ENGINE PROBLEMS (Continued)
SYMPTOM CAUSE REMEDY
Starter Motor Turns But Will Not Pinion gear teeth broken Repair starter. See your authorized.
Fly wheel gear teeth broken Repair. See your authorized.
Starter pinion gear not engaging Pinion shift mechanism "jammed" or
flywheel ring gear malfunctioning.
See your authorized dealer.
Engine Cranks Slowly Battery or starter cable connections Clean and tighten connections.
loose or corroded
Battery cable damaged or broken Inspect and replace cables.
internally
Batteries discharged or will not Recharge or replace both batteries.
hold a charge
Wrong oil for low ambient Drain and refill with proper weight oil.
temperature Change oil filter.
Dirty connections at battery Clean battery posts and cable ends.
or starter Also clean connections at starter and
start relay.
Starter motor faulty Replace starter motor.
Batteries not charging Check specific gravity of batteries.
Check alternator output. Check
alternator belt tension. If batteries
are to be replaced, replace both
batteries.
Engine Surges or Stalls Frequently Air entering suction side of Check fuel filter for air bubble.
fuel system Tighten fittings.
Fuel tank vent clogged Remove cap and listen for air
entering tank rapidly.
Air filter element restricted Clean or replace filter element.
Fuel pump faulty Repair or replace pump.
Air filter element restricted Clean or replace filter element.
Injection pump faulty See your authorized dealer.
Injection nozzle(s) faulty See your authorized dealer.
Erratic Engine or Poor Slow Speed Air entering suction side of fuel Check fuel filter for air bubble.
Operation system Tighten fittings.
Fuel tank vent clogged Remove cap and listen for air
entering tank rapidly.
Air filter element restricted Clean or replace filter element.
Fuel pump faulty Repair or replace pump.
Air filter element restricted Clean or replace filter element.
Injection pump faulty See your authorized dealer.
Injection nozzle(s) faulty See your authorized dealer.
Slow idle speed set too low Check for worn or loose speed
control linkage and reset slow idle.
Incorrect valve clearance Adjust clearance.
Leaking head gasket Replace head.
