Overview

This document is an installation and maintenance manual for an LG Single Packaged-Type Air Conditioner.

Function Description

The LG Single Packaged-Type Air Conditioner is an outdoor-mounted cooling unit designed for vertical condenser discharge. It can be installed at ground level or on a roof. The unit is intended for consumer use, providing air conditioning for spaces and is not a precision refrigeration system for special purposes like preserving foods or works of art. It operates with a pre-charged amount of Refrigerant 22.

Important Technical Specifications

  • Refrigerant: The unit is shipped with an operating charge of Refrigerant 22.
  • Drain Connection: A 3/4 inch male condensate drain connection is located on the evaporator section access panel. The drain line must be 3/4" pipe size, pitched 1/4" per foot for free drainage, trapped, and not connected to a closed drain system.
  • Electrical Power: The unit requires specific supply voltage as indicated on the nameplate. Voltage variation should remain within specified limits.
  • Over Current Protection: The branch circuit feeding the unit must be protected as shown on the unit rating plate.
  • Wiring: Low-voltage and high-voltage wiring holes are provided. New holes should not be punched unless resealed to be air- and watertight. Wiring must conform to local codes and the National Electrical Code.
  • Remote Controller: The wired remote controller should be installed about 5 feet (1.5 meters) above the floor in an area with good air circulation, away from direct sunlight, high humidity, drafts, hot/cold air from ducts, radiant heat, concealed pipes, chimneys, or uncontrolled areas. It features a seven-segment LED display.
  • Filters: The unit includes anti-bacteria and washable filters.

Usage Features

  • Installation Flexibility: Can be mounted at ground level or on a roof.
  • Airflow: Designed for vertical condenser discharge. Horizontal application units feature specific duct openings for horizontal airflow.
  • Operation Modes: Supports both heating (if equipped with an electric heater) and cooling modes.
  • Remote Control: Features a wired remote controller for setting temperature and operating modes.
  • Self-Diagnostics: The MAIN CONTROLLER performs internal self-diagnostics checks during power-up, identifying equipment components, configuring itself, and verifying proper functioning.

Maintenance Features

  • Filter Access: Filters are accessible by removing the evaporator fan access panel.
  • Washable Filters: Permanent type filters can be cleaned by washing with a mild detergent and water, then thoroughly drying before reinstallation.
  • Condenser Coil Cleaning: The condenser coil surface can be cleaned by stroking vertically (along the fins) with a soft bristled brush to remove dust and dirt. Vegetation should be kept away from the coil area.
  • Routine Maintenance (Owner): Owners can perform periodic maintenance such as cleaning air filters, unit cabinet, and condenser coil, and conducting general unit inspections.
  • Serviceman Maintenance (Cooling Season): Recommended annual checks by a qualified serviceman include inspecting filters, motors, drive system components, condenser coils, safety controls, electrical components and wiring, condensate drain, duct connections, mounting support, and overall unit condition.
  • Serviceman Maintenance (Heating Season): Inspections and service routines should be completed at the beginning of each heating season, including verifying tight electrical connections and intact wire insulation.
  • Safety Precautions: The manual emphasizes safety during maintenance, including disconnecting power before servicing, avoiding contact with moving parts, and not storing flammable materials near the unit.

Safety Precautions

The manual highlights critical safety precautions using "WARNING" and "CAUTION" symbols.

  • WARNING indicates the possibility of death or serious injury. Key warnings include:

    • Using a dedicated circuit breaker of the correct rating.
    • Contacting qualified personnel for electrical work.
    • Properly grounding the product.
    • Securing panels and control box covers.
    • Using specified wires.
    • Not installing, removing, or reinstalling the unit by oneself.
    • Being cautious during unpacking due to sharp edges.
    • Contacting a dealer or Authorized Service Center for installation.
    • Not installing on a defective stand.
    • Ensuring the installation area does not deteriorate with age.
    • Ensuring the power cable is not pulled or damaged.
    • Not placing anything on the power cable.
    • Not plugging/unplugging during operation.
    • Not touching the product with wet hands.
    • Not placing heaters or other appliances near the power cable.
    • Not allowing water into electrical parts.
    • Not storing or using flammable gas/combustibles near the product.
    • Turning off gas and ventilating if flammable gas leaks.
    • Turning off the breaker if strange sounds/smoke occur.
    • Stopping operation and closing windows during storms/hurricanes.
    • Not opening the panel during operation.
    • Contacting an Authorized Service Center if the product is soaked.
    • Being cautious that water does not enter the product.
    • Ventilating when operating with stoves.
    • Turning off main power for cleaning/maintenance.
    • Not exposing skin directly to cool air for long periods.
    • Not blocking air inlet/outlet.
    • Not stepping on outdoor units.
    • Not inserting hands or objects into air inlet/outlet during operation.
    • Not drinking drained water.
    • Using a firm stool/ladder for cleaning/maintenance.
    • Disconnecting power before removing access panels for service.
    • Bodily injury from high voltage electrical components if operating checks are performed with the unit operating without proper recognition of hazards.
  • CAUTION indicates the possibility of injury or damage to properties only. Key cautions include:

    • Checking gas (refrigerant) pressure after installation/repair.
    • Installing the drain hose properly to prevent water leakage.
    • Keeping the unit level during installation to avoid vibration/water leakage.
    • Not installing where noise/hot air could damage neighborhoods.
    • Not using people to lift/transport the product.
    • Not installing where exposed to sea wind (salt spray).
    • Not using pressures from the service manual to determine refrigerant charge; use the unit nameplate for correct charge and superheat charging or weighing the charge.
    • Locking the unit disconnect switch in the open position before servicing to prevent injury or death from electrical shock or contact with moving parts.
    • Not storing combustible materials, gasoline, or other flammable vapors/liquids near the unit to prevent explosion, injury, death, or equipment damage.

The manual also includes "NOTICE" for special notes, such as the requirement for spreader bars during hoisting, not drawing canvas taut between solid ducts, not operating without filters, and the importance of resealing new wiring holes.
