Overview

This document describes the installation, features, and warranty information for Leviton Single Pole and 3-Way Switches, which are treated with an antimicrobial material.

Function Description:

The Leviton Single Pole Switch (Cat. No. A1221) and 3-Way Switch (Cat. No. A1223) are electrical wiring devices designed to control lighting or other electrical loads.

  • Single Pole Switch: This type of switch is used to control a light fixture or outlet from a single location. It has two terminals for connecting the hot (line) and load wires, and typically a ground terminal. When the switch is in the "on" position, it completes the circuit, allowing electricity to flow to the connected device. When in the "off" position, it breaks the circuit, stopping the flow of electricity. The provided wiring diagram for the Single Pole Switch shows connections for Line Hot (Black), Load (Charge), Neutral (White), and Ground (Green Screw).
  • 3-Way Switch: This type of switch is used in pairs to control a single light fixture or outlet from two different locations. Each 3-way switch has three terminals: a common terminal, and two traveler terminals. The common terminal connects to either the line hot or the load, while the traveler terminals connect to the traveler wires that run between the two 3-way switches. When either switch is toggled, it changes the path of electricity, allowing the light to be turned on or off from either location. The provided wiring diagram for the 3-Way Switch shows connections for Common Terminal (Black screw), Travelers (Brass screw), Line Hot (Black), and Ground (Green Screw).

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Rated Voltage: Both the Single Pole Switch (Cat. No. A1221) and the 3-Way Switch (Cat. No. A1223) are rated for 20A-120/277VAC. This indicates they can handle a maximum current of 20 amperes and are compatible with electrical systems operating at either 120 volts or 277 volts alternating current.
  • Wiring Compatibility:
    • Side Wire: Accepts up to #12 AWG copper or copper-clad wire. Insulation removal for side wiring is approximately 3/4" (1.9 cm). Wires should be looped clockwise 3/4 turn around terminal screws.
    • Back Wire: Accepts up to #10 AWG copper or copper-clad wire. Insulation removal for back wiring is approximately 1/2" (1.3 cm). Wires are inserted straight under clamps next to terminal screws.
  • Material: The product is treated with an antimicrobial material.

Usage Features:

  • Antimicrobial Treatment: A key feature of these switches is their antimicrobial treatment. This material provides an added layer of cleanliness and durability. It is designed to protect the device from discoloration, staining, deterioration, and corrosion caused by mold, mildew, fungi, and odor-causing bacteria. This feature is particularly beneficial in environments where hygiene is a concern.
  • Installation Flexibility: The switches offer two wiring methods:
    • Side Wiring: Wires are looped around terminal screws.
    • Back Wiring: Wires are inserted straight under clamps.
    • Both methods require specific insulation removal lengths and proper tightening of terminal screws to the appropriate torque value (which can be found on Leviton.com/torquevalue).
  • Safety Warnings: The manual emphasizes critical safety precautions:
    • Always turn off power at the circuit breaker or fuse and test that power is off before wiring to avoid fire, shock, or death.
    • Installation must comply with appropriate electrical codes and regulations.
    • Consult an electrician if unsure about any part of the instructions.
    • Use only copper or copper-clad wire.
  • Product Protection: Specific warnings are given to prevent damage to the antimicrobial properties and the device itself:
    • Do not use disinfecting products, including foggers, sprays, or other types of atomized cleaning agents.
    • Do not spray liquid onto the product.

Maintenance Features:

  • Cleaning: For general cleaning, the manual recommends using a damp cloth with mild soap.
  • Antimicrobial Material Care: To maintain the effectiveness of the antimicrobial treatment, standard daily proper cleaning procedures must be maintained.
  • Prohibited Treatments: To avoid negatively affecting the antimicrobial additive, users are explicitly instructed:
    • DO NOT WAX, PAINT, LACQUER, VARNISH, COAT OR ENGRAVE THIS PRODUCT.
  • Compatible Cleaning Chemicals: Testing has shown that the antimicrobial additive is not negatively affected by cleaning with the following chemicals:
    • Oxivir (0.5% Hydrogen Peroxide) solution
    • Virex (n-Alkyl Dimethyl Benzyl Ammonium Chloride)
    • Dispatch (Sodium Hypochlorite stabilized bleach solution)
    • Isopropyl Alcohol
  • Antimicrobial Testing Standard: The antimicrobial material has been tested according to the international standard JIS Z 2801:2000, indicating its compliance with recognized efficacy standards.

Warranty Information:

  • Limited 10 Year Warranty: Leviton provides a limited 10-year warranty to the original consumer purchaser, guaranteeing the product is free of defects in materials and workmanship under normal and proper use from the purchase date.
  • Remedy: Leviton's sole obligation under this warranty is to correct defects by repair or replacement, at its option.
  • Exclusions: The warranty explicitly excludes:
    • Labor for removal or reinstallation of the product.
    • Damage if the product is installed improperly, in an improper environment, overloaded, misused, opened, abused, altered, or not used under normal operating conditions or according to instructions.
    • There are no other or implied warranties of any kind, including merchantability and fitness for a particular purpose. If implied warranties are required by applicable jurisdiction, their duration is limited to ten years.
