Overview

The SolidStep is a retractable step assembly designed to provide convenient and stable access to recreational vehicles (RVs) or trailers. It is engineered to be a robust and user-friendly solution for entry and exit, offering different configurations to suit various trailer designs and user needs. The system is available in multiple tread counts and sizes, including "SolidStep 2" and "SolidStep 3" (with or without lift assist), allowing for customization based on the specific floor height range of the trailer.

Function Description

The primary function of the SolidStep is to provide a secure and stable stepping surface for entering and exiting a trailer. Unlike traditional pull-out steps, the SolidStep deploys directly to the ground, offering a more stable and less bouncy experience. This direct-to-ground contact helps to eliminate the "diving" sensation often associated with suspended steps, enhancing safety and comfort for users.

The step assembly is designed to be stored vertically inside the doorframe when not in use, maintaining a clean exterior aesthetic and protecting the steps from road debris during travel. When needed, the steps can be easily released and extended to the ground. The system incorporates a transport lock mechanism to secure the steps in their stored position, preventing accidental deployment or movement while the trailer is in transit.

For models with "Lift Assist," the design incorporates features that reduce the effort required to deploy and retract the steps, making it easier for users with limited strength or mobility. This assist mechanism helps to counterbalance the weight of the steps, providing a smoother and less strenuous operation.

The SolidStep is adaptable to various floor heights, with different tread counts (Triple or Quad) and sizes (ranging from 26" to 36") to accommodate floor height ranges from 27"-36" for Triple steps and 35"-44" for Quad steps. This versatility ensures that the steps can be properly fitted to a wide array of RVs and trailers, providing an optimal stepping angle and ground contact.

Usage Features

The SolidStep is designed for ease of use, with several features that enhance its functionality and user experience.

Deployment: To deploy the steps, the user first disengages the transport lock. Once unlocked, the steps can be firmly grasped and pulled out from their vertical stored position, allowing them to extend downwards until they firmly rest on the ground. The design ensures a smooth and controlled deployment.

Storage: Storing the steps is equally straightforward. The user lifts the SolidStep assembly back into its upright, stored position within the doorframe. It is crucial to ensure that the transport lock engages properly to secure the steps for travel. This prevents the steps from inadvertently deploying or shifting during transit, which could cause damage or pose a safety hazard.

Leg Extension Adjustment: A key feature of the SolidStep is its adjustable leg extensions. These extensions are secured by a quick-release clevis pin, allowing for precise adjustments in 1-inch increments. This adjustability is vital for achieving the optimal stepping angle and ensuring that the steps are level and parallel to the ground, regardless of uneven terrain.

  • Extending the Inner Leg: To extend the inner leg, the quick-release clevis pin is removed from the tube and slot. The inner leg is then extended to the desired length, ensuring the steps are parallel to the ground and level. The clevis pin is then reinserted into the tube and the closest slot to secure the new position.
  • Retracting the Inner Leg: The process for retracting the inner leg is similar. The clevis pin is removed, the inner leg is retracted, and the clevis pin is reinserted into the appropriate slot. This flexibility allows users to adapt the steps to varying ground surfaces, ensuring a stable and safe entry/exit point every time.

Installation: The installation process is designed to be robust and secure. Before installation, it is important to verify the proper size of the SolidStep by measuring the frame-to-frame distance of the trailer door and rounding up to the nearest even number. The threshold-to-ground measurement is also critical for selecting the correct SolidStep size and tread count.

The assembly is placed inside the doorframe and centered. Initial fasteners are installed through access holes in the mounting plate. For wood flooring, #10-1 1/2" wood screws are used. For laminate flooring, #10-4" bolts are inserted through the mounting plate, the floor, and a backer plate, secured with plain washers, lock washers, and nuts.

Transport Lock Adjustment: The transport lock mechanism may require adjustment to ensure proper function. If the latching mechanism is not correctly aligned, the two bolts on both sides of the transport lock can be loosened, allowing up to 1/2" of side-to-side adjustment. Once the correct position is achieved, the bolts are tightened. It is recommended to test the functionality by shaking the step assembly to simulate road vibration and ensure the latch flanges do not scrape the doorframe. Minor adjustments may also involve loosening the original two fasteners in the hinge plate.

Securing the Hinge Plate: After adjusting the transport lock and with the steps in the upright stored position, the hinge plate is further secured to the trailer floor using eight additional fasteners. Depending on the flooring material, either #10-1 1/2" wood screws (for wood floors) or #10-1 1/2" self-tapping screws (for laminate floors) are used. Horizontal slots in the hinge plate allow for small adjustments to the step assembly's positioning in the doorway. Once all fasteners are in place, the step assembly is extended, and plastic caps are reinserted to cover the access holes in the mounting plate, providing a finished look.

Maintenance Features

The SolidStep is designed for durability and minimal maintenance, but regular checks ensure its longevity and safe operation.

Regular Inspection: Users should periodically inspect the step assembly for any signs of wear, damage, or loose fasteners. This includes checking the integrity of the steps themselves, the hinge points, the leg extensions, and the transport lock mechanism. Any components showing excessive wear or damage should be addressed promptly.

Lubrication: While not explicitly detailed in the provided manual, it is generally good practice for mechanical components like hinges and sliding parts to be kept clean and occasionally lubricated with a suitable dry lubricant to ensure smooth operation and prevent corrosion, especially in environments with high moisture or road salt exposure.

Cleaning: Keeping the steps clean from dirt, mud, and debris will prevent buildup that could hinder smooth operation or cause premature wear. A simple wash with soap and water is usually sufficient.

Transport Lock Functionality: The transport lock is a critical safety feature. Users should regularly test its functionality to ensure it engages and disengages smoothly and securely. If any issues are noted, the adjustment procedure outlined in the installation section should be followed to realign and tighten the mechanism. This prevents potential damage to the doorframe or step assembly during travel.

Fastener Integrity: All fasteners securing the hinge plate to the trailer floor should be checked periodically for tightness. Vibrations from travel can sometimes cause fasteners to loosen over time. Ensuring they remain tight is crucial for the stability and safety of the entire step assembly.

Plastic Caps: The plastic caps covering the access holes in the mounting plate serve to protect the fasteners and provide a clean appearance. Users should ensure these caps remain in place and replace them if they become lost or damaged.

By adhering to these usage and maintenance guidelines, users can ensure the SolidStep continues to provide reliable, safe, and convenient access to their trailer for many years.
