Overview

The LSI20320IE is a PCI Express SCSI Host Bus Adapter (HBA) designed to facilitate high-speed data transfer between a computer system and SCSI devices. This Quick Installation Guide provides essential information for setting up and using the device, including hardware installation, driver installation for Windows and Linux, and technical support contacts.

Function Description:

The LSI20320IE HBA serves as an interface card that allows a computer system to connect to and control SCSI (Small Computer System Interface) devices. It leverages the PCI Express bus for high-bandwidth communication, ensuring efficient data transfer rates. The adapter is designed to support Ultra320 SCSI, which is a high-performance SCSI standard. By installing this HBA, users can integrate various SCSI peripherals, such as hard drives, tape drives, and optical drives, into their systems, benefiting from SCSI's robust data handling capabilities and multi-device support. The adapter is part of LSI's Fusion-MPT™ (Message Passing Technology) family, which provides a common architecture for various I/O solutions, simplifying management and driver development.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Interface: PCI Express (specifically, an X8 slot is shown in the illustration, though compatibility with other PCI Express slot widths may exist, it's crucial to use the correct slot type).
  • SCSI Standard: Ultra320 SCSI. This indicates a maximum theoretical transfer rate of 320 MB/s.
  • Connectors: The HBA features internal high-density 68-pin SCSI connectors and/or external very high-density 68-pin SCSI connectors, allowing for flexible connectivity to a range of SCSI devices.
  • Form Factor: The physical dimensions and component layout of the host adapter may vary, as noted in the guide, but it is designed to fit into standard PCI Express slots.
  • Drivers: Supports various operating systems, including Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows 2003, and Linux distributions. Specific drivers (e.g., SYMMPI.SYS miniport driver for Windows 2000/XP, LSI_SCSI.SYS for Windows 2003, and mptlinux.txt for Linux) are provided.
  • Management Technology: Utilizes Fusion-MPT™ Device Management, which implies a consistent management interface and driver architecture across different LSI products.
  • Included Documentation: The accompanying LSI Device Drivers & Utilities CD contains the LSI Ultra320 SCSI Host Adapters User's Guide, Fusion-MPT™ Device Management User's Guide, and host adapter technical product briefs, providing comprehensive details on the device's operation and configuration.

Usage Features:

  • Ease of Installation: The guide outlines a straightforward three-step hardware installation process:
    1. Unpacking and inspection in a static-free environment.
    2. Powering down the computer, disconnecting power/networks, removing the chassis cover, and locating an empty PCI Express slot.
    3. Inserting the HBA into the selected PCI Express slot, ensuring it is gently but firmly seated, and securing it with the bracket screw.
  • Driver Support: Comprehensive driver support for popular operating systems, including Windows and Linux, ensures broad compatibility.
  • Windows Driver Installation: For Windows, drivers can be loaded during a new system installation by booting from the Microsoft installation CD-ROM and pressing F6 when prompted for unsupported drivers. This process involves preparing a driver diskette from the provided CD.
  • Linux Driver Installation: For Linux, LSI provides Open Source Drivers that can be implemented by adding precompiled binaries (via driver update disks or RPMs) or by updating the Fusion-MPT source in the Linux kernel. Users are directed to consult the mptlinux.txt file on the CD for detailed instructions.
  • Documentation: The bundled CD provides extensive documentation, including user guides and technical briefs, to assist with configuration and troubleshooting.
  • Connectivity: The presence of both internal and external SCSI connectors allows for flexible system configurations, supporting a variety of SCSI device setups.

Maintenance Features:

  • Backup Recommendation: The guide strongly advises users to back up their data before changing their system configuration, emphasizing data safety during hardware installations.
  • Static-Free Handling: Instructions to unpack the HBA in a static-free environment highlight the importance of protecting sensitive electronic components from electrostatic discharge, which can cause damage.
  • Damage Inspection: Users are instructed to inspect the HBA for damage upon unpacking. If damage is found or components are missing, users should contact LSI or their reseller support representative for assistance, ensuring that only functional hardware is installed.
  • Driver Updates: The guide directs users to the LSI website (http://www.lsi.com/support) for the most recent drivers, indicating ongoing support and potential performance improvements or bug fixes through updated software.
  • Technical Support: LSI offers dedicated technical support via email (support@lsi.com) and phone (toll-free for North America and a separate number for Europe), providing a direct channel for assistance with installation, configuration, or operational issues. This ensures users have access to expert help if they encounter problems.
  • Comprehensive Guides: The availability of detailed user guides (LSI Ultra320 SCSI Host Adapters User's Guide, Fusion-MPT™ Device Management User's Guide) on the accompanying CD serves as a valuable resource for self-maintenance and troubleshooting, allowing users to understand and resolve common issues independently.
