The AMS 348i SSI is an optical laser measurement system designed for precise distance measurement in industrial applications. It calculates distances to both fixed and moving system parts based on the propagation time of radiated light. A laser diode emits light that is reflected by a reflector back to the receiving element of the system. This principle allows for high absolute measurement accuracy and fast response times, making it suitable for position control applications.
Function Description
The AMS 348i SSI system measures distances up to 300 meters against a specified reflective tape. It offers various interfaces, including PROFINET and SSI, to integrate into different control systems. The device can operate in standalone mode or as part of a PROFINET network, supporting both star and linear topologies.
Key functionalities include:
- Distance Measurement: Calculates the distance to a reflector using the time-of-flight principle.
- Position Control: Designed for applications requiring high absolute measurement accuracy and fast response times, such as positioning of automated plant components, high-bay storage devices, gantry crane bridges, and elevators.
- PROFINET Interface: Supports PROFINET-RT (Real Time) communication with a transmission rate of up to 100 Mbit/s (100 Base TX/FX), full duplex, and auto-negotiation/auto-crossover. It complies with Conformance Class B (CC-B), offering cyclical RT communication, acyclic TCP/IP communication, alarms/diagnosis, automatic address assignment, I&M 0-4 functionality, neighborhood detection, FAST Ethernet 100 Base-TX, and convenient device exchange.
- SSI Interface: Provides a Synchronous Serial Interface for data transmission, based on differential RS 422. The position value is transmitted synchronously with a clock cycle, starting with the most significant bit (MSB).
- Configurable I/O: Features two freely programmable switching inputs/outputs (I/O 1 and I/O 2) for application-specific adaptations. These can be configured as inputs or outputs and assigned various functions like position limit values, velocity, intensity (ATT), temperature (TMP), laser status (LSR), plausibility (PLB), or hardware error (ERR).
- Display and Control Panel: Equipped with a monochromatic graphical display (128 x 64 pixels) and four control buttons for navigation and parameter adjustment. It shows status, warning, error messages, switching input/output status, a bar graph for received signal level, and the measurement value.
- Parameter Management: Parameters can be configured via the display or through the GSDML file in a PROFINET controller. When operating on PROFINET, the controller manages device settings, overwriting any local display changes upon reconnection.
- Error Handling: Provides mechanisms to handle temporary errors in value/velocity calculation, such as light beam interruption or exceeding traverse rate. It can output the last valid measurement value for a configured time or activate an error display.

Usage Features
- Mounting: The device and reflector are mounted on mutually opposing, plane-parallel, flat walls. Alignment is crucial, ensuring an unobstructed line-of-sight and the laser light spot hitting the center of the reflector. Optional mounting brackets and deflector units are available for specific installation needs.
- Reflectors: Requires Leuze-specified reflective tapes (self-adhesive, on carrier plate, or heated variants). Reflectors must be mounted at a slight incline to avoid surface reflections.
- Electrical Connection: Uses M12 connectors for voltage supply (PWR), PROFINET (BUS IN/OUT), and SSI. Functional earth (FE) connection is essential for unimpaired operation and EMC.
- Display Operation: The display provides real-time status and measurement data. Users can navigate menus using up/down buttons and confirm/enter values with the ENTER button. Parameter changes via the display are possible when "parameter enable" is activated, but these are overwritten by the PROFINET controller if connected.
- Language Selection: Supports multiple display languages (German, English, Spanish, French, Italian).
- Heating Control: Models with integrated heating (designated with "H") offer controlled heating to prevent condensation, with configurable switch-on/off temperature ranges.
- Laser Safety: Class 2 laser product. Users must avoid staring into the beam or reflections and adhere to all laser safety regulations.
Maintenance Features
- General Maintenance: Under normal use, the device requires no maintenance by the operator.
- Cleaning: In case of dust build-up or "ATT" warning, clean the device and reflector with a soft cloth and a commercially available glass cleaner. Avoid solvents containing acetone.
- Repairs and Servicing: Access to or changes on the device, except as described in the manual, are not authorized. The device must not be opened, as this voids the guarantee. Repairs must only be performed by Leuze electronic GmbH + Co. KG.
- Diagnostics: The device offers event-related and state-related diagnostics, including process alarms, diagnostic alarms, maintenance alarms, and manufacturer-specific diagnostics. Status messages are stored in a ring memory.
- Troubleshooting: The manual provides a comprehensive guide to general causes of errors (e.g., PWR LED status, hardware errors, light beam interruption) and interface errors (e.g., BUS LED status, incorrect wiring, communication errors).
- Disassembly and Disposal: For later reuse, the device should be packed for protection. Electrical scrap must be disposed of according to local regulations.
