon for accurate dosing (1 spoon for 1 cup, 2 spoons for 2 cups). The coffee is automatically tamped by the KTS system.
- Pod Usage: The machine supports E.S.E. pods (44 mm diameter, 7g coffee) for "ristretto" espressos and soft pods (60 mm diameter). When using pods, ensure the paper is fully inside the filter holder to prevent leaks.
- Milk Frothing: The steam nozzle (k) is used to froth milk for cappuccinos and lattes. The process involves preheating the steam circuit, immersing the nozzle in cold milk, and controlling steam production with the wheel. The auto-cappuccino accessory (l) simplifies this process with a dual-position nozzle and a pipe that can be immersed directly into a milk carton.
Maintenance Features:
Regular cleaning and maintenance are essential for the longevity and optimal performance of the XP52 Automatic.
- General Cleaning: The exterior of the appliance should be cleaned with a damp cloth. The water tank should be emptied after each use and rinsed regularly.
- Drip Tray: The drip tray (j) should be emptied after each use, especially after multiple espressos (approximately every 7-8 coffees). It can be cleaned with water and a mild washing-up liquid.
- Percolation Head and Filter Holder: These parts (g and h) should be cleaned after each use. The percolation head can be wiped with a damp cloth, and the filter holder should be cleaned under running water with mild washing-up liquid. For thorough cleaning, the filter holder can be dismantled, and the grounds ejection system can be activated multiple times during rinsing. The percolation head grid can be unscrewed and cleaned if heavily clogged.
- Steam Nozzle: The steam nozzle (k) consists of two parts (plastic support and metal cylinder) that should be dismantled and cleaned with tap water and mild washing-up liquid after each use. It's important to clean the nozzle after every use to prevent milk from drying inside.
- Auto-Cappuccino Accessory: This accessory (l) can be dismantled into four parts for thorough cleaning with water, mild washing-up liquid, and a small brush.
- Descaling: Regular descaling is crucial to prevent damage and maintain performance. The manual recommends using commercial white vinegar or citric/sulfamic acid, or the KRUPS descaling accessory (reference: F054). The frequency of descaling depends on water hardness and usage, ranging from once a year for soft water and low usage to monthly for very hard water and high usage. The descaling process involves using a descaling solution in the water tank and running it through both the coffee and steam circuits, followed by 2-3 rinsing cycles with clear water.
- Dishwasher Safety: Accessories should not be washed in the dishwasher.
