For first time use, or after a long period without use,
adjust wrench up and down a few time to distribute
lubricant throughout the mechanism.
Tighten in a slow and controlled manner and stop
applying pressure immediately the required setting
has been reached. Tightening too quickly will result
in an inaccurate final torque figure.
Take care to stop applying further torque once the
desired setting has been reached. Over-torqueing
can damage the wrench.
After using the wrench, unlock and turn the adjuster
to the lowest setting for storage. Take care not to turn
the adjuster lower that the minimum torque setting or
the mechanism may be damaged.
Never use the torque wrench to tighten a fastener to
a higher torque than the maximum torque setting.
Take care of the torque wrench and keep it clean; do
not store in areas of high temperature or humidity.

Overview

This document describes a dual-scale torque wrench, model 1342, with a 3/8" drive. It provides comprehensive information on its function, technical specifications, usage, maintenance, and safety precautions.

Function Description:

The torque wrench is designed for tightening fasteners to a precise torque setting, preventing over-tightening which can damage the fastener or the component. It features a dual scale, allowing users to work with both Newton-meters (Nm) and Foot-pounds (Ft/Lbs). The wrench provides a tactile and audible click when the desired torque is reached, signaling the user to stop applying pressure.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Model: 1342
  • Drive Size: 3/8"D
  • Primary Scale (Torque Range): 20-110 Nm
  • Secondary Scale (Torque Range): 14.8-81.1 Ft/Lbs
  • Repair Kits Available: Part No. 2731
  • Conformance: Manufactured in accordance with ISO 6789-1. A Certificate of Conformance is supplied, indicating the wrench was tested for accuracy by the manufacturer.

Usage Features:

  • Setting the Torque: When setting the wrench, always wind up to the desired setting, not down to it. For example, if the wrench was previously set at 150Nm and you need to set it to 50Nm, you should first return it to less than 50Nm, then adjust up to 50Nm. This ensures the setting is correct.
  • First Use/After Long Periods: Before initial use or after a long period of inactivity, adjust the wrench up and down a few times to distribute lubricant throughout the mechanism, ensuring smooth operation and accuracy.
  • Tightening Procedure: Tighten fasteners in a slow and controlled manner. Stop applying pressure immediately once the required setting has been reached. Tightening too quickly can lead to inaccurate torque readings.
  • Stopping Torque Application: It is crucial to stop applying further torque once the desired setting has been reached to prevent over-torqueing, which can damage the wrench and the fastener.
  • Storage: After use, unlock the adjuster and turn it to the lowest setting for storage. Be careful not to turn the adjuster lower than the minimum torque setting, as this can damage the internal mechanism.
  • Fastener Patterns: When tightening multiple nuts or bolts on an assembly (e.g., a cylinder head), tighten each fastener a little at a time in turn until the specified torque is reached. Always refer to the manufacturer's documentation for specific tightening patterns or orders.
  • Temperature Conditions: The wrench should not be used in serious hot or cold conditions (outside 0°C to 50°C), as this can affect its accuracy.
  • Calibration: Torque wrenches are precision tools and should be regularly calibrated. The frequency of calibration varies, but a good guide for an average automotive workshop is every two years.
  • Safety Precautions:
    • Always follow the vehicle manufacturer's specifications for torque settings.
    • Study any additional information regarding special conditions, such as whether the fixing should be applied dry or lubricated.
    • Never use the torque wrench to tighten a fastener beyond its maximum torque setting. If a higher torque is needed, use an alternative torque wrench with the correct capacity.
    • Never use an extension bar with the wrench.
    • Never use a length of pipe to extend the handle of the wrench.
    • Never use the wrench to break a bolt (undoing) or as a breaker bar.
    • Never use torque wrenches to undo fixings.
    • Never drop or throw the wrench, as it is a precision tool.

Maintenance Features:

  • Cleanliness: Keep the torque wrench clean and maintain it in a dry environment. Avoid storing it in areas of high temperature or humidity.
  • Load Release: Always release the torque after use.
  • Storage Case: Store the torque wrench in the case in which it was provided to protect it from damage.
  • Preventing Malfunction:
    • Avoid dropping the torque wrench.
    • Do not overload the recommended torque.
    • Do not use the torque wrench for a long period of time without proper storage and care.
    • Do not leave the torque wrench on a set torque for extended periods, as this can damage the internal load mechanism and make it inaccurate. Always adjust to the lowest torque setting (but not below) before storage.

Warranty and Registration:

The product comes with a one-year warranty from the date of purchase. Users are encouraged to register their purchase date online at www.lasertools.co.uk/product-registration. Registration requires providing your name, address, retailer's name and town, date of purchase (receipt required), part number, and serial number (found on the Certificate of Conformance). For issues related to faulty materials or workmanship, contact the service department directly at +44 (0) 1926 818186. Normal wear and tear, consumable items, and abuse are excluded from the guarantee.
