Overview

This document is an owner's manual for an LG Dishwasher, specifically models LDS5540ST/WW/BB and LDS5560ST/WW/BB. It provides comprehensive instructions for operation, care, and troubleshooting, ensuring users can effectively utilize and maintain their appliance.

Function Description:

The LG Dishwasher is designed to efficiently clean and dry dishes, offering various wash cycles and options to suit different soil levels and item types. It incorporates advanced technologies to enhance cleaning performance, energy efficiency, and user convenience. The core function is to automate the dishwashing process, reducing manual effort and ensuring hygienic cleaning.

Usage Features:

Loading and Capacity:

The dishwasher features a large capacity design, accommodating oversized items up to 14 inches high in the lower rack when the upper rack is raised. It offers flexible loading options with adjustable tines in both the upper and lower racks to fit various dish sizes and shapes. The lower rack is ideal for dinner plates, soup bowls, dishes, pots, pans, lids, and grill trays, with plates positioned vertically and facing the center. Pots, pans, and large bowls should be turned face down. The upper rack is designed for smaller or delicate items like small plates, cups, saucers, glasses, and dishwasher-safe plastic items, which should be positioned upside down. Fold-down cup racks provide support for extra cups or long-stemmed glasses. The silverware basket can be separated into three individual baskets for use in either rack, featuring separators to prevent scratching and tarnishing. Some models also include a cutlery rack for flatware and cooking utensils, with adjustable side trays to accommodate different sizes of items.

Wash Cycles:

The dishwasher offers a range of cycles to match different cleaning needs:

  • POWER SCRUB: For heavily and hard-soiled dishes, also helps reduce hard water spotting.
  • NORMAL: For normally soiled, everyday loads.
  • DELICATE: For effectively cleaning delicate items like fine china and stemware.
  • QUICK (LDS5540) / QUICK & DRY (LDS5560): Shortened cycles for recently used or lightly soiled dishes, with drying for LDS5560.
  • QUICK (LDS5560): A shortened wash cycle for recently used or lightly soiled loads, without drying.
  • RINSE ONLY: A quick rinse cycle for dishes not immediately washed, helping to soften dried-on residue and prevent odors. No detergent is used.
  • DUAL WASH: Washes upper and lower racks at different spray intensities (strong for lower, soft for upper by default), ideal for mixed loads. Users can customize spray intensities for both racks.
  • UPPER ONLY (LDS5540): For washing items placed only in the upper rack.

Cycle Options:

Users can select additional options to customize their wash:

  • SANITARY: A high-temperature rinse that sanitizes dishes and glassware, meeting NSF/ANSI Standard 184.
  • EXTRA DRY: Adds 60 minutes of extra drying time for better performance.
  • EXTRA RINSE: Adds an additional rinse to the cycle, which can help reduce hard water spotting.
  • DELAY START: Delays the start of a selected cycle from 1 to 19 hours in one-hour increments.
  • SPRAY (INTENSITY) (LDS5560): Allows selection of soft, medium, or strong spray intensity for the wash cycle.
  • HALF LOAD (LDS5560): For small loads, allowing users to select upper rack only or lower rack only to save energy.

Detergent and Rinse Aid Dispensing:

The dishwasher requires automatic dishwasher detergent, with the amount depending on the cycle, load size, and soil level. A prewash compartment is available for additional detergent if desired. Liquid rinse aid is strongly recommended to enhance drying performance, especially with the hybrid drying system that does not use a heating element. The rinse aid dispenser has an indicator to show when refilling is needed and an adjustable lever to control the amount dispensed, typically set to level 3.

Hybrid Drying System:

This system effectively dries dishes without a heating element, relying on retained heat from the wash and rinse cycles to create humidity. A fan then pulls moist air into a condensing duct in the door, where it cools and condenses into liquid, which is drained. This design contributes to energy efficiency.

Vario Spray System:

The water spray alternates between the upper and lower racks, directing full motor power to one rack at a time for concentrated cleaning.

Soft Food Grinder and Self-Cleaning Filter:

For optimal wash results, the dishwasher includes a built-in soft food grinder and a self-cleaning filter. The grinder breaks down soft food and residue into small particles that are then caught by the filter and washed down the drain. The self-cleaning filter continuously cleans the wash water as it circulates, separating residue.

Control and Display:

The control panel features a digital display showing the estimated cycle time and remaining operating time. Indicators for rinse aid level and child lock are also present. The Power button turns the dishwasher on and off. The dishwasher automatically powers off after a cycle or if no cycle is selected within four minutes. A chime sounds at the end of a cycle, and the display shows "END" before shutting off for safety and energy conservation.

Safety Features:

  • Child Lock: Prevents settings from being changed during a cycle by locking all buttons except the Power button.
  • Auto-Off: Automatically turns off the dishwasher if a cycle is not selected or the door is not closed within four minutes.
  • Door Safety: A safety device stops the dishwasher if the door is opened during operation. Users are cautioned about escaping steam when opening the door immediately after a cycle.
  • Power Failure Protection: In case of a power surge or outage, the display shows "PF" and the dishwasher powers off for safety.

Maintenance Features:

Keeping the Dishwasher Clean:

  • If the dishwasher will not be used for an extended period, run a Quick cycle without detergent, then clean the dishwasher to remove food debris and close the door.

Cleaning Metallic Parts:

  • Exterior and interior metallic parts can be cleaned with a damp cloth or sponge. A cloudy film on the stainless steel tub, often due to hard water, can be cleaned.

Cleaning Spray Arms:

  • Lower Spray Arm: Ensure water jet holes are not blocked. Remove by pulling up, clean, and replace by pushing down until it clips into place, ensuring it turns freely.
  • Upper Spray Arm: Pull the upper rack forward and check for blocked water jet holes. Remove by turning the nut on the bottom 1/8 turn counterclockwise and pulling down. After cleaning, press it up into place and turn the nut 1/8 turn clockwise to lock.
  • Top Spray Arm: Check for blocked water jet holes. If cleaning is necessary, use a screwdriver to release the retainer clip from the bracket, pull the spray arm out, clean, and then slide it back into place, ensuring the retainer clip engages.

Seasonal Maintenance and Storage:

  • Warmer Months: If absent for an extended period, close the water valve and unplug the power cord or turn off the circuit breaker.
  • Colder Months: If there's a possibility of freezing temperatures, winterize water supply lines and the dishwasher. This must be performed by experienced service personnel.

Troubleshooting (Smart Diagnosis™ System):

The dishwasher is equipped with a Smart Diagnosis™ system that can transmit data to a smartphone via the LG Smart Laundry & DW Application or to the LG call center. This feature assists in troubleshooting problems by providing diagnostic information. To activate, turn on the dishwasher, select a cycle, and then follow the instructions to transmit data by holding a smartphone near the speaker on the control panel while pressing specific buttons (Extra Rinse and Delay Start for LDS5540, or Sanitary for LDS5560). The display will show a countdown during transmission.
