Overview

The Lennox G23 Series Gas Furnace is a residential heating appliance designed to provide warmth and comfort to your home. It operates by burning natural gas or propane to generate heat, which is then distributed throughout your living space via a duct system. The furnace is equipped with a SureLight ignition system, eliminating the need for manual lighting of the burners. When the thermostat calls for heat, the ignitor automatically lights the burners, ensuring efficient and reliable operation.

Function Description:

The primary function of the G23 Series Gas Furnace is to convert fuel gas into heat energy and then circulate that heat throughout your home. Combustion air is drawn into the unit by a combustion air blower, mixed with gas from the gas valve and manifold, and ignited by the SureLight ignition system. The resulting hot gases pass through a Duralok™ heat exchanger assembly, transferring heat to the circulating air without mixing with it. A blower motor then pushes this heated air through your home's ductwork. The combustion byproducts are safely vented out of your home through a vent pipe connection. A combustion air proving (pressure) switch monitors the airflow to ensure proper and safe operation. The unit is controlled by a blower control board and a control box, which manage the various components to maintain desired indoor temperatures.

Usage Features:

The G23 Series Gas Furnace is designed for user convenience and safety. To operate the furnace, you simply set your thermostat to the desired temperature. The SureLight ignition system handles the burner ignition automatically whenever heat is required. The furnace is equipped with an upper access panel and a blower access panel for maintenance and inspection. It is crucial to ensure that the blower door is securely in place when the blower and burners are operating to prevent the escape of gas fumes, which could contain carbon monoxide.

For your safety, it is important to be aware of the following:

  • Gas Odor: If you smell gas, do not attempt to light any appliance, extinguish open flames, avoid electrical switches, and do not use any phone in your building. Immediately contact your gas supplier or the fire department.
  • Thermostat Setting: Do not set the thermostat below 60°F (16°C) in heating mode, as this can reduce the number of heating cycles and potentially damage the unit.
  • Water Damage: If any part of the furnace has been under water, do not use it. A qualified service technician must inspect and replace any affected parts.
  • Combustible Materials: Keep the furnace area clear of gasoline and other flammable vapors and liquids.
  • Airflow: Do not obstruct the airflow to the unit. It requires an unobstructed flow of combustion and ventilating air.
  • Return Air: Do not draw return air from a room where the furnace or other gas appliances are installed, as this can create negative pressure and pull flue products back into the room, leading to incomplete combustion and the formation of carbon monoxide.
  • Carbon Monoxide: Lennox recommends the use of a carbon monoxide detector in your home, even if you do not own gas appliances, as carbon monoxide is an invisible, odorless, and toxic gas that can cause serious health issues.

Maintenance Features:

Regular maintenance is critical for the safe and satisfactory operation of your G23 Series Gas Furnace. Lennox strongly recommends an annual inspection and maintenance by a qualified service technician. While some basic tasks can be performed by the homeowner, any complex service or repairs should be handled by a qualified installer, service agency, or gas supplier using factory-specified and approved parts.

Key maintenance features and recommendations include:

  • Filters: The furnace requires a filter to be in place whenever it is in operation. The filter may be located within the unit (optional kit) or in a return air grille. Filters should be inspected monthly and cleaned as necessary to ensure proper furnace operation. Foam filters used inside the G23 series unit can be cleaned with cold water and mild soap, then sprayed with a filter handicoater (available from your Lennox dealer) before reinstallation.
  • Seasonal Inspections: A qualified service technician should inspect the complete system each season (heating and cooling). This includes checking the furnace venting system, draft hood, vent cap, heat exchanger, and burners for corrosion, deterioration, or debris. They will also inspect the furnace's physical support, blower wheel, and burner flames.
  • Venting System: Annually, the venting system should be inspected for proper placement, physical soundness, absence of holes, corrosion, or blockage.
  • Burners: Burners should be inspected for rust, dirt, or signs of water. During operation, the burner flame should be predominantly blue and strong in appearance. A qualified technician should periodically check the burner flame to ensure proper operation.
  • Blower: The blower wheel should be checked and cleaned for debris. The blower motor is pre-lubricated for extended bearing life and does not require further lubrication.
  • Unit Appearance: The unit should be inspected for rust, dirt, signs of water, or damaged wires and components.
  • Blower Access Door: Ensure the blower access door is properly in place and provides a seal between the return air and the room where the furnace is installed.
  • Return Air Duct: Verify that the return air duct is properly attached and provides an air seal to the unit.
  • Fresh Air Grilles and Louvers: These must be open and unobstructed to provide adequate combustion air.

Before attempting any service or maintenance, always turn off the electrical power to the unit at the disconnect switch. If you discover any unusual sounds, odors, visible signs of malfunction (e.g., condensate, burnt components, dirt/rust on vent pipe), or experience symptoms of carbon monoxide exposure (headache, nausea, fatigue, dizziness), shut down the unit and contact an independent Lennox dealer for an inspection. Your vigilance in early detection of problems can prevent personal injury or property damage.
