Overview

The Lutron Athena System is a comprehensive lighting control solution designed to provide a holistic light experience by integrating advanced light sources, intelligent shades, and connected applications. It is a flexible, simple, all-in-one system that evolves with frequent software updates, bug fixes, and security enhancements when connected to the internet.

Function Description:

The Athena system allows users to control and monitor lighting, as well as modify system and scene programming through a dedicated Lutron app. It is designed for both system setup and ongoing usage, with features tailored for lighting designers to realize their vision in a space. The system supports various load types, including Ketra, 0-10 V (static white, tunable white CCT/INT), T-Series, DMX, and DALI, offering intensity control for all and CCT/color palette control for specific types like Ketra.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Connectivity: The system comprises one or multiple connected processor/gateway devices that communicate via a system Ethernet lighting control network. Internet access is required for system start-up and highly recommended for ongoing usage.
  • LTE Modem: An included LTE modem module provides out-of-the-box cloud connectivity for secure and seamless start-up, software updates, and remote service/support. This modem is primarily for start-up use and not for long-term internet access. For ongoing internet connectivity, Lutron recommends connecting Athena processors to an internet connection that supports outbound requests.
  • Lutron App: Available on the Apple App Store, the app connects to the Athena system securely via cloud or local network.
  • Scene Capacity: Each area can contain up to 16 scenes plus an OFF scene.
  • Load Types Supported: Ketra, 0-10 V (static white), 0-10 V (tunable white CCT/INT), T-Series, DMX (1-channel), DALI, and Contact Closures.
  • Control Capabilities: Intensity control for all supported dimming loads, CCT control for Ketra and tunable white loads, and color palette control for Ketra.

Usage Features:

  • Lutron App Features:
    • Secure connection to the system via cloud or local network.
    • View current levels of system lighting.
    • Navigate area hierarchy to view and easily toggle all lights on/off in an area.
    • Activate scenes within areas.
    • Control lights: adjust all lights in an area together with master control, or control individual lighting zones.
  • Scene Editing:
    • Modify light levels for area scenes.
    • User experience tailored for Lighting Designer scene tuning, including a fine-tuning mode.
    • Ability to use the phone's camera to select a color.
    • Set Fade properties for dimming loads and Delay properties for non-Ketra loads.
    • Specify zones as affected/unaffected for the scene.
    • For tunable white lighting (0-10 V, T-Series, DMX, DALI), only intensity can be edited via the app.
  • Lighting Designer Experience (iOS only):
    • Streamlined workflow for lighting designers to connect to the system and adjust scenes.
    • Quickly connect via cloud or local network.
    • Easily find areas by toggling area lighting on/off.
    • Preview each scene in an area.
    • Adjust light levels live in real-time with a master control for the area.
    • Control and set lighting: intensity, color temperature (Ketra), full color (Ketra), vibrancy (Ketra), fade (for all dimming loads), and delay (for non-Ketra loads).
    • Quickly save settings to a scene with a "Save to" function.
    • Fine-Tuning mode for small incremental changes using full screen and haptic feedback.
  • Cloud Services:
    • Project Account Authorization: Athena systems are associated with a single Lutron account setup in the app. Multiple users will be able to access a single Athena system with individual myLutron accounts in a future update.
    • Software Updates: System software receives updates via the cloud for new features and improvements. On-site setup, configuration, or hardware additions may be required for certain new features. Systems without Internet access can be updated by a Lutron Field Service Engineer (FSE).
    • Simple Connectivity: Internet-connected Athena systems are accessible via the Lutron app from any device with an internet connection.
    • Service and Support: Lutron can remotely gather diagnostic information (with permission) for internet-connected systems and may resolve issues without an on-site visit.
    • Third-Party Integration: Cloud connection allows for integrations like voice control with third-party systems.
  • Programming Features (initially created in Lutron Designer software, some modifiable via app):
    • Scenes: Up to 16 scenes plus an OFF scene per area, modifiable via the Lutron app after initial creation.
    • Keypads: Wall controls and Pico wireless controls are initially created and programmed in Lutron Designer software.
    • Timeclocks: Initially created in Lutron Designer software. From the Lutron app, some event properties (time/days of event, lighting intensity, CCT/Full Color for Ketra loads) can be edited. Advanced settings like occupancy settings are not editable via the app.
    • Occupancy: Programming and select sensor settings are defined in Lutron Designer software.
    • Load Shed (Demand Response): Configured in Lutron Designer software, testable by an FSE, and activatable via Athena Automated Demand Response Kit.
    • Daylighting: Settings defined in Lutron Designer software.
    • Device Replacement: Performed in Lutron Designer software by an FSE.
    • System Expansion: Adding new devices/areas performed in Lutron Designer software by an FSE.
    • Shade Limits: Settings adjusted in Lutron Designer software.
    • Trim Adjustment: Lighting device trim settings adjusted in Lutron Designer software.
    • Emergency Lighting: Settings defined in Lutron Designer software.

Maintenance Features:

Lutron products are designed for minimal maintenance.

  • Hubs: Clean the front cover as needed.
  • Wall Controls: Clean the front surface with a soft towel moistened with a mild soap solution (non-ammonia) approximately every six months. Avoid spraying cleaning solution directly on the control.
  • Sensors: No maintenance required.
  • Load Controller Panels: Visually inspect installation periodically and keep airflow clear of obstructions.
  • Battery-Powered Devices: Replace batteries as needed with the correct type. Refer to individual product installation sheets for specifications.

General Safety Precautions:

  • Only personnel with proper electrical safety training and knowledge of Lutron controls equipment should perform maintenance.
  • Always de-energize, lockout, tagout, and verify de-energized all electrical equipment before performing work, following local site safety procedures.
  • Multiple circuits may feed Lutron equipment; locate and lock each supply breaker in the OFF position. Test for voltage before beginning maintenance work.
  • Stop work immediately, secure the site, and seek help if unexpected issues occur during maintenance.
  • Use only Lutron-approved replacement parts.
