DR Mallet Steam Loco, Sound
THE PROTOTYPE
In 1917, the Heeresfeldbahn (mili-
tary field railway) ordered a huge
meter gauge Mallet locomotive
from Henschel & Son. To distribu-
te the weight, a six-axle configu-
ration was chosen.
Later, the loco was sold to the
Königlich Bayerischen Staatsbah-
nen (Royal Bavarian State Rail-
way), where it was classified as
Gts 2x4/4 996. After formation of
the Deutsche Reichsbahn (DR or
East German Railways), the loco
was renumbered 99201. It was
used on the branch line from
Eichstätt to Kinding until this line
was regauged to standard gauge
in 1934.
