The Leica Noctivid binoculars are designed for curious observers and nature lovers, offering an enhanced viewing experience. These binoculars are built with a hermetically sealed, nitrogen-filled magnesium housing, making them waterproof to a depth of 5 meters. This robust construction ensures that the binoculars can be used outdoors without concern for getting wet, and the nitrogen filling prevents internal condensation from forming on the optics.
Function Description
The primary function of the Leica Noctivid binoculars is to provide clear and magnified views of distant objects. The optical system is designed to deliver bright and sharp images, making every observation exciting. The binoculars feature a central focusing unit (3) for adjusting focus on objects at varying distances. This unit also integrates a diopter setting feature to compensate for differences in eyesight between the left and right eyes.
Usage Features
To prepare the binoculars for use, several adjustments can be made:
- Attaching the Carrying Strap and Eyepiece Cap: The carrying strap and eyepiece cap can be attached to the binoculars. If you wish to attach the eyepiece cap to the carrying strap, this must be done at the same time as attaching the carrying strap to the binoculars.
- Mounting the Lens Caps: Before fitting the lens caps, adapter rings need to be pushed over the lenses. Ensure that the recesses in the adapters point towards the body and touch the lower bridge of the binoculars, lying flush against the front of the rubber coating. The actual lens caps can then be attached by pushing their elongated tabs through the matching opening on the adapter rings. The caps will click into the housing of the lenses, covering them.
- Adjusting the Eyecups (1): The eyecups are adjustable by turning them and will securely lock in the selected position.
- For use with eyeglasses, turn the eyecups clockwise to the end position (Figure A).
- For viewing without eyeglasses, turn them counter-clockwise. There are three setting options (Figures B, C) to adjust to your pupil positions.
- The eyecups can also be removed for thorough cleaning. They have a loss protection lock; to unlock, turn them counter-clockwise a little further past their fully extended position (Figure C) and move back down slightly. The eyecups can then be removed (Figure D).
- Adjusting the Interocular Distance: The interocular distance is adjusted by moving the binoculars on the pivot axis. The goal is to merge the right-hand and left-hand fields of view into one circular image.
- Focusing and Diopter Adjustment:
- To set the diopter, first focus on a specific object using only your left eye. Remember this object and do not change your position.
- Next, pull the central focusing unit's wheel up slightly (Figure B).
- Then, focus on the same object using only your right eye.
- Finally, push the wheel back down to lock your diopter setting. This setting is typically only necessary once per user.
- Scale Reading: Your personal diopter setting is visible in the scale window on top of the central focusing unit. The increment between two long lines on the scale represents approximately one diopter difference between the left and right eye. If multiple users share the binoculars and change settings, the initially determined scale value makes readjusting simple.
Maintenance Features
The Leica Noctivid binoculars require minimal special care:
- Cleaning Coarse Dirt: Coarse dirt particles, such as sand, can be removed using a soft brush or by simply blowing them off.
- Cleaning Lenses and Eyepieces: Fingerprints and other smudges on lenses and eyepieces can be removed with a soft, clean chamois or a lint-free cloth.
- Rinsing: In cases of severe dirt, such as on the eyecups, the binoculars can be rinsed under running water. Salt water should also be rinsed away immediately.
- Removing Water Stains: Water stains on the lenses and eyepieces are best removed with a moist cloth.
- Drying Internal Moisture: Any moisture inside the focusing unit (visible in the scale window) will dry faster if the central focusing unit's wheel (3) is unlocked.
- Important Cleaning Note: Do not use alcohol or chemical cleaning solutions on the binoculars. When wiping heavily soiled lens surfaces, avoid applying pressure. While the lenses have a highly scratch-resistant coating, sand or salt crystals on the lens may still cause permanent damage if pressure is applied during cleaning.
Important Health Warning:
- Never look directly at the sun or other bright sources of light through your binoculars. Failure to comply may lead to serious damage to your eyes.
- Do not use your binoculars while walking, as you might not see obstacles in your path.
